Defend herself,  O.K., Let us look at that for a minute:  Under the law, covering one's face, if one is being hit in the face is defense.  In this case as a police officer was involved a legal defense might be considered "resisting arrest."   However, striking back with one's fist would be considered an aggressive act.  It might be considered justified, but, it would be considered more than a defense.  In the case of a police officer, no, to strike back would not be a good  idea.

Let me illustrate:  A husband hits his wife and she hits him back because she says that she wants to defend herself.  Typically they both will be charged with a crime.  In some places, it may be called a "mutual affray,"  or something like that.  But, I am aware of many cases where both have been charged.   Yes, in some cases, it was considered justified.  But, often it was not considered justified.

To hit someone is considered an aggressive and often a crime.  To hit someone just because you have been hit by them is not ipso facto  justified.

It is a little unreasonable to assume a security officer knows the history of each student in a school of over 2,000 students.

No one knows if this student has a history of defying authority. The student does not live in an orphanage. She lives in a foster home.

Because of the circumstances should a student be giving a pass to refuse to comply with the teachers demands?

How wold you have handled the situation? Say I am sorry I asked you to comply?

Any attempt to get this student to comply verbally was not working. Any attempt to put hands on her and try to move her is going to have her striking back.

Do you let one student call the shots in front of other students and expect to keep order?

I'm wondering why the Spring Valley High School students staged a "walk-out" protest supporting the deputy who got fired .... students don't usually do something like that unless they feel strongly about it.

The student who was interviewed said the students respect the deputy, that he has been the one to stop trouble at the school.. When asked if the deputy used too much force, the student replied, "I think he did, but at the same time,... uh... it wasn't called for, but it *was* called for for him to remove her out of class."  http://atlanta.cbslocal.com/2015/10/30/hundreds-of-students-stage-walkout-supporting-fired-officer-ben-fields/

It really sounds like the quandary is how the young lady could have been removed from the class without using force.

On the videos, where the deputy appears to toss the student – it appears that he may have been trying to keep her from hitting other students as she was flailing about.

Hundreds of students protest firing of ‘body slamming’ SC cop

Hundreds of students at Spring Valley High School, South Carolina walked out in protest over the firing of school resource officer Ben Fields. The sheriff deputy’s lost his job for slamming and dragging a female student out of a desk earlier this week.

The students walked out of class 10 am Friday morning and into the school’s atrium for a 15 minutes protest before administrators ordered them to class. Video and photos captured the event.

Students wore T-shirts that said “#BringBackFields” or “Free Fields.”

He was a great guy,” student London Harrell told local WISTV. “He protected us and everything. He was our school resource officer. We always could depend on him and everything. Every time I saw him, he was always joking around with people. It was never like ‘Oh, I’m about to body slam you.’”

Principal Jeff Temoney said none of the students would be suspended if they returned to class.

“We’ve heard your voices, okay,” Temoney said according to WISTV. “We appreciate you taking time to do this, but again, as you know, we always focus on teaching and learning, so let’s head on back to class.”

Principal Temoney released a statement several hours later about the walkout, which said students and staff were safe during the protest.

Fields, who is white, was recorded on cell phone video using force on an African-American student during a school discipline incident. When shared on social media, the footage caused national outrage on the use of force in schools and by school resource officers. Fields was fired on Wednesday.

The incident led to multiple investigations by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the South Carolina state police, the Justice Department and the high school.

The sheriff’s department interviewed witnesses and reviewed several cell phone videos taken in the classroom, and concluded the moves Fields used in the confrontation were “not acceptable.”

After talking to Fields, Sheriff Leon Lott said the deputy “tried to do his job,” but that he should not have used force against the student. While the teen was non-compliant and disrespectful, Lott said, she was not a danger to the deputy.

“This has been a very difficult situation for all of us,” Lott said, urging the community to use the incident as a teachable moment.

“Police officers make mistakes too, and they have to be held accountable. That’s what we’ve done,” said the sheriff, adding that the student should also be held responsible for disrupting the classroom.

Fields’ attorney, Scott J. Hayes, issued a statement after the officer was let go.

“We believe that Mr. Fields’ actions were justified and lawful throughout the circumstances of which he was confronted during this incident,” the statement read. “To that extent, we believe that Mr. Fields’ actions were carried out professionally and at that he was performing his job duties within the legal threshold.”

Meanwhile, Todd Rutherford, the attorney for the girl, who has not been identified, revealed that the student suffered injuries to her face, neck and arm as a result of the incident.

