Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted February 8 Moderators Share Posted February 8 Blindness in the elderly is often, not always, caused by Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), which occurs in two types. In Wet ARMD the death of the visual cells is caused by blood leakage inside the eyeball. It is commonly treated by regular injections into the eyeball that may last for years. Currently there are four medications that may be injected. In Dry ARMD , the more common form of ARMD, the cause for the death of the visual cells is not fully understood. Prior to 2023 there was no good treatment of Dry ARMD. In 2023, two new injections to treat Dry ARMD were approved. They are Syfovre and Izervay. Neither cures the disease. Both limit the progression of the disease. IOW, both injections delay the occurrence of blindness. NOTE: Further information of these treatments is available on the Internet. In addition, both conditions may exist, the Dry may be in one eye with the Wet in the other eye. phkrause 1 Quote Gregory
