When I was younger I always remeber fellow Adventist shunning movies and the theater. I'm a huge movie buff, and I go to the theater all the time. I do stay away from blatantly evil or vulgar things, but sci fi, fantasy, action, comedy, I love em. Also, I remeber particularly when the Harry Potter movies began releasing they were a big hype in my adventist realm here. I've seen one or two, and honestly I do belive they have a bad agenda but they don't phase me. I just see them as entertainment and when the movie is done, so are my thoughts on it. What are your thoughts on all this? Also, I know egw talks about this but am I mistaken or was she, for her time, referring to live action theater? Quote

I believe your correct about EGW talking about the theater's of her day. Most if not all from what I've read, had bars and lots of drinking and smoking going on! Others might be able to speak better to this than I can. Also there is a thread about secular movies, etc. Check it out. There *are* some who produce bad movies which aren't suitable for consumption. I screen what I watch by calling the theater and asking if I can take my 8-yr-old daughter to see the picture. If they say 'No,' then I don't even want see the movie. That advice was given to me by Sir Lawrence Olivier." For me movie watching is like reading a book, only condensed. Thats why I have a fair size collection, get more out them when watching again. But maybe Jesus is always there He's just waiting for the right time to be made known or waiting on us. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. I must say we were very happy when they started installing aids for the visually impaired so my husband can enjoy movies again too. Harry Potter movies were fantastic as were the books. It's a great saga of good versus evil. What annoys me are the hypocritical Adventists who will poo-poo HP but uplift C.S. Lewis. Like or dislike a book/movie based on its merits, don't just use a blanket statement condemning one, and then uphold another book/movie that has those same elements. I also love awesomely bad movies, like The Conqueror with John Wayne, or just about any Syfy movie. Look at the context of Josh 1:9. You can be assured of God's presence when you are on His errand, but I don't find that assurance in Scripture when His people have ventured into forbidden ground. Ask the Lord what is helpful for you and what tends to pull you earthward. I enjoy documentaries. The war ones are not the most positive material but knowledge of the Holocaust, say, the genocide of the Armenians or the results of tyrannical regimes helps me be historically informed. It is one thing to read about the tens of thousands of casualties the Bible describes in ancient battles and another to see real images. Just saw the biopic of Keith Richards... It gave me an insight as to what influenced him musically and a bit into his mindset. I sometimes pray for celebrities; I think that not all of them are anti-religious but in any case you never know what can happen as a result of a prayer. The entertainment environment can't be easy to break away from but it can be done. Other than that I also like foreign films. They often reflect the political or social realities of where they come from. I remember once seeing a film about a young man in Israel whose turn had come up to strap on a pack of dynamite and get on a bus. In some areas that is real life. Another involved the comedy of UN involvement in the Yugoslavian war. One Chinese film I saw tackled the futility of trying to get medical help in Communist China back in the day. I like German-made movies about WWII for how they relate what it was like for the ordinary German in the time of Hitler. European acting is superb and the storylines can be profound. Administrators Gail Posted October 10, 2015 Administrators Posted October 10, 2015 Historywise, a recent one I saw was called, Admiral, and it was a true story about a Korean admiral in the 1500s that took on the Japanese navy with 11 ships and WON due to his outstanding strategic skill. The movie about Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire whom Princess Diana quoted when she said, "There are three in this marriage," was excellent. Georgiana was Diana'a ancestor and was born at Althorp. Truth is often stranger than fiction and history does repeat itself more than we care to admit.