The question I continue to ask, with no answer except to say it was all her fault. I doubt anyone here would treat their own child that way so why should someone else be allowed to do so? What is being missed is the proper methods of handling such a situation. The officer is to blame for his being fired. The student deserves to be blamed for disobedience but not the improper treatment.

By the way, GM, I suggested was, if the student tried to defend them-self after being thrown across the room, not before, would it not be understandable.

What is also being missed is the very real possibility of being injured when thrown across the room, would people still blame her then? What if her neck had been broken?

I'm would be willing to bet that some change in policies and procedures will be looked into and hopefully made.

We are very quick to 'fix' blame with out any real facts, only video and media reporting, tis the human condition! We includes myself.

There seems to be far too much made of the girl hitting the officer.  I have seen the various videos multiple times.  I could only see one possible strike by her and that was not real obvious since it was after he had grabbed her and/or the desk and at the moment she and the desk were being flipped over and thrown to the ground.  I suspect that in that instant he was not even aware she might have struck him sine his own far more forceful movements very much overshadow anything she might have physically done in reaction/response to being forcefully thrown to the floor while still in the desk.

A substantial part of his training was or should have been techniques and strategies to de-escalate and diffuse the situation.  Training should have given him better assesment skills.  Violent and forceful action were not called for.  Immediate removal was not called for, because she was not herself threatening harm to herself or others. As some have suggested, clearing the area of other students would have removed her audience and potential mob reaction which can easily escalate out of control.  He was outnumbered. He also turned his back to the rest of the students potential exposing himself to being jumped from behind.  He should have cleared the room before taking steps to remove her.  If she refused to get out of the desk, rather than ripping her forcefully from it and risking injury to her or himself, either drag it with her in it, or get assistance to pick the desk up with her in it and carry it out of the room.

Even after he started to escalate the situation he had opportunity to de-escalate. It is worth noting that the sheriff specifically identified the one thing where he crossed the line and for which he got fired. Forcefully throwing her across the room.

In the situation when he entered the room, it was essential that he take command and control of the situation. But that first and foremost requires self-control. He lost control of the situation when he lost control of himself. Violence and force are not real control, but rather poor substitutes and illusions of control. They only work on a temporary and very short term basis.  And they require substantial repair and remedial effort afterwards to correct the collateral damage and unintended consequences that almost always go with them.  In the end force and violence almost always do more harm than good.

Many  of you know that I have a son who has for many years served as a Federally certified police  officer.  He and I have discussed this event in detail.  He has some very strong feelings on this event.  Both as to how the officer reacted, what the video shows the girl doing and as to how the public has reacted to all of this.

He has clearly used this as a teaching point for his daughter as to how she should respond to an order by a police officer.

He has been in situations where he has had to fire so called "rubber" rounds at people in order to regain control of the situation.

He has been in situations where he had a  decision to make as to whether or not he would pull the trigger on a weapon that would send a potentially killing round into a human being, and in each case he has not pulled the trigger.

Several years ago, he reported two fellow police officers for mistreatment of a human being.  For the next three years, he went through (I can not write the word in this post.) for reporting  fellow officers.  As a result of him turning them in, other officers substantiated what he had reported.  One took a plea bargain and the other went to trial.  Following the results of the trial things began to go well for him.

The Governor of the State gave him an award in a public ceremony.  But, the Governor did not feel free to say what it was for, so it was listed for some other thing.

Immediate removal was not called for:  Wrong.  The school had requested her immediate removal, by a police officer.  It was not his call to make.  That was the call of the school and it was his duty to comply and remove her.

Right after this video was shown on the News ..I was dumbfounded and appalled. I looked at my Bubby and said... " you got to be kidding me...  He tossed her around like a rag doll! What happened to our society? when i was a teen in the 70's the kids got very nasty and rude and no one assaulted them! " then thinking for a few moments ( thinking about the kids in my school and trying to remember how things were handled ) I asked him " what should have been done instead when the kid is rude and disrespectful?' My Bubby  answered .."The officer could have glided that desk with her in it right out of the classroom door and not hurt her. It would help deescalate the situation and give more time and options to handle it it better like calling the Principle or Parents ... while the kid is sitting there at her desk .. in the hallway looking silly"

He is so smart! Of course he is with me. :P

# jogging my memory ..I think that is how it was handled one time?

Perhaps I could have been clearer, because I think you misunderstand what I said. I thought I explained the immediacy issue.  At the point he entered the room, there was not an immediate or imminent threat of harm or danger to anyone. There was no need at that point to take immediate action. Especially that of immdiate force and violence.  Removal, yes.  InstanIous removal because of an immediate risk of serious harm to anyone.  No. Absolutely not.  My point is that there was time, and opportunity to take a less forceful, less confrontational approach.  De-escalating the confrontation between the teacher and the student was a part of that.

