Members phkrause
Hostage rescue Four hostages were rescued Saturday in an Israeli operation that took weeks of planning — but killed scores of Palestinians in Gaza and left behind a trail of devastation. The latest figures from Gazan authorities say 274 Palestinians were killed and nearly 700 injured, which would mark one of the deadliest days in months for people living in the enclave. Israeli officials have disputed those numbers, saying they estimated the number of casualties from the operation was "under 100." More than 70 hostages held in Gaza since Hamas' deadly surprise attack on October 7 are believed to be alive. Intensive negotiations over a ceasefire and a deal to swap hostages for Palestinian prisoners have stalled recently following months of talks. Members phkrause
Gaza ceasefire The UN Security Council adopted a resolution proposed by the US for a permanent ceasefire and release of the hostages in Gaza. The motion received 14 votes in favor and one abstention by Russia — the first time the council has endorsed such a plan to end the war. Hamas said it welcomed the resolution and is ready to engage with mediators in negotiations to implement the measures. Israel vowed to persist with its military operation in Gaza, saying it won't engage in "meaningless" negotiations with Hamas. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the urgency of reaching an agreement, adding that the US and other world leaders would stand behind the ceasefire proposal. US says it’s ‘evaluating’ the reply BEIRUT (AP) — Hamas said Tuesday that it gave mediators its reply to the U.S.-backed proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza, seeking some “amendments” on the deal. It appeared the reply was short of an outright acceptance that the United States has been pushing for but kept negotiations alive over an elusive halt to the eight-month war. https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-06-11-2024-d3733d55c6a66222da1a4a051997094c? Members phkrause
Hamas hostages The fate of the 120 remaining hostages in Gaza is crucial to any deal to end the months-long conflict between Israel and Hamas. But a senior Hamas official has told CNN that "no one has an idea" how many of them are alive, and that any deal to release them must include guarantees of a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Benny Gantz, who quit Israel's war cabinet last week, said that Israel knows how many hostages in Gaza are still alive, adding that the public will receive details on some of the hostages "in due time." Meanwhile, negotiations over the US-backed proposal to free the hostages and end the fighting have intensified in recent days but appeared to grind to a halt on Wednesday after Hamas presented its response to the document. Members phkrause
The war in Gaza is wiping out entire Palestinian families, one branch at a time To a degree never seen before, Israel is killing entire Palestinian families. An Associated Press investigation identified at least 60 Palestinian families where at least 25 people were killed — sometimes four generations from the same bloodline — in bombings between October and December, the deadliest and most destructive period of the war. Read more. Why this matters: Getting detailed images and documentation is difficult even for Palestinians. Several families have almost no one left to document the toll and thousands cannot account for all their dead because so many bodies remain under rubble. Power is limited to hospitals and Israel cuts communication networks frequently. Israel has refused to comment on specific strikes. In general, Israel has said it targets Hamas and accuses the militant group of endangering civilians by operating among the population and in tunnels below them. Nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million population has been displaced, dividing families and severing contacts between parts of the small territory. And the killing of families across generations is a key part of the genocide case against Israel now before the International Court of Justice. Members phkrause
Israel's top military spokesman has said Hamas cannot be destroyed, casting doubt about whether the government's war aim of defeating the militant group can be achieved. The comments drew a sharp rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and showed the deepening rift between the Israeli government and its military. Netanyahu has come under increasing pressure from members of his government and Israel's allies, including the US, to devise a strategy for the post-war governance of Gaza after Israel's devastating bombardment in the region. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 35,000 since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, according to the health ministry in the besieged enclave. Members phkrause
Israel’s Supreme Court says the ultra-Orthodox must serve in the military The court ruled unanimously Tuesday that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men for military service, a decision that could lead to the collapse of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition as Israel wages its war in Gaza. Read more. Why this matters: Under longstanding arrangements, ultra-Orthodox men have been exempt from the draft, which is compulsory for most Jewish men and women. These exemptions have long been a source of anger among the secular public, a divide that has widened during the 8-month-old war. If the politically powerful ultra-Orthodox parties leave Netanyahu’s governing coalition over the ruling, the government will collapse and the country will be forced into new elections, with Netanyahu trailing significantly in the polls. Members phkrause
As the war in Gaza nears 10 months, Israel issued new evacuation orders today in the enclave, including for eastern Khan Younis and Rafah. The latest orders have forced residents — many of whom were already displaced — to seek shelter elsewhere in what signals the possibility of another ground operation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said the country's military is nearing the "end of the stage of eliminating" Hamas' army in Gaza. He again vowed that Israel would achieve its goals, including returning the hostages that were abducted by Hamas militants on October 7. Israeli attacks in Gaza have since killed more than 37,700 Palestinians and injured over 86,000 people, according to Gaza health officials. Members phkrause
Gaza The Israeli military has expanded its evacuation order to the whole of Gaza City after sending tens of thousands of Palestinians fleeing from several of the city's neighborhoods earlier this week. Israel's latest directive threatens to intensify the plight of already displaced communities after more than 250,000 residents were urged to head to "safe zones" further south since Sunday, a UN office said. Meanwhile, the Biden administration is allowing a shipment of 500-pound bombs to be sent to Israel after it was paused more than two months ago. The initial decision to halt a shipment of both 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs was due to US concerns about Israel using the heavy munitions — specifically the larger 2,000-pound bombs — in their Rafah operation.
