Members phkrause Posted November 23, 2024 Author Members Posted November 23, 2024 Netanyahu joins a small group of leaders accused of crimes against humanity by the ICC. Here's what that means The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netenyahu, his former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and Mohammed Deif, a top Hamas official that Israel claims to have killed. Read more. Key points: The ICC becomes involved when nations are unable or unwilling to prosecute crimes on their territory. Israel argues that it has a functioning court system, and disputes over a nation’s ability or willingness to prosecute have fueled past disputes between the court and individual countries. While the warrants could complicate travel abroad for Netanyahu and Gallant, they are unlikely to face judges in The Hague anytime soon. Member countries are required to detain suspects facing a warrant if they set foot on their soil, but the court has no way to enforce that. Last year, the court issued a warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges that he was responsible for the abductions of children from Ukraine. Former Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi was captured and killed by rebels shortly after the ICC issued a warrant for his arrest on charges linked to the brutal suppression of anti-government protests in 2011. One of Africa’s most notorious warlords, Joseph Kony, was issued an arrest warrant from the ICC in 2005 and Sudan’s former President Omar al-Bashir is wanted by the ICC over accusations related to the conflict in Darfur. RELATED COVERAGE ➤ Hungary’s Orbán vows to disregard international arrest warrant for Netanyahu Many in Gaza are eating just once a day, as hunger spreads amid aid issues Philippines says it will cooperate if ICC seeks Duterte’s custody over drug killings Middle East The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of war crimes over the war in Gaza. The court said it had "reasonable grounds" to believe Netanyahu bears criminal responsibility for crimes including "starvation as a method of warfare" and "the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts." Netanyahu's office said Israel "utterly rejects the absurd and false actions and accusations." Israel's former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and a senior Hamas commander were also indicted. The ICC announcement came as the Palestinian death toll from Israel's war in Gaza rose to more than 44,000, according to the health ministry there. Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13

Members phkrause Posted May 18 Author Members Posted May 18 Trump’s sanctions on ICC prosecutor have halted the tribunal’s work Nearly three months ago, U.S. President Donald Trump slapped sanctions on the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan. Since then, the British barrister has lost access to his email, and his bank accounts have been frozen. American staffers at The Hague-based court have been told that if they travel to the U.S. they risk arrest and non-governmental organizations have stopped working with the ICC. “Work has ground to a halt," one official said. Read more. Why this matters: Trump sanctioned the court after a panel of ICC judges in November issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant. Judges found there was reason to believe that the pair may have committed war crimes by restricting humanitarian aid and intentionally targeting civilians in Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza — charges Israeli officials deny. Meanwhile, the court is facing an increasing lack of cooperation from countries normally considered to be its staunchest supporters. The ICC has no enforcement apparatus of its own and relies on member states. In the past year, three countries – including two in the European Union – have refused to execute warrants issued by the court. Members phkrause Posted June 8 Author Members Posted June 8 International Criminal Court Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled new sanctions on Thursday that targeted four judges on the International Criminal Court for attempting to investigate the US and Israel for alleged war crimes. President Trump authorized the sanctions and possible entrance bans in an executive order he signed in February. That order had already been used to sanction ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan. In response, the ICC said the sanctions were “a clear attempt to undermine the independence of an international judicial institution which operates under the mandate from 125 States Parties from all corners of the globe.” Last November, the ICC issued arrest warrants for top Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and for top Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, who was later killed. Members phkrause Posted June 15 Author Members Posted June 15 UN nuclear watchdog board censures Iran, which retaliates by announcing a new enrichment site The U.N. nuclear watchdog’s board of governors on Thursday formally found that Iran isn’t complying with its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years, a move that could lead to further tensions and set in motion an effort to restore United Nations sanctions on Tehran later this year. Read more. Why this matters: Iran reacted immediately, saying it will establish a new enrichment facility “in a secure location” and that “other measures are also being planned.” U.S. President Donald Trump previously warned that Israel or America could carry out airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations failed. The escalation over Iran’s nuclear program comes ahead of a new round of Iran-U.S. talks Sunday in Oman. Members phkrause Posted June 15 Author Members Posted June 15 UN refugee agency says more than 122 million people forcibly displaced worldwide The findings come as the U.N. refugee agency released its Global Trends Report on Thursday, which said the number of people driven abroad or displaced in their home countries by war, violence, and persecution as of April rose to 122.1 million, up from 120 million last year. Read more. Why this matters: The agency says the number of people forcibly displaced by violence and persecution around the world has nearly doubled over the last decade. Among those, the number of internally displaced people jumped by more than 9% to 73.5 million at the end of last year. The numbers represent cumulative figures from years of conflict, violence, and persecution, and some displaced people returned home last year, even as others fled. The report comes at a time when humanitarian groups are facing budget cuts from the United States and other traditional Western donors.
