Adventist Bibles and Commentaries?

I would like to get a hold of a copy of the Bible that the SDA produces that has the commentary with it by Ellen White. I would also like to have a look at what other versions and publications are officially offered by the SDA. Is there a specific link that I can go to, to get these from the SDA, or do you guys go through Amazon for this type of thing?

I'm not trying to start anything here; but I am wary of a Bible that is colored exclusively to suit a particular denomination's viewpoint.  I would consider that more of a paraphrase than a translation.  But to each his/her own.

Perhaps what comes closest to what you have in mind is the "Andrews Study Bible" based on the NKJV, but I just looked at it and saw no EGW quotes in it. And if my memory serves me correctly,  I seem to remember hearing  of an HMS Richards Study Bible based on the KJV that might have EGW commentaries included.  I don't know this for sure.

 

Blanco's "The Clear Word" is a loose paraphrase, which to my knowledge has never been endorsed by the Church to be the SDA Bible.

There are a few. The one put out by Remnant comes in either KJV or NKJV.

There is the paraphrase by Blanco which I would term a devotional rather than a Bible but it is the only one that doesn't have EGW comments in study Bible format. But his thoughts would reflect that he has read her work.

I have a couple put out by Oklahoma Academy. Those are all the KJV. My favourite is the newer Study Bible with Strong's numbering throughout but I also have their former one with the EGW comments (and all the fabulous study helps). The one I use for church has the hymnal included but I believe that is no longer available. I really enjoy reading the comments along when listening to the sermon.

There are also the ones published by Reformation. They have rather extensive EGW comments and always come in the KJV. I just looked on my shelves... and discovered that I don't have any of them But they have had EGW commentaries for years, and the Testimonies all in one volume way before Remnant came out with theirs. Their newest one is called the Vision bible. Our Vision bibles are sold together with a Great Controversy timeline which is excellent. For some reason a couple days ago I picked one up off the shelf with the intention of future purchase. You can also buy a KJV bible that is bound along with the History of Redemption, so that you can read those 8 EGW books together with a Bible (Conflict of the Ages plus STC, MB and I think MH).

I do like that the integrity of the KJV has been preserved in all of them. Study notes are study notes. There are many study Bibles out there.

I have mentioned before that I have not yet looked at the new Women's study Bible nor the Pathfinder ones issued by the General Conference. I'll let you know my opinion when I do. From what I have seen so far they are available in the NKJV.

I should note, too, that the EGW quotations used in the Remnant bibles are different from those in the Reformation or Academy lines. I believe that in the Remnant, Dwight Hall asked around and had people submit their favourites. The Reformation bibles (and the Academy) look like their quotations are taken from volume 7A of the SDA Bible commentary.

These Bibles are available from your nearest ABC. I do have a warning that they are all fairly expensive, but even having said that they are also very popular.

Sojourner, have you got access to an Adventist Book Center in Australia? I would gladly serve you from where I work but I'm afraid that the shipping of these heavy books might make you a poor man.

The HMS Richards bible with study notes is still available (at least from us). The study notes are not throughout the Bible itself but are gathered together in a course format at the back of the book. Still a very popular book and has outlived the George Vandeman series. There is also one with study helps in the same format by Mark Finley. These are excellent for newcomers to Christianity. My main Bible is an old Vandeman It Is Written Heritage Bible, about 35 years old (anyone remember those?). This one has excellent history sections that includes the history of the English Bibles and the manuscripts used plus the time between the Old and New Testaments. It is an Open Bible, published by Nelson. Nelson did a reprint of the Open Bible but although the modern version does have the wonderful Cyclopedic Index (which you can also buy separately now) they are missing the excellent helps that the Vandeman issue has.

The Andrews Study Bible. I have one but admit that I don't use it. But the feedback by those who do has been very positive. When Lonnie Melashenko was here last at Campmeeting he recommended it which helped us sell out but if we had known he was going to recommend it we would have ordered in way more.

The comments throughout this Bible have been submitted by various scholars. Interesting! It comes in the NKJV.

This was Jack Blanco's project and was not intended to be viewed as a study Bible at all. This assignment would be a good one for anyone- he just stated in his own words his thoughts as he read through. It is NOT a translation at all.

A word about adventistbookcenter.com :

This site features only books published or distributed by our presses. I am not sure you would find the Remnant Bible there, but who knows? I think that Dwight Hall worked for the Review in its last days.

The ABCs have all that the website offers plus more, or at least ours does. The British Columbia ABC was never Pacific Press owned and we do have much more freedom and variety in what we offer. Potomac back East is another good one. We sometimes acquire Academy Bibles through them.

Rudywoofs, - The Remnant Study Bible is the one that I had in mind, but I could not recall the name of it - thank you! 

 

Joe, agreed mate, I would not touch the Watchtower Bible with a 10ft pole for that very reason. Yet I consider a commentary a different matter as I approach them as opinion based only. I currently use Halleys Commentary and agree and disagree in places with him.

Gail, until you mentioned it I had no idea that there was such a thing as "Adventist Book Centre" but I will make some enquiries and see if we have that here in Australia. I use the NKJV  but use the Living Bible from time to time as a paraphrase because I relate to its translation texts. I currently use the NKJV Chain Reference Bible because I like to follow the numbers in study which seems to work for me better than the standard study bibles. Thanks for the heads up on the other titles also!

Excellent posts here. Yes those Bibles are very useful. A thing to remember is that Mrs. White did not consider herself a commentator on the Bible. When ever asked questions about exegesis and Biblical interpretation, she would refuse saying that her writings are not to answer those questions. That it was our job to study into these.

 

While I like having Mrs. White's quotes handy, I fear that there are many who want to use her writings for what she tells us not to use them for.

Oops, forgot to mention above that people did not start to call Mrs. White an "Inspired Commentary" until Elder Wilcox coined the term in the1920s in the mess of the after-event of the horrid 1923 General Conference. Mrs. White kept fighting thoughts of using her writings that way.

That is problematic.

 

I enjoy my KJV study Bible with EGW comments, and the Blanco (Clear Word) paraphrase. But when I learn something new, Dr Blanco's wording does not always agree with what I find in the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy.

 

That is not to say or imply anything against Jack Blanco or his paraphrase that he translated from the original languages. He is a fine Christian man and his work is outstanding. But like so many of us some of our comments are tainted by our experiences.
