Stan Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Between two groups of folks on here, and why I get frustrated with some tones easier than others. I think Australian News is also more like Canadian News. Stan Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 What CNN and Fox etc etc seem to do, is tell you what to think of the situation, perhaps someone can word that better than I did. fccool Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Canadians are just better people, and I think that's why US tends to poke fun at them . They are more socially aware, and more communal. In US there tends to be "what's mine is mine" mentality, hence the 24hr news cycle thrives on sensationalizing and pushing the envelope to keep the ratings going. What's ironic is that they cover latest celebrity updates with similar type of "breaking news" frenzy. teresaq 1 Quote

What's mine is mine seems to have a different meaning to you... http://www.philanthropyroundtable.org/topic/donor_intent/donation It is easy to think of philanthropy as something done by the very wealthy, or big foundations, or prosperous companies. Actually, of the more than $300 billion that Americans give to charity every year, only 15 percent comes from foundation grants. Just 6 percent comes from corporations. The rest comes from individuals. And among individual givers in the U.S., while the wealthy do their part (as you’ll see later in this article), the vast predominance of offerings comes from average citizens of moderate income. Between 70 and 90 percent of all U.S. households donate to charity in a given year, and the typical household’s annual gifts add up to between two and three thousand dollars. This is different from the patterns in any other country. Per capita, Americans voluntarily donate something like seven times as much as continental Europeans. Even our kissing cousins the Canadians, whose culture resembles ours in so many other ways, give to charity at substantially lower rates, and at half the total volume of an American household. There are many reasons for this American distinction. Foremost is the fact that ours is the most religious nation in the industrial world. Religion motivates giving more than any other factor. A second explanation is our deep-rooted tradition of mutual aid, which has impressed observers like Tocqueville since our founding days. Third is the potent entrepreneurial impulse in the U.S., which generates overflowing wealth that can be shared, while simultaneously encouraging a “bootstrap” ethic that says we should help our neighbors pull themselves up (partly because, in our freewheeling economy, we could be the ones who need help next time). fccool Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Bonnie, my comment more of a tongue in cheek than anything else. I'm sure that there are plenty of community-oriented people in the US, and my criticism is more towards the corporate media frenzy in the US more than about anything else. Quote

I'm sure that there are plenty of community-oriented people in the US, and my criticism is more towards the corporate media frenzy in the US more than about anything else. So Canada doesn't have 24 hour cable? If they do they don't watch ratings? Or do they just watch cable from the US saying thank God I am not like the US? Funny,I read more of Fox news here on C/A than from Fox news,as I don't spend more than ten minutes a week watching Fox or any other continuous cable "news" Couldn't tell you what is on CNN. Some must sit glued to the media frenzy. Maybe it isn 't so much that as the difference between liberal and conservative viewpoint that irritates some Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. fccool Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 You don't see any obvious difference in the style of the event coverage? That's the whole point of this thread. Quote

Actually I don't as I don't spend my time that way.I rely on those here that claim to hate Fox news to tell me what they heard or read. Then depending on what it is or what shows on my AOL homepage I may look further. I don't watch Canadian cable or news shows. A lot of what is on cable is just plain silly as far as I can see,why do Canadians watch it? On my AOL homepage I can catch up on the trash show Honey Boo-Boo. Just why would I want to? But bet a lot of the higher minded Canadians check that out as well Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. fccool Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 It's right in the OP. Comparison is between CNN and cbsnews coverage. Quote
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted October 30, 2014 Members Posted October 30, 2014 while it's not a "news program", I love Canada's "Just for Laughs" series..
