Members phkrause Posted July 24, 2023 Members Posted July 24, 2023 (JTA) — Next Thursday is Tisha B’Av, the day on which Jews traditionally commemorate the destruction of the two ancient Temples with fasting and other modes of self-denial. The goal of these rituals is to induce a mindset of mourning in an attempt to appreciate what was lost with the destruction of the Temple. https://www.jta.org/2023/07/20/ideas/tisha-bav-invites-you-to-imagine-how-everything-could-go-wrong? Members phkrause Posted July 27, 2023 Author Members Posted July 27, 2023 Tisha B’Av is a day of mourning for the Jewish people. It occurs on the ninth day of the month of Av on the Jewish calendar, and that’s what Tisha B’Av means — the “ninth of Av.” It is the date when the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed, hundreds of years apart. Many other catastrophic events have happened on this same date throughout Jewish history, most of them stemming from anti-Semitism and often resulting in violent persecution of the Jewish people. As a historical day of loss and tragedy, Jewish people commemorate it with fasting and several Jewish mourning traditions. We sit on low chairs for part of the day as a symbol of our sorrow and low spirits over the losses incurred on Tisha B’Av. Tisha B’Av provides us with another opportunity to pray for Jewish people everywhere to find the joy of knowing Yeshua (Jesus) and believing He is the Messiah spoken of by Moses and the prophets. Tisha B’Av begins at sunset tonight and ends at sunset tomorrow. We invite you to reflect on this sorrowful day and join us in praying for Jewish people mourning throughout the world.
