Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted May 14, 2015 Moderators Posted May 14, 2015 (edited) Flare gun, RAft, tarp, Water purifier, I intend to leave the island. Raft: My transportation out from the island. Tarp: My protection from the sun as I float on the ocean. Water Purifier: I can live longer without food than I can without water. Flare Gun: To signal others that I am nearby and in need. IOW, to be rescued. Edited May 14, 2015 by Gregory Matthews Stan 1 Quote Gregory

Moderators Bravus Posted May 14, 2015 Moderators Posted May 14, 2015 I like Gregory's solution a lot: I planned to settle in, Swiss Family Robinson style, and build stuff, hence the saw, he planned to get off the island ASAP! Stan 1 Quote Truth is important

Liz Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 First Aid kit, tent, knife and pot. If I was on an island, I'm not sure I would want to be rescued. You can use the pot to boil water, and the first aid kit should have some things that can have multiple uses. I like this game. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted May 14, 2015 Members Posted May 14, 2015 Tent, Knife, Mirror, and cooking pot Here's my thinking on my choices: Tent: for shelter (I could have used the tarp, but if a tent is available, it would be easier to set up) Knife: all-purpose tool for numerous uses Cooking pot: for boiling water, cooking, catching rain, washing Mirror: for starting a fire and for rescue reflector.. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted May 14, 2015 Moderators Posted May 14, 2015 (edited) My thinking also involves why I would not chose certain items: 1) Matches: Not unlimited supply. In the long term, they would soon be gone. The same goes for many of the listed items--insect spray, vitamins, etc. 2) Rifle: The island is deserted; I have no reason to believe that anything exists on the island that would cause me to need a rifle. 3) Compass: Not needed. I could figure out general directions by watching the path of the sun from sunrise to sunset. That would give me all that I needed. Edited May 14, 2015 by Gregory Matthews Stan 1 Quote Gregory

Moderators Bravus Posted May 14, 2015 Moderators Posted May 14, 2015 Gregory: interesting that you assumed the rifle was antipersonnel, or for large predators. What about for rabbits or other small mammals as food? But I eliminated the rifle (and the sunscreen and flare gun) for the same reason you eliminated the matches - finite supplies. Once the rifle bullets are used up, that's it. I picked the fishing rod for food. We don't *know* whether there are critters to shoot on the island before making our choice, but kind of by definition there's water and therefore fish. And bait isn't too hard to get: lost hooks could be an issue though.I picked the tarp over the tent because it's more versatile: it can be a shelter, but can also act as a bag to carry things or something to slid things from place to place in. It can even act as a 'solar still' to get fresh water... which is a reason I picked it over the water purifier (plus the purifier would either use chemicals that could run out or have a filter that could clog - I figured I could find or make fresh water). The knife has a million uses for cooking and crafting - probably the single most useful thing, IMO.And as I said above, I picked the saw to enable me to build a decent shelter quickly... but it could also enable me to build a raft without having to do that with a stone axe, and a raft is probably a better long-term bet for sailing to safety (another use for the tarp!) than a rubber dinghy...So cool to see everyone's thinking! Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted May 14, 2015 Moderators Posted May 14, 2015 Gregory: interesting that you assumed the rifle was antipersonnel, or for large predators. What about for rabbits or other small mammals as food? Well, actually part of my reasoning was the limited supply bullets. But, there was another reason: Looking at the overall picture of the rifle it appeared to me to be somewhat useless for bringing down rabbits, birds and small mammals. It was clearly not a 22 cal. But, I will acknowledge that it was also not a 50 cal. However, it appeared to me to be large enough that the hydrostatic shock of the bullet hitting the bird or small mammal would be enough to blow the creature into such small parts that it would be useless as to providing any useable amount of food. To test this, simply take a normal hunting rifle and fire a found into a watermelon. Quote Gregory

Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted May 14, 2015 Administrators Posted May 14, 2015 (edited) I guess my question is this. If I am stranded on a deserted island and have a choice among all of these things, which would have to be available for me to pick from, why am I limited to only 4? Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted May 14, 2015 Administrators Posted May 14, 2015 Depends on the island conditions... Maybe the more correct issue would be what use could I make of each item and which would be good for escape, survival, or long term quality of life if I decide I really would rather just stay put on that island. And the exact conditions would tend to change the need for some of them. If an island with no potential fuel (barren with no wood) to keep a fire going, of what use would stuff for cooking or fire building? If I had an idea that the island was within possible reach of the mainland, the raft, knife, fishing pole and compass would be useful. If a large island, then the rifle and the knife would be useful things to have. If I was ship wrecked the hand saw might be helpful to repair the boat or cut it up for firewood. Oh good I won't be the only one on the island. We can pick 8 things between us! wow! like its Chistmas!
