Israel orders evacuation of part of Gaza humanitarian zone as war’s toll passes 39,000 Palestinians

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Israeli military ordered the evacuation Monday of part of a crowded area in the Gaza Strip it had designated a humanitarian zone, saying it is planning an operation against Hamas militants there. The order triggered a new flight of Palestinians, many of whom had taken refuge there just in the past weeks.

U.S. concerned Hamas leader's assassination could derail Gaza hostage-ceasefire talks

The Biden administration is "very concerned" the assassination of Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniyeh could derail negotiations over the Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal and increase the risk of a regional war, three U.S. officials said.

Breaking: Israel says top Hamas commander killed

Israel's military said this morning it has intelligence confirming its July 13 airstrike killed Hamas' top military commander, Mohammed Deif.

Why it matters: Israeli officials say Deif was one of the primary masterminds of the Oct. 7 attacks that killed some 1,200 people. If confirmed, his death would mean Israel killed Hamas' top military commander and top political leader in just over two weeks.

  • Hamas has yet to comment on the Israeli claim. The group initially denied Deif had been killed in the strike in Khan Younis in Southern Gaza. Gaza health authorities said the strike killed 90 people.

Meanwhile, large crowds gathered today in Tehran for a funeral procession for Hamas' political chief, Ismail Haniyeh.

  • Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who has vowed revenge for Haniyeh's assassination on Iranian soil on Wednesday, led prayers.

Israel Accuses Hamas of Using “Human Shields” While IDF Embeds Among Civilians at Lebanon Border

ARAB AL-ARAMSHE, ISRAEL — Inside the shrapnel-pocked school building, children’s drawings are strewn about and traces of blood dot the floor. The playground outside is littered with debris, and a burned-out car sits in the parking lot. Children ride their bicycles through the streets while families in this Israeli village less than 1 kilometer from the border with Lebanon sip coffee on their porches, seemingly unperturbed by the risk of all-out war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Hamas names Yahya Sinwar, mastermind of the Oct. 7 attacks, as its new leader in show of defiance

BEIRUT (AP) — Hamas on Tuesday named Yahya Sinwar, its top official in Gaza who masterminded the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, as its new leader in a dramatic sign of the power of the Palestinian militant group’s hardline wing after his predecessor was killed in a presumed Israeli strike in Iran.

Hostage deal

Mediators from the US, Qatar and Egypt said on Thursday they may present what they called a "final bridging proposal" next week, urging Israel and Hamas to agree on a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza. The three countries have been leading efforts to strike a deal, but conversations stalled after the death of a Hamas political leader in a blast in Iran last week. There are currently 115 total hostages, living and dead, being held in Gaza, according to Israeli officials. Of that number, 111 hostages were taken during the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel, which killed over 1,200 people. Israel's ensuing military offensive in the enclave has killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians and displaced nearly 2 million, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health and the United Nations.

"Now or never" on hostage deal

A parade of top Biden administration officials is heading to the Middle East for a dramatic week of high-stakes diplomacy to try to prevent war in the region and secure a hostage and ceasefire deal in Gaza, Axios' Barak Ravid reports.

  • Why it matters: The results of the coming week will indicate whether the region is going to sink even deeper into crisis and a widening perpetual war, — or if, for the first time since Oct. 7, there'll be a significant change of course. The outcome could shape President Biden's legacy.

U.S., Egyptian and Qatari mediators and officials are spending the next few days trying to close the gaps between Israel and Hamas ahead of a final round of negotiations between the parties, set for Aug. 15.

  • Israeli officials said the talks on Thursday are "a now-or-never" moment for a deal to release hostages being held by Hamas, in exchange for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza.

The U.S. and allies are pressing Iran and Hezbollah not to retaliate against Israel for the assassinations of Hamas' political leader in Tehran and a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut.

  • The U.S. and Israel don't have a clear idea about when such an attack could happen. But the general assessment is that Hezbollah is likely to attack first, possibly this weekend, U.S. and Israeli officials said.

Behind the scenes: White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan held a Zoom meeting yesterday with families of eight U.S. hostages in Gaza, and briefed them on the decisive round of negotiations that will take place on Thursday in Cairo or Doha.

A top Hamas official says the group is losing faith in the US as a mediator in Gaza cease-fire talks

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — A top Hamas official said the Palestinian militant group is losing faith in the United States’ ability to mediate a cease-fire in Gaza ahead of a new round of talks scheduled for this week amid mounting pressure to bring an end to the 10-month-old war with Israel.

