Why it matters: At 30,000+ feet, you don't need to worry about clouds obscuring the effect. Delta is offering a "path-of-totality flight" that's "timed to give those on board the best chance of safely viewing the solar eclipse at its peak." Basic seats for the one-way fare from SLC to Austin are $469, and $449 to San Antonio. Southwest also announced a list of flights scheduled to operate in the direct and partial paths of the celestial event." More on the eclipse. Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13

Members phkrause Posted April 2, 2024 Author Members Posted April 2, 2024 🌑 Total eclipse of traffic Illustration: Brendan Lynch/Axios Next week's total eclipse is expected to draw so many visitors to Dallas-Fort Worth that state officials are warning traffic could be a mess. Why it matters: This is the region's first total solar eclipse since 1878. Texas is one of the prime spots for Americans to see the eclipse. State of play: North Texas expects thousands of visitors this weekend and on Monday for the eclipse. Hotels around downtown Dallas are already 99% booked, per a city memo. Traffic is expected to be especially heavy around parks and other viewing areas. The intrigue: Road congestion is likely to be bad enough that Dallas has canceled trash and recycling pickup for Monday. All sanitation collection will be delayed by a day next week. Flashback: About 12 million people lived in the path of totality for the total solar eclipse in August 2017. Nearly 32 million people live in the path of totality this year, per NASA. D-FW got a partial view of the 2017 eclipse, and Texas Department of Transportation officials said the event served as a lesson for how to prepare for this year. The agency has been preparing for two years for this eclipse, getting equipment and traffic signs together to help direct traffic safely. What to do: Pull over and park before looking at the eclipse. Don't stop on highways or major thoroughfares, per TxDOT. Don't wear eclipse glasses while driving. Keep your headlights on April 8, because the eclipse will make it darker. Be prepared for sudden stops. The bottom line: Don't look directly at the sun. And arrive early to wherever you plan to watch the eclipse. Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13

Members phkrause Posted April 5, 2024 Author Members Posted April 5, 2024 😎 Bill Nye's eclipse viewing tips Bill Nye, sporting a nifty pair of eclipse glasses. Photo: Courtesy of the Planetary Society Bill Nye — yes, the science guy — will head to Central Texas this weekend as part of the Planetary Society's two-day camping festival in Fredericksburg for Monday's total solar eclipse. Fredericksburg, an International Dark Sky Community, is expected to experience 4 minutes and 24 seconds of darkness, among the longest in the country. Dallas-Fort Worth also lies within the path of totality. Here are Nye's eclipse-viewing tips: Stop and listen: "When it really goes completely dark, it's just amazing. The birds chirp; the crickets cricket. There's usually a bit of a breeze because the ground gets cool and then that cold air is squeezing the warm air up." Skip the selfie: "Try to be in the moment. Do not focus — pun intended — on taking pictures. Try to just really be there. It's cool." Look up: "While looking through your eclipse glasses, look out for a couple of bright points of light at the edges, as the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth." "You might see two or even three very bright points of light, and that's where the light is passing by mountains and valleys on the Moon. If I may, how cool is that?" Look around: "And then if you have the presence of mind, don't just look up at the sky in the darkness. Look around. Just look at what everybody else is doing. And of course listen and feel the breeze." More tips Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13

Zoom in: Texas, which appears to be this year's prime eclipse destination, could see a $1.4 billion spending boom from the eclipse. Vermont is expecting to see between $12.9 million and $51.8 million in eclipse-related spending, and Oklahoma may pull in over $20 million. 🔭 Whatever your vantage point, this will be the last total solar eclipse viewable from the contiguous U.S. until 2044.
