Hamas blamed an Israeli airstrike for the death of the head of the Palestinian militant group’s political bureau. Read more. Key points: Israel vowed to kill Haniyeh and other leaders of Hamas over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel. An Israeli military spokesman declined to comment on the situation. Israel often doesn’t comment on assassinations carried out by its Mossad intelligence agency. The killing of Haniyeh comes after Israel carried out a rare strike on Beirut, which it said killed Fouad Shukur, a top Hezbollah military commander. Hezbollah has not confirmed Shukur’s death in the strike, which also killed at least one woman and two children and wounded dozens of people. The dramatic assassination threatened to reverberate throughout the region’s intertwined conflicts. Photo: Abed Rahim Khatib/Anadolu via Getty Israel's military said this morning it has intelligence confirming its July 13 airstrike killed Hamas' top military commander, Mohammed Deif. Why it matters: Israeli officials say Deif was one of the primary masterminds of the Oct. 7 attacks that killed some 1,200 people. If confirmed, his death would mean Israel killed Hamas' top military commander and top political leader in just over two weeks. Hamas has yet to comment on the Israeli claim. The group initially denied Deif had been killed in the strike in Khan Younis in Southern Gaza. Gaza health authorities said the strike killed 90 people. Haniyeh's funeral procession in Tehran. Members phkrause Posted August 11, 2024 Author Members Posted August 11, 2024 Hostage deal Mediators from the US, Qatar and Egypt said on Thursday they may present what they called a "final bridging proposal" next week, urging Israel and Hamas to agree on a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza. The three countries have been leading efforts to strike a deal, but conversations stalled after the death of a Hamas political leader in a blast in Iran last week. There are currently 115 total hostages, living and dead, being held in Gaza, according to Israeli officials. Of that number, 111 hostages were taken during the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel, which killed over 1,200 people. Israel's ensuing military offensive in the enclave has killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians and displaced nearly 2 million, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health and the United Nations. Photo: Mark Ricardo Moraes/Reuters A parade of top Biden administration officials is heading to the Middle East for a dramatic week of high-stakes diplomacy to try to prevent war in the region and secure a hostage and ceasefire deal in Gaza, Axios' Barak Ravid reports. Why it matters: The results of the coming week will indicate whether the region is going to sink even deeper into crisis and a widening perpetual war, — or if, for the first time since Oct. 7, there'll be a significant change of course. The outcome could shape President Biden's legacy. U.S., Egyptian and Qatari mediators and officials are spending the next few days trying to close the gaps between Israel and Hamas ahead of a final round of negotiations between the parties, set for Aug. 15. Israeli officials said the talks on Thursday are "a now-or-never" moment for a deal to release hostages being held by Hamas, in exchange for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza. The U.S. and allies are pressing Iran and Hezbollah not to retaliate against Israel for the assassinations of Hamas' political leader in Tehran and a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut. The U.S. and Israel don't have a clear idea about when such an attack could happen. But the general assessment is that Hezbollah is likely to attack first, possibly this weekend, U.S. and Israeli officials said. Behind the scenes: White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan held a Zoom meeting yesterday with families of eight U.S. hostages in Gaza, and briefed them on the decisive round of negotiations that will take place on Thursday in Cairo or Doha. Why it matters: A crucial round of negotiations with senior U.S., Qatari, Egyptian and Israeli officials is set to take place in Doha today to try to close the remaining gaps between Israel and Hamas. Israeli officials have said the summit is "the last chance" to get a deal amid threats by Iran and Hezbollah to attack Israel in retaliation for the recent assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in Tehran and Beirut. Members phkrause Posted August 19, 2024 Author Members Posted August 19, 2024 🇮🇱 Hamas rejects U.S. proposal Hamas rejected an updated U.S. proposal for a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza yesterday, blaming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for moving the goalposts and the U.S. for indulging him, Axios' Barak Ravid writes. Why it matters: The White House had claimed significant progress had been made during talks in Doha over the last several days. The rejection of the new proposal makes President Biden's goal of getting a deal this week almost impossible. A stalemate in the negotiations would also make an attack by Iran and Hezbollah against Israel much more likely. Members phkrause Posted August 19, 2024 Author Members Posted August 19, 2024 High-stakes negotiations are underway for a cease-fire in Gaza U.S. and Arab mediators say they are closing in on a deal to halt the war in Gaza and free hostages captured by Hamas in its Oct. 7 attack, with U.S. officials expressing cautious optimism after two days of talks. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is on his ninth trip to the Middle East since the start of the war to press for the quick conclusion of an elusive cease-fire agreement. Read more. Key points: Any deal would have to be accepted by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Yahya Sinwar, who helped mastermind the Oct. 7 attack and became Hamas’ overall leader after Ismail Haniyeh was killed. Far-right leaders in Netanyahu's coalition have threatened to bring down the government if he concedes too much, forcing early elections that could drive him from power. Sinwar, meanwhile, is hiding in Gaza, likely deep inside Hamas’ vast network of tunnels, and has stuck to a hard line throughout the talks. Overall, Hamas wants assurances that Israel will not resume the war after the first batch of hostages — around 30 of the most vulnerable — are released. Netanyahu faces intense pressure from families of the hostages and much of the Israeli public to make a deal to bring them home. Israel wants to ensure negotiations do not drag on indefinitely over the second phase, in which the remaining living hostages, including male soldiers, are to be freed. Key points: The mass outpouring appeared to be the largest such demonstration in 11 months of war and protesters said it felt like a possible turning point. Three of the six hostages found dead — including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin — were reportedly scheduled to be released in the first phase of a cease-fire proposal discussed in July, fueling fury and frustration among the protesters. Israel’s largest trade union, the Histadrut, further pressured the government by calling a general strike for Monday, the first since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. It aims to shut down or disrupt major sectors of the economy, including banking, health care and the country’s main airport. The army, noting the difficulty of rescue operations, has acknowledged that a deal is the only way to bring home large numbers of hostages safely. Top security officials say the intense pressure on Hamas has created favorable conditions for a cease-fire deal.