I have worked in just such circumstances where de escalation achieved the desired result and avoided potential serious harm and consequences.  But it takes a more time to calm the situation down.  And from everything I have seen and read, the officer had sufficient time to implement a better approach that could have removed her without trauma or drama.  And we would have never heard of this classroom disruption.  And the officer would still have his job.

One of my colleagues in Ministry put it like this on his Facebook page,.....couldn't have said it better myself!

From the Desk of the Seed Planter... Justice or Else!
It's amazing to hear all that is coming out in the rinse concerning the young girl that was physically abused by the insecurity guard in SC earlier this week. Opinions ad infinitum, continue to litter social media since the video was posted. (Somebody else took their phone out in class.) Opinions are a dime-a-dozen. One white woman columnist tried her best to get mainstream America to realize this egregious action against this African American youth by saying, "Imagine if she was white?" There would be NO video. It wouldn't have happened. Other comments blame the victim for not giving up her phone to the teacher, thus rationalizing her vicious attack by the cop. "If she hadn't taken out her phone it wouldn't have happened," some opined. So that's the consequences for her taking her phone out in class? Wow! An underlying premise that surfaced is that Black youth are so disrespectful. (That's a very broad brush, and another discussion). Well I'm NOT giving my opinion. I am giving FACT. Violence against African American girls and women by so-called law enforcement is on the increase. His act was straight up violence against this young girl! Besides being traumatized she could have been hurt worse, even paralyzed! His violent actions were wrong, unacceptable, and there is NO excuse for it! When will we finally get it that all violence against women is unacceptable. Period. So get use to this truism: Justice or Else! Since she didn't get justice, I guess the pending civil action is the, Or Else! By the way, Black Lives Matter!

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

What I'm seeing in the world today is, there is no respect for authority, period!! And the main reason, is that the children are not being taught that in the home. Parents want others to teach them that, but than are unwilling to backup the authority figures!! Back when I went to school, I had an incident happen to me and a friend. The school had a policy that no one was aloud to leave the school grounds during the day. Well me a friend decided that we would violate that, so we snuck out. When we returned the principal wanted to know where we were. I smart mouth him right of the bat, wont tell you my exact words, not very nice. He picked both of us up by the throats and lifted us up in the air. Told me never to say that again and never to do what we had done, leave the school during school hours. Called our parents. Now, did he over react? Yes!! Imagine if they had cellphones than!! What do you think my parents did when notified of what happened?? They backed the principal and when I got home, was given a spanking to boot. I look at it this way. What does the 5th Commandment say? Its asking us to honor our parents! Does it say "only when they are good to us, etc., etc." I'm not saying that the officer was right in how he dealt with the situation, but hindsight is always 20/20.  according to reports this officer was very good in doing his job, and also maybe we should be looking at what all the other students are saying!! There not justify how the officer reacted but that obviously the student had been a problem throughout the year and saying to all that also over reacting by firing him isn't helping anyone! My 2 cents worth here.

There ins't the slightest indication this had a single thing to do with race.To even indicate this would not have been an issue if the girl were a smart mouth belligerent white girl is simply stretching to make it racial.

Imagine a class room full of students that decide to take their cell phones out during class. Why are cell phones even allowed in a class room?

Great way using texting to cheat when the mood strikes.

My point is that there was time, and opportunity to take a less forceful, less confrontational approach.  De-escalating the confrontation between the teacher and the student was a part of that

The student was asked three times. She refused to comply. To believe the girl would have calmly sat in her desk while they moved it to the hall is not to reasonable. She had already defied  authority that she did not appear to believe could do anything about her challenge.

While it is possible her outburst could have been influenced by the death of her mother, I am not so sure I believe that a reason, more like an excuse after the fact. It is more likely defiance  of authority was a pattern.

If there were cell phones back then, people might have posted your picture all over the Internet and other people might have said what a rotten spoiled brat you were, that yout parents should have taught you better, that you should have respected your education better and that the whole world was going to hell in a handbasket because of your entire unruly generation. Lucky for you, there weren't cell phones or tablets for insta-share.