🇮🇱 Scoop: Trump, Bibi speak about Gaza

Former President Trump spoke on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday and discussed the Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal, two U.S. sources briefed on the call tell Axios' Barak Ravid.

  • Why it matters: A crucial round of negotiations with senior U.S., Qatari, Egyptian and Israeli officials is set to take place in Doha today to try to close the remaining gaps between Israel and Hamas.

Israeli officials have said the summit is "the last chance" to get a deal amid threats by Iran and Hezbollah to attack Israel in retaliation for the recent assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in Tehran and Beirut.

  • One source said Trump's call was intended to encourage Netanyahu to take the deal, but stressed he didn't know if this is indeed what the former president told Netanyahu.
  • The Israeli Prime Minister's Office didn't deny that the call took place. The Trump campaign declined to comment.

US official says Mideast mediators are preparing for implementation of cease-fire deal in advance

🇮🇱 Hamas rejects U.S. proposal

Hamas rejected an updated U.S. proposal for a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza yesterday, blaming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for moving the goalposts and the U.S. for indulging him, Axios' Barak Ravid writes.

  • Why it matters: The White House had claimed significant progress had been made during talks in Doha over the last several days. The rejection of the new proposal makes President Biden's goal of getting a deal this week almost impossible.

A stalemate in the negotiations would also make an attack by Iran and Hezbollah against Israel much more likely.

  • Both Tehran and Hezbollah have vowed revenge for Israeli assassinations in Beirut and Tehran, but have held their fire so far.

Israeli hostages

The bodies of six Israeli hostages have been retrieved from Gaza during an overnight military operation in Khan Younis. "Our forces returned the bodies of six of our hostages who were held by the murderous terrorist organization Hamas," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement today, thanking those involved in the operation for their "bravery and determined action." There are currently 109 Israeli hostages being held in Gaza, including 36 believed to be dead, according to data from the Israeli Government Press Office. The news comes as negotiations for a ceasefire continue, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying that Netanyahu agreed on Monday to a US "bridging proposal" for a deal after the pair met in Tel Aviv. Blinken said the next step in the ceasefire talks "is for Hamas to say yes."

Israel-Hamas war cease-fire and hostage talks will continue after weekend meetings didn’t resolve gaps

JERUSALEM (AP) — A round of high-level talks in Cairo meant to bring about a cease-fire and hostage deal to at least temporarily end the 10-month Israel-Hamas war in Gaza ended Sunday without a final agreement, a U.S. official said. But talks will continue at lower levels in the coming days in an effort to bridge remaining gaps.

Hostage rescue

Israel's military said Tuesday it had rescued a 52-year-old hostage held by Hamas since October 7 in a "complex operation" in southern Gaza. Farhan Al-Qadi, a Bedouin Israeli citizen from Rahat is "in a stable medical condition," an Israeli military spokesman told CNN. He is the first Israeli hostage to have been reclaimed alive from inside Hamas' sprawling tunnel network underneath Gaza. Al-Qadi's family hailed his rescue as "unbelievable," adding that they had not expected him to come back alive. There are now 104 hostages being held from the October 7 attack, according to the Israeli prime minister's office and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. Of those, dozens are presumed dead. This comes as negotiators are still working on a ceasefire-for-hostages deal, and have met with increasing intensity in recent weeks.

Israel Defense Forces said they recovered the bodies of six hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, including a U.S. citizen — Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, whose parents appealed for the hostages' release during the Democratic National Convention.

  • After the operation, 101 hostages remain in Gaza, Axios' Barak Ravid reports.

Five of the hostages were kidnapped by Hamas from the Nova music festival in southern Israel on Oct. 7. The sixth, Carmel Gat, was taken from the community of Be'eri.

  • IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the hostages were murdered by Hamas guards "shortly before IDF forces reached them."
  • President Biden said the bodies of the hostages were recovered from a tunnel under the city of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Hersh Goldberg-Polin became the symbol of the American hostages held by Hamas.

  • Goldberg-Polin was last seen in a video released by Hamas in April.
  • When his parents spoke at the DNC, thousands in the audience chanted: "Bring them back!"

Biden said in a statement last night that Goldberg-Polin's parents "have been relentless and irrepressible champions of their son and of all the hostages held in unconscionable conditions."

  • "Make no mistake, Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes," Biden continued. "And we will keep working around the clock for a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages."
  • Vice President Harris said: "The threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel — and American citizens in Israel — must be eliminated and Hamas cannot control Gaza. The Palestinian people too have suffered under Hamas' rule for nearly two decades."

Keep reading ... Biden statement. ... Harris statement.
