We don't talk about the BIG sins... the REALLY BIG ONES.

Gossip...

character assassination...

coveting...

jealousy...

pride...

These will keep more people out of heaven then the things we talk about..

How weird is that????

If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God

"These six things the LORD hates,

Yes, seven are abomination to Him:

A proud look,

A lying tongue,

Hands that shed innocent blood,

A heart that devises wicked plans,

Feet that are swift in running to evil,

A valse witness who speaks lies,

And one who sows discord among brethren." Prov 6:16-19 NKJ.

Each and every one of us has what my Pentecostal friend calls a "besetting sin" - the one temptation that we have the greatest struggle to overcome. For some, it's a matter that can be easily known by those around us. For others, this besetting sin is so private that only God Himself can know whether we gain or lose the battle, or even when and how we are tempted. For this reason, our judgment of the relative magnitude of various forms of sin is seriously flawed.

This is why Jesus said we should take care of the log in our own eye first. But don't forget that He also said that once we have taken the log from our own eye, then we can see clearly to take the speck from our brother's eye. We do have a responsibility to help each other overcome. Not by condemning people for having a struggle with sin, which seems to be the most common response within the church, but by praying for each other, confessing our own faults, and giving testimony to how God has given us victory in our own struggles. In other words, encouraging each other so none fall so low that they simply give up the struggle.

I thought God weighted all sins the same? No one sin greater than another.

You are exactly right Amelia. It is only the church that has made a list of the big sins. See the church manual.

hmmm not sure I agree with that... EGW also made some comments about that in STC... the first couple of chapters where she said we view the Drunkard as the most grievous sin HOW ever God views pride etc etc etc as HUGE..

I would view a cild stealing a grape in a store different from the Picton case where he chopped 50 females and had most of their body (except for hands and feet) rendered and fed to pigs.. ( he is not convicted yet... so put an alleged in here and there )

Stan ... if this is true ... then I am a Drunkard and a murderer. The Bible says if you commit one sin you are guilty of all sins. So ... I am a rapist and a murderer. I am certainly no better in the sight of God unless I accept HIS life in the place of mine.

I would be interested in your interpretation of James 2 where it says that if you commit one sin you are guilty of all.

And from Ellen White ... "There must be no favorites, whose sins are regarded as less sinful than those of others" EV 369

Pride is worse, probably, because it makes a person so that God cannot reach them, whereas a drunkard may feel his need.

There are certainly some sins more grevious than others; not all are exactly the same. Some negatively affect others much more, for one thing. Gossip is terrible because it can be virtually the same as murder, ruining people's reputations. I think of the time back in the 1890s and even before when there was quite a movement on to destroy people's trust in Ellen White and in her testimonies.

Leading children or young Christians to be opposed to God or to reject the truth has to be one of the worst, although as the world see it, it probably seems like a fairly unimportant sin.

I just read recently about Satan's techniques in heaven and how he would destroy an opponent's reputation through subtle lies and also how he would get angels' trust by making it appear that he held certain beliefs when he actually held the opposite belief.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Quote:
God does not regard all sins as of equal magnitude; there are degrees of guilt in His estimation, as well as in that of man; but however trifling this or that wrong act may seem in the eyes of men, no sin is small in the sight of God. Man's judgment is partial, imperfect; but God estimates all things as they really are. The drunkard is despised and is told that his sin will exclude him from heaven; while pride, selfishness, and covetousness too often go unrebuked. But these are sins that are especially offensive to God; for they are contrary to the benevolence of His character, to that unselfish love which is the very atmosphere of the unfallen universe. He who falls into some of the grosser sins may feel a sense of his shame and poverty and his need of the grace of Christ; but pride feels no need, and so it closes the heart against Christ and the infinite blessings He came to give.

I kinda agree with this..

Not exactly. It says, "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." (Ja. 2:10) The point here is that if we break the law in just one point, we need a Savior as bad as someone who would break every point of the law. However that is not to say all sins are equal.

I do not agree, Redwood, that all sins are the same in God's sight. Jesus Himself gave indication that some are more grievous to God than others. He said that it would be better for a person to have a millstone tied around his neck and be drowned than to lead astray a child who believes in God. If God saw all sins the same, this statement would not be true.

I will try to specify what I mean by saying if you commit one sin you are guilty of all sins.

Let me point out that whether you commit ONE sin or ALL sins ... you are still guilty and will suffer the curse which is DEATH ... unless you accept the Sacrifice of Jesus.

So ... you are equally pronounced as GUILTY of breaking the law no matter what sin and no matter how small or trivial it may see to you. The wages of SIN is death.

One sin makes you guilty of SIN or ALL sin no matter how you look at it. There may be some sins that hurt the Father more than others. But the results are the same. And personally I will not try to classify which sins are worse. They are all bad because they show a broken relationship with Jesus.

I agree with you Redwood. I think there is also a point to be made in saying that although sin is sin, there are sins that have far reaching consequences. If I steal a pencil from a store I can make it right and probably not suffer too much. But if I murder someone, I can't ever make it right for that person or their family. But yes, God does view sin equally. He hates sin but absolutely loves the sinner.

We can never make gossip right either. That is why some call it charachter assasination. Once those words leave our lips (or keyboards) they are like leaves blowing in the wind. We can never get them back or stop the damage they do.

Yes. All sins are equal in terms of their potential to damn us and our equal need of a saviour. There is no 'tiny sin' that doesn't need salvation.

But sins have different costs *in terms of their temporal effects*. Cheating on your taxes is sin, but its consequences are far, far less heinous than those of rape, for example.

i think it's important to avoid our understanding of the first paragraph above causing us to be unempathic about the second.

Truth is important

I'll agree with that Bravus. But we shouldn't look at our sins as, oh that's ok, it's only a little sin. Or a little white lie. Yes the consequences are different but we need to learn that sin is a sin, is a sin, is a sin.

Since our sins are the only ones we can really do anything about (with the help of Christ, of course) they should be the ones we are most concerned about.

While it is probably debatable as to which type of sin is the greater, there are some sins by an individual that cost the eternal life of many others. Even when there is the possibility a person may be brought to repentance, no one can be sure how many who suffered because of that person's particular sin, may lose their own balance in the struggle to maintain faith, as a result of the repercussions of such a failure.

I believe that ANY sin can rob us of eternal life.

But God will Stand in the place of our sins no matter how fatal they are. The only concern of sin is if they draw us away from accepting Jesus as our Savior. Any lifestyle that takes us away from God is dangerous. But there is NO sin or lifestyle cherished or not cherished that God will not forgive.

Do you have children? Would you spank your 5 yo for accidentally spilling milk on your carpet? But suppose, after telling him not to spill milk on your carpet, he just looks at you and defiantly does so?