Lucky for us though...in general, and statistically speaking, parents ARE doing a great job of parenting these days. There is less violence among that age group in years, less use of illegal and illicit drugs, less teenaged prgnancies; greater volunteerism, greater college enrollment, greater charity.

Find a group of 13-24 year olds and spend some serious time with them. You'll see what I mean. Else, read some statistical data available on the web. Google "crime rates among teens past 40 years" and "teenage pregnancy rates" and "helicopter parenting" and "college enrollment rates".

I believe I come off as a Clod sometimes..talking about my Pic of God like it trumps  everyone's else's... or at least disparages the more conservative people here. Ugh! I am so sorry to be that way and give that impression to people here.

Let me share something...

In my heyday i partied with my sister and her stripper friend .I will call her Sandra (ppssst..not real name!). Good times!  Under the Influence Sandra was sitting next to me while I was driving and saw i wasn't going to move away from a line of cars parked on the curb. Quick thinking ..she moved my steering wheel avoiding those cars. i didn't realize I was as drunk as I was till that moment. My Buddy was to drunk to notice in the backseat. This was in the San Francisco area about 20 years ago (?). Coming back from a party at my sisters.

Well anyway Sandra  became a facebook  friend recently and our lives are very different now. She sees I'm 'religious' cause of the stuff i put on my wall. And has been very respectful.

well a few days ago I put this up on my fb wall ....56360f323ff67_tossedherlikearagdolltweet

Then Sandra put a comment under that .... "Well, I guess I have problems then" and I saw it and had many thoughts go thru my head and thought about responding in many ways but ultimately just let it sit by itself. Now I must say I haven't seen her in forever and we  just partied together thrice upon a time. She was fun! I was fun! we had fun! ...So i never really knew her and she don't really know me.

Well my sister and I talkin on the phone today and she said  'Sandra thinks she may have offended you .but I told her Gay ( ppssst ..not my real name ) isn't like that and don't get offended when people disagree with him oh his facebook page."..... God bless my Sister. She knows me. She has seen fights break out on my wall (between the more traditional and the more progressive )and i don't delete them or block them etc. And I thought about all the strong wording religion and politics memes and the etc. of my melo dramatic discourse i put on my fb wall. could easily lead people to think I get offended and attack! Well I have! Sometimes its no biggie and other times I do get upset. People who I don't know it is easier just to see them as just an opinion or bad theology or disagreeable politics.  I knew Sandra face to face and know she is more than her opinions of politics and religion Etc .

We all are!

Here with strangers .. I choose Who to engage and who to avoid for Sanity reasons... I can still engage and avoid as a Christian seeing Jesus having  Boundaries and all that.  But I can be a real clod and obnoxious . I have used scripture wrongly to shut down people or to put a Barrier up. I have a big mouth. And things can fly out. Then when my head is gets clear and see the carnage! and I can get really depressed that I don't live up to what I espouse.

And BTW... Miscommunication and talkin past each other is rampant all across the INTERNET. It is the nature of the beast without eye to eye contact, tone or body language. And esp without a meaningful history outside this Computer screen!

I cant change my theology/idealogy/politics  cause I'm a wreck in portraying it. I don't have a good consistent bone in my body.

...on page 1 . . on the 22nd Post I put up my judgement.. "Every post by every single person we see here represents (at least at that moment) where people are in their image of GOD. What This God must look like swirling or twirling in their heads. Sometimes echo the voice of their parents of GOD that are never called into true question or reflection? Ministers and Teachers storied their ideas of GOD? Calamities and disasters solidifying our haunts of GOD?   Reading The Bible with these perceptions can dim or even black out what a Great GOD we have. And conversely we show up here and talk about our God and how things should be handled. "

Its true! I believe that! I believe we all share our Ideal of GOD in what we say. i have figured that out recently..but is there a better way to share without me going out of my way to insinuate judgement over others who disagree with my pic of God?

It comes at great expense.... I alienate others. Something JESUS never did!

I want people to agree and applaud and say 'good going' and 'thata boy!" to me here!

But That is not goin to happen much and I cannot base my self worth on things like that.and .. conversely.. when people say the opposite I cant let that get to me either. But it happens.

Ideally, I  get my LIFE from what God says about me (not true enough..I still have hurts, hangups, and habits that says otherwise). And God says the same about me  that He says all about all people too.

And I ask for forgiveness For ever making anyone not know that in my direct Discourse with them.

I may have to send individual messages?  It may have to happen.I know not everyone goes to this particular thread and esp. not making a beeline to read my far out liberal thoughts.

And I know I have hurt other people without knowing it.

