As a Christian church, Seventh-Day Adventists are a faith community rooted in the beliefs described by the Holy Scriptures. The Church was formed in 1863 out of the movement commonly referred to as the Millerites, following the Second Great Awakening. As with many religions, there are numerous misconceptions and misunderstandings about Seventh-Day Adventists. Test yourself and your knowledge of the basics of the Seventh-Day Adventist faith and its origins.

Very simple test.  Question # 4, could be challenged, but probably on a partial basis of semantics.

I got 100%, Obviously there's a lot more to it than this.

Truth is important

I also got 4 out of 5 correct.  Missed the one one progressivism - I said fundamentalism.

Seems like kind of an odd choice of questions, and very few of them.

So, Naomi, how many times did you go thru it before you  made 100%???  [tongue firmly planted in my cheek]

To all-

"Progressivism" entered more firmly after WWII?  Explain to me again why we marched as opposed to danced? How come there was the old rule of "No swimming allowed " on Sabbath but you could get your legs up to your knees wet? How come there was an emphasis on behavior instead of righteousness by faith???

Seems to me that if that is call "Progressivism", I wonder what "Fundementalism" or "Traditionalism" is......?

Thank you for sharing. I think I learned a couple things about our church. But, can you please make another quiz, this one more focused on the beliefs of the Adventist church? Or have you already made one?

Sorry but I didn't make the quiz, that would be the website that I posted that created the quiz! I just thought that it was quite interesting!

4 of 5.  # 4 threw me.

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.

Having taken the Belief-O-Matic quiz, I would invite everyone to take it and post their top 5 rankings from it.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

(And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

I took the quiz a number of years ago.  It seems that now one must submit their name and email address to get the results...

(I get enough spam email already, so I don't think I'll do that..)

Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

When I first encountered it and did the quiz quite a few years ago, I posted about it on a very conservative Adventist website, and one of the regulars there, a very conservative Adventist pastor, also took the quiz and found that he ranked higher as Catholic than he did as Adventist.  He was not pleased and retook it, I assume to try to change the result which really didn't help him much.  I think it truly grated on him that my ranking by that quiz scored me higher as Adventist then he scored.  As I recall, his retake may have moved the ranking order by one or two places, But he still ranked higher as Roman Catholic than I did and lower as an Adventist.  He proceeded to trash the validity of the test, rather than have a serious conversation, or even engage in serious introspection, about why he apparently missed the mark.

I just dug out my results from it when I took it in 2002.  In order of ranking - 1. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (100%); 2. Seventh-day Adventist (91%); 3. Orthodox Quaker (83%); 4. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (76%); 5 Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (76%).   Roman Catholic showed up at number 8 (71%). My lowest rankings with percentages below 25% were Neo-Pagan, New Age, Secular Humanism, Scientology and Taoism.

For those who have not taken the test here is how they explain the results:

The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on the list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.

It is a fairly broad brush indicator, but I think the take home lesson from doing it is the clear message of how much common ground there really is among the various faiths. As we have so often been reminded, we as Adventists have far more in common with the rest of Christendom, including Catholicism, than not.  When our entering message to other faiths dwells on the differences, it serves more as a wedge to divide and separate us from them, thereby frustrating our efforts to reach them.  And sadly we end up closing more doors, hearts, and minds by doing so than we ever open.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

In my thinking the test also demonstrated the diversity that exists within the SDA denomination.

I think the test has actually stayed pretty much the same 20 questions.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.
