Members phkrause
Caitlin Clark vs. basketball pay gap Data: Spotrac. (Based on average annual value of player's contract in 2023-24 season.) Chart: Simran Parwani/Axios Caitlin Clark's entire WNBA team combined will get paid about the same as one random back-bench NBA player next year, Axios' Sam Baker writes. The Indiana Fever's total payroll was roughly $1.2 million this past year, which is about average for the league. The NBA's minimum contract for a player with just one year of experience is $1.5 million per year. 🏀 The big picture: Clark's legions of fans have been shocked to learn how little the WNBA's top talent gets paid. But she might be powerful enough to help change that reality. Ticket prices for Indiana Fever games are up almost 200%, per The Athletic. Other teams' ticket prices are highest, by far, for games against the Fever. Clark is already an astounding driver of TV ratings, merchandising and high-profile sponsorships. 📺 What's next: The WNBA is in the process of negotiating a new media deal, just as droves of new fans will be tuning in. The league will need to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement with players by 2027 — players' chance to grab a bigger slice of the league's growing pie. Go deeper. Sterling called 5,420 regular-season games plus 211 postseason games, AP reports. Fans pined to hear him follow final outs with: "Theeeeee Yankees win!" In his booming baritone, Sterling explained the origin of his signature, exclamatory home run calls: "I just happened to do something for Bernie Williams. He hit a home run and I said, 'Bern, baby, Bern!'" "I did say `A-bomb from A-Rod!' when he hit a home run and I did say: `Robbie Canó, don't you know,'" Sterling recalled of his calls for Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Canó. Members phkrause
🏈 Cowboys draft new blood The Dallas Cowboys made some decisions this weekend. Photo: John Smolek/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Dallas Cowboys picked some new players this weekend, but it remains unclear whether they'll keep some of the stars they already have. Why it matters: Cowboys fans have been waiting almost 30 years for the team to win another Super Bowl. State of play: This is the last year of quarterback Dak Prescott's contract, and there's a chance the team won't extend it before the season starts. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb — who led the NFL in catches — also hasn't had his contract extended and hasn't shown up yet to offseason workouts. The latest: The Cowboys drafted eight players after starting the weekend with seven picks. They exchanged their 24th pick in the first round with the Detroit Lions for their 29th pick and an extra third-round pick. Who's who: The University of Oklahoma's Tyler Guyton was picked 29th in the first round. The former TCU player will play left tackle. Marshawn Kneeland — defensive end from Western Michigan — was picked in the second round. Cooper Beebe — guard from Kansas State — was picked in the third. Marist Liufau — linebacker from Notre Dame — was also picked in the third. Caelen Carson — cornerback from Wake Forest — was picked in the fifth. Ryan Flournoy — wide receiver from Southeast Missouri State — was picked in the sixth. Nathan Thomas — offensive lineman from Louisiana-Lafayette — was picked in the seventh. Justin Rogers — defensive tackle from Auburn — was also picked in the seventh. The bottom line: The Super Bowl is always in sight. Until it's not.
