I have a lot of things that are totally useless, functionally, but they give me great happiness.. To me that is their function. As I sit here on our deck surrounded by the beauty of the flowers my wife plants each spring and the insects and birds flitting about and hear the birds singing in the nearby trees, it brings me happiness and a sense of peace. That is functional since it improves my outlook, emotional well-being, feeds my aesthetic sensibilities and even spiritually. If a person is task-oriented, the beauty of say, a computer or other tool of the workplace becomes secondary to its performance. And think of a spouse... One could marry a Barbie doll and be disappointed when if the wife is vain and lazy. Quite often a spouse that is plain-looking makes a great helpmate. Or a car. It may look great but be a lemon, performance-wise. Would its good looks compensate for its lack of reliability?
