Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted February 19 Moderators Share Posted February 19 Mickey Barreto lived for five years in a New York City hotel without paying any rent. The following article explains how this was done, and why he now faces criminal charges. https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2024-02-19/a-loophole-got-him-a-free-new-york-hotel-stay-for-five-years-then-he-claimed-to-own-the-building The reality is that people who live in rented property often have major rights. I am acquainted with a recent California case in which a care-giver lived in a home of a 100% disabled male, who was provided care by the man who lived in the home. Upon death of the patient, the care-giver attempted to be awarded the deed to the property, and also to permanently live in the home. The rightful heirs to the property probably spent tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees and money spent to repair major property damage in order to obtain a deed to the property and to evict the previous care-giver. It took more than a year, during which the care-giver represented himself in Court. NOTE: California law prohibits a care-giver from inheriting a home under the circumstances listed above. The care-giver had no legal training. phkrause 1 Quote Gregory
