Ruben Gallego's (D-Ariz.) first-quarter performance, Axios' Stephen Neukam reports. Lake's campaign now has $2.5 million cash on hand and trailed only Pennsylvania Republican Dave McCormick as the top-raising GOP challenger nationwide. Gallego raised $7.5 million to start the year, with $9.6 million cash on hand. Scoop 2: The Teamsters union's political action committee is making another move toward the GOP, contributing $5,000 to Sen. Josh Hawley's re-election campaign in Missouri, Axios' Hans Nichols has learned. The PAC gave $1.28 million to Democratic candidates and $30,000 to Republicans in 2022, but Hawley has made a point to align himself with the labor movement, joining picket lines with the Teamsters and the United Auto Workers. Why it matters: Democrats have a hard map this year, and every dollar will count for vulnerable incumbents like Jon Tester of Montana, Jacky Rosen of Nevada and Sherrod Brown of Ohio. Between the lines: Some Republican challengers, like Bernie Moreno in Ohio, faced a contentious primary process that spread donor money across a number of candidates. Maryland Republican Larry Hogan raised $3.1 million, but it is unclear who will win the Democratic primary. David Trone has spent an eye-popping $40 million-plus of his own money running in Maryland — and may not even be the Democratic nominee. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), in the fight for his political life, is leaning on bucking his own party and President Biden to keep his Senate seat. Why it matters: Tester's campaign in deep-red Montana could be the difference between Democrats keeping control of the Senate or relinquishing it to the GOP, Axios' Stephen Neukam reports. Some of the earliest ads from the Tester camp have elevated his splits with Biden, including an ad that said the Democrat "fought to stop President Biden from letting migrants stay in America instead of remain in Mexico." Zoom in: Biden is very unpopular in Montana, so keeping the president at arm's length could be pivotal to Tester's re-election bid. That's a far cry from 2018, when Tester's first ad promoted the bills Tester worked on that were signed into law by Trump — and took out full-page ads to thank the president during a Trump visit. But Tester has not embraced Trump so far this year, and Tester notably voted to convict Trump in both of his impeachments. Zoom out: Tester, along with Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), are two of the only Democrats running for Senate this year who have been so openly critical of the White House on the campaign trail. Both men are facing re-election fights in states that Trump won in 2016 and 2020. Why it matters: Sen. Mitch McConnell has long been a formidable fundraiser as Senate GOP leader. Proving they can rake in the cash is critical for both Johns vying to replace McConnell. By the numbers: Cornyn pulled in $5.6 million in just the first three months of the year for Republican candidates, a source tells Axios. He uniquely helps fellow Republicans raise money directly to their campaigns.
