That reminds me of a joke that goes something like this....   "What do they call the student who is not popular, completely nerdy, and a computer geek after high school ends?"

Ain't the boss thing true!

Sad thing is my own brother was always fawned over for being so good looking and was popular with all the girls. Unfortunately, he was never able to hold a job better than a dishwasher in a bar as an adult except during the time he was drafted into the military. He never could figure out why his brothers and sister had careers and an OK life when he struggled so hard, sort of. He had no motivation to finish school, although he always had plans to go back to school. Even at the age of 58, he was telling me he was going back to school! Sad thing is today, his own son is bouncing around with no accomplishment and at nearly forty is planning on going back to school. So, when your kids are just average and not always popular, as long as they are studying, they have a brighter future than some of the really popular kids in school.
