Thought to consider.

Yesterday I was visiting at a church gathering.  A man walked up to me, introduced himself, and asked how I was doing.  NOTE:  I did not remember him, but I had preached a couple of times at a church that he attends when I lived nearby.  As we talked, I asked him if he knew a person who is considered by some to be a controversial figure in Adventism.  I am not a supporter of the ministry of that person, but I thought that this person likely would be.  The man speaking to me promptly told me that he knew this person personally, which I thought he would.  He then asked me if I knew this person's children.  I told him that I did not.  He responded by telling me that all of them had turned out quite well.  He went on to tell me how they differed from their Father.

I am still thinking about this:  Imagine someone suggesting that my children had turned out well due to the fact that they were not like me!

All of my children are adults.  But that is not what I would want said of me.  How about you?

You got a point.

Sometimes it is  better than saying that they turned out like the Father, as in my example.

My children also are adults, and I must say that of the three there is not one who turned out like me.  They are al quite well, in their own way, but certainly are individualist.  Perhaps that is what the man meant to say

I would suspect that he was just trying to make a left handed suggestion that he didn't approve of the father and the kids were an improvement.  Certainly nothing to flatter anyone's ego!!

I posted in a manner that would prevent people from identifying the Father.  Yes, I do  believe that he intended to tell me that the children were an improvement over the Father.

Which is how we would want it, isn't it?

Sadly it reminds me of what Graham Maxwell said about Elder Wilkinson, that as he was approaching his death he repented of his views as he saw that his children not only wanted nothing to do with the church but wanted nothing to do with God and that he felt that his views drove his children and others away.

As a 3/4 lifetime Adventist, is Elder Wilkinson someone of whom most of us should be aware?

He wrote the book "The authorized Bible vindicated" which argues for the King James Only and has influenced both the church and even non-Adventists. He had his Ph.D. in modern languages. He opposed A. G. Daniels, W. W. Prescott and Willie White on what they said Mrs. White taught them about inspiration and very opposed to what was being taught at the 1919 Washington D. C. Bible Conference. In many of our very conservative "independent ministry" groups he is a hero and authority for their views. While he was too young for 1888, he was friends with people who were opponents of Jones and Wagner, although later coming out with reasons why Jones and Wagner were actually teaching the views of their opponents anyway.

He was a good scholar and historian, wrote a powerful book "Truth Triumphant"  but he also set himself up as a theologian without having had the study. While either president or department head at Washington Missionary College (where the religion faculty were thrown out for standing for the truth in 1923 and replaced by people who supported either the more moderate Stephen Haskell, or the more ultra conservative Dr. Wilkinson,) he was assigned a professor who he discovered to be a Catholic spy. Had him removed but never trusted anyone thereafter fearing that the church was full of Catholic spies.

Thanks Kevin. I've watched enough recent online webpages about enemy infiltration into the body of believers, I'm very convinced of the Truth of the Word.

1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;…1 John 4

8Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world....1 Peter 5
