👀 Congressional primaries to watch

🗳️ Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) — whose questionable antics have earned her nationwide name ID — is among the lawmakers seeking to keep a near-perfect House incumbent winning streak going when Colorado, New York and Utah hold down-ballot primaries tomorrow.

  • Boebert is seeking re-election in Colorado's deep-red 4th District — across the state from her current Western Colorado district. That's led GOP rivals to call her a "carpetbagger."

🔭 Zoom out: Boebert's effort to win retiring Rep. Ken Buck's 4th District seat has left an opening in the 3rd District that several Republicans are vying to fill.

  • In Colorado's 8th District, State. Rep. Gabe Evans has former President Trump's backing as he battles former state lawmaker Janak Joshi to take on Democratic Rep. Yadira Caraveo in November.
  • In the Colorado Springs-based 5th District, Trump is backing state GOP chair Dave Williams, who's called for burning all Pride flags, against Jeff Crank, a former strategist for the conservative group Americans for Prosperity.
  • ️ In New York, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D) faces a challenge from pro-Israel Westchester County executive George Latimer. Bowman's pro-Palestinian positions have put him at odds with once-close political allies.
  • And in reliably Republican Utah, Rep. John Curtis, Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs, former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson and businessman Jason Walton are vying for the GOP nomination to replace retiring Sen. Mitt Romney. Trump has endorsed Staggs.

Arizona preview

Arizona holds down-ballot primaries tomorrow, Axios' Kathleen Hunter reports.

  • Kevin McCarthy's revenge tour continues in AZ-02, where the former speaker has targeted freshman Rep. Eli Crane, one of eight Republicans who voted to oust him last October.
  • Trump ally Kari Lake is viewed as the likely winner of the state's Republican Senate primary. She would face Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego.
  • In AZ-08, Trump has endorsed two GOP candidates: On Sunday, he backed venture capitalist (and failed 2022 Senate candidate) Blake Masters, who has been a vocal supporter of his running mate, JD Vance. Trump endorsed election denier Abe Hamadeh early in the race.

Big red shock

A map showing the current 2024 election results for U.S. presidential elections.
Data: AP. Map: Axios Visuals

Former President Trump engineered the most astonishing, gravity-defying comeback in the history of American politics, Axios' Zachary Basu writes.

  • Trump won Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia and North Carolina, and leads in the other three swing states — Michigan, Arizona and Nevada.
  • Networks and the AP declared him president-elect just after 5:30 a.m. when he carried Wisconsin, demolishing the Blue Wall.

Why it matters: Across the country — across all demographics — the results tell the same story. Trump improved his margins from 2020, and assembled the most diverse GOP coalition in decades.

The 2024 election delivered a historic repudiation of Democratic rule that's likely to eclipse Trump's upset victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016.

  • Trump won a decisive democratic mandate to return to the White House — making him, unambiguously, one of the most transcendent political figures of our time.

Takeaways

1. Harris' inescapable headwinds.

  • Vice President Harris, unable to shake the Biden administration's baggage, faced the same voter backlash as virtually every incumbent government in the world during the past several years.
  • Inflation — and a dream of returning to the pre-COVID prices of the Trump presidency — far outweighed Harris' pitch on democracy, Trump's divisiveness or even abortion rights.
  • The vice president's 100-day campaign was hailed for its minimal missteps, massive grassroots enthusiasm and huge fundraising, and seemingly had momentum in the final weekend.
  • But money didn't matter, nor did the Harris campaign's vaunted ground game in key battlegrounds: She lost because she failed to convince voters she was the "change" candidate.

2. The red wave arrives.

  • It wasn't just the battlegrounds: Trump carved double-digit gains in deep-blue states, including New York and New Jersey. He helped Republicans take the Senate, and cemented Florida as a conservative haven.
  • Trump built a multiracial juggernaut of a coalition, including a surge in Latino support that could fundamentally reorient American politics for a generation.

His margins were so big they can't be attributed to factors Democrats will second-guess — including Harris' past liberal positions, her running-mate selection or President Biden's handling of the war in Gaza.

3. Democratic DEFCON.

  • It's a tough pill to swallow: Democrats spent all their political capital making the case that Trump — a convicted felon who tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election — was unfit for office.
  • Backed by Trump's own former advisers, they accused him of being a fascist, campaigned on his history of racism and warned that he would govern as an authoritarian with no guardrails.
  • And yet early this morning, America was on its way to electing him anyway — papering over the stain of Jan. 6, plunging the government into uncharted territory, and leaving the Democratic Party searching for answers.

The bottom line: The politics of the most powerful country in the world have lurched sharply to the right, led by a rejuvenated MAGA movement that defied all odds by expanding its voting coalition.

Election results

Donald Trump will regain control of the White House after the former president clinched four battleground states on Election Day. Trump will win Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina and Wisconsin, CNN projects. It's too early to call the other battlegrounds — Arizona, Michigan and Nevada — though many election experts say Harris had no path to the presidency following her loss in Pennsylvania. Trump addressed supporters overnight, before the race was called, heralding what he said "will truly be the golden age of America." Harris will deliver a speech today, her campaign co-chair said, as the final results from across the country continue to come in.
