South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol today imposed martial law in the country — only to lift it less than six hours later, after the National Assembly passed a resolution condemning his move.

  • Why it matters: The stunning decree sparked protests and a constitutional crisis in one of the U.S.' closest allies.

🪖 Driving the news: Yoon, who is highly unpopular in South Korea, said in a surprise broadcast that martial law was necessary to defend South Korea from "pro-North Korean" elements and to safeguard the constitutional order.

  • He cited steps by the center-left Democratic Party to take over the budget process and to impeach members of his government.
  • The U.S. was not notified ahead of time, a national security spokesperson said.
  • Demonstrators clashed with police outside the parliament building. The National Assembly, which is controlled by the Democratic Party, quickly voted to end martial law. The leader of Yoon's party also condemned his actions.

Go deeper.

South Korea

South Korea has been plunged into political chaos in the hours since the country’s embattled president declared martial law but was forced to lift the decree amid widespread condemnation. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in an unannounced late-night TV address on Tuesday, accusing the country’s main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and anti-state activities. But soon after, lawmakers forced their way past soldiers into parliament and voted to block the decree. Since then, six opposition parties have submitted a bill calling for Yoon’s impeachment. The main opposition Democratic Party, meanwhile, said it plans to file treason charges against the president, as well as the defense and interior ministers.

What’s next: South Korean leader’s martial law declaration threatens his political career

South Korea

The leader of South Korea's ruling party said today that President Yoon Suk Yeoul needs to be immediately suspended from duty to protect the country from "grave danger." The reversal by Han Dong-hoon, chief of Yoon's own People Power Party, comes after he received "credible evidence" that Yoon had ordered the arrest of key politicians during the short-lived martial law decree imposed on Tuesday night. Yoon's order was met with shock and anger across the country, with protesters and opposition figures demanding his impeachment. Han's comments today are the latest sign that support for Yoon is wavering within his own party, which has criticized his declaration of martial law but has not expressed outright support for impeachment.

🇰🇷 South Korea crash kills 179

South Korea's deadliest air accident ever killed 179 of 181 people onboard, with two crew members surviving.

How it happened: The 15-year-old, twin-engine Boeing 737-800 was seen skidding down the runway with no visible landing gear before crashing into navigation equipment and a wall in an explosion of flames and debris, Reuters reports.

  • The flight, operated by low-cost carrier Jeju Air, was arriving at Muan International Airport from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, with 175 passengers and six crew on board.
  • The two surviving crew members, a man and a woman, were rescued from the tail section of the burning plane and were being treated at hospitals with medium to severe injuries.

"Only the tail part retains a little bit of shape, and the rest of [the plane] looks almost impossible to recognize," Muan fire chief Lee Jung-hyun said at a press briefing.

  • Investigators are examining bird strikes and weather conditions as possible factors. Yonhap news agency cited airport authorities as saying a bird strike may have caused the landing gear to malfunction.

Context: Today's tragedy was one of the world's worst landing accidents since a crash in São Paulo in 2007 — 17 years ago — killed all 187 people on board and 12 others on the ground. In 2010, 158 people died when an aircraft overshot a runway in Mangalore, India.

South Korea to inspect Boeing aircraft as it struggles to find cause of plane crash that killed 179

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean officials said Monday they will conduct safety inspections of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by the country’s airlines, as they struggle to determine what caused a plane crash that killed 179 people a day earlier.

South Korea plane crash

A total of 179 people were killed Sunday in a plane crash in South Korea, according to local officials, in what is the country's worst air disaster in decades. Investigators are working to pinpoint what may have caused the crash of Jeju Air flight 7C 2216, which was flying from Bangkok. South Korean officials confirmed today that the pilot had reported a bird strike before he made the doomed emergency landing in Muan, South Korea. Experts also told CNN that the plane's undercarriage — specifically, the wheels used for takeoff and landing — appeared not to have fully deployed before landing. Just two of the 181 people on board the flight survived, both crew members.

South Korea standoff

South Korean investigators suspended efforts to detain embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol after a dramatic standoff in Seoul today. Lawmakers voted to impeach Yoon last month following his short-lived martial law declaration. Yoon is now wanted for questioning in multiple investigations, including accusations of leading an insurrection — a crime punishable by life imprisonment or even the death penalty. Some 80 police and investigators had entered the presidential compound today to take Yoon into custody for questioning but were blocked by a "human wall" of around 200 soldiers and members of the presidential security detail.
