Image: GraphicaArtis via Getty Images "A Visit from St. Nicholas" — a.k.a. "The Night Before Christmas" — was published anonymously in the Troy (N.Y.) Sentinel, on Dec. 23, 1823. The author remained unknown as the tale soared in popularity. Years later, it was finally credited to wealthy Manhattan biblical scholar Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863).