I do have people on ignore for my sanity..not punishment. :)  but I think i can receive private messages from everyone. Umm.. i might have to look into that.

My long ago party friend gave me a glimpse of myself on how i am on the Internet and it aint pretty. Some also here have shown me. Oh man!

I, by the way, am not fishing for compliments or curses ... I just want to say I'm sorry who ever I have offended.

To all.. May the joy of the LORD be your Strength!

:)

We may soon see the day when brutality by law officers and military personnel will be the norm, whether against non-compliants or compliants. I strongly believe that for many SDA"s, conservative political culture Trumps (uppercase T intentional) truth. What do I mean? Among other things, systematic police brutality, police corruption and for example The Patriot Act give a clear indication that the USA maturing into its role as the lamb-like beast. Many Adventists seem to put aside our prophetic understandings to accept the conservative political cultural narratives about liberty, the military, black and latino people, Muslims, and even Israel. They applaud, for example, the denigration of minorities, and are unable to even "see" their mistreatment. It is fascinating to see and hear pretzel like explanations of what this cop did despite the clear evidence on the tape.

On a local level I see SDA's quitting churches, academy's, and colleges because there are too many black and brown people coming. This is not of God and IMHO the spirit of persecution is a cousin of the spirit of racism. Some may see this as off topic but The Patriot ACT and what happened to this girl are on the same spectrum.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

I wonder if that is a one of the facets of Modern Christianity turning from a Lamb to a Lion that many SDAs dont think about applying to bible prophesy.

I know SDA Christians  who are very pro gun and all about protecting family and property ( I live in the mountain woods ) . It used to be not like that. Or maybe I was ill informed when i was younger...or naive about Generations of SDA thinking.. I don't know.

I do know Desmond Doss* was a hero for rescuing others without using a gun (conscientious objector). I thought  that was our collective Belief System.

The GOP Platform is all about that stuff.Flying in the Face Of JESUS CHRIST/Gospel example of non violence and self sacrificial LOVE and blessing and loving and serving our Enemies of our Church.Morals, and Nation..  .

and Now we have a SDA on the national Scene promoting this ANTICHRISTian theology?

I'm not sure!

we will see....

It would be Horrific if Dr. Ben Carson (an SDA) promotes this religion and power thing for the Common Good and National Security.

That is not what God is all about.

I see what you are saying Tom Wetmore..I'm just taking it further into Prophesy.

I think this generation will see Jesus Finally come!

# i have a feeling my thoughts will go over many heads due to my outlandish questioning combined by poor wordsmithing.

maybe i will try again another time another place :)

To think that ..

... could it be an SDA Remnant Church Leader of the Free World (if Carson becomes Prez) could start the final push of Mixing Politics and Religion (Church n State) ???????????????????

Caiaphas (Church) Pilate (State) King Herod (Greed)  (all representing self protection) and the others killed GOD

Could the same happen to God's Friends? Us! by Us?

Like History repeating it self in  some ironic outlandish chain of events?

Protecting ... Home then Church then Nation?

Too disturbing to think about

I don't hear Dr. Ben Carson lifting up JESUS and How GOD was to the outcasts/marginalized/non normative as sinners. Calling Christians to be that way too in heart (most republicans call themselves Christians..its not like Carson is talkin with a Ton Atheists at his rally's ..Many SDAs and Evangelicals are there Excited ). Nothing about suggestions and ideas that Look  like the JESUS I fell in love with.

Very Troubling to constantly see on the National stage.

and it goes over SDA's heads!

Lamb like JESUS

Lion like _________

in America before our very eyes

There is one wonderful thing if it is true ( i hope its not on SDA Hands)

JESUS could come in the next few years!!!!!

and be done with it

This world is not our Home.. even though we seem to make if very comfortable for ourselves

Lazarus, may the Joy of the Lord be your Strength!

P.S. what a crazy thought! An Adventist doing such a thing!

For all Eternity God waited in anticipation for  You  to show up to give You a Message - YOUR INCLUDED !!! { a merry dance }?️‍?

" If you tarry 'til you're better
You will never come at all "   .. "I Will Rise" by the late great saved  Glen Campbell

If your picture of God is starting to feel too good to be true, you're starting to move in the right direction. :candle:

"My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite."

I recall from years gone by of a small boy being teased...or was it a girl? The lanky older child was holding the swinging youngster at bay without a problem.

A teen's reach esp. female is not as long as an adult male. It would probably be prudent to have a female resource officer to assist w/ female students. Just a thought...
