What went wrong was allowing executions to become a medical matter instead of a law enforcement issue. Some countries have routine executions without problem. In their hearts, they remain alcoholics, junkies whatever. Synanon operated a very successful live in treatment center, for various addictive behaviors, e.g., alcoholics, substance abusers, gamblers. Some stayed in the program for years, clean and sober. Even so, when they left the program, even after a decade or more "inside," many returned to their addictive habits.
