Members phkrause Posted September 19 Author Members Posted September 19 A measles surge meets vaccine skepticism As vaccination rates decline nationally and measles cases rise globally, experts warn the US measles death toll could climb this year and beyond. Medical professionals stress that vaccines are highly safe and effective, and serious vaccine injuries are extremely rare. But Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continues to cast doubt on their safety and effectiveness. On Thursday, he received a standing ovation at a conference hosted by the anti-vaccine advocacy group Children’s Health Defense, where he delivered the keynote address. Amid the worst US measles outbreak in decades — driven largely by unvaccinated people — Kennedy said he would not restrict access to vaccines but spoke critically about them and vowed to fight for those who share his views. + Read more: Kennedy tells anti-vaccine group that he’ll ‘stay in this fight’ + Plus: How common are measles deaths in the US as vaccination rates fall? I've been thinking about that, and for me I know no one that has died from a vaccine shot! Now that doesn't mean that there are people that have not died from vaccines? No!! But, from what I've read it's a very low number, and also from what I've read they're also other complications that contribute to the death total!!! In August, the FDA approved the nation’s first mRNA-based flu vaccine for use in people 50 and older. The vaccine, called mFlusiva, is now available at more than 13,000 locations across the US, according to drugmaker Moderna. A company trial found it was about 27% more effective than traditional flu vaccines during the 2024-25 respiratory virus season. The vaccine uses the same mRNA technology as Covid-19 shots, which could let manufacturers develop flu vaccines closer to the start of the season and better target the strains currently circulating. + Read more: The first mRNA flu vaccine is now available for older adults. Members phkrause Posted October 8 Author Members Posted October 8 Here’s why experts say now is an ideal time to protect yourself from flu It’s October and time for flu shots. Medical experts urge getting a flu vaccination soon, before influenza starts spreading widely — and to get up to date on protection against other fall respiratory viruses, too. Updated COVID-19 shots are available now, plus shots for people especially vulnerable to another winter risk called RSV. Read more. Why this matters: Every year flu alone causes hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations in the U.S. and kills tens of thousands. Fall vaccine advice usually comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its independent advisory panel. But this year that panel, which influences state and insurance vaccine policies, is caught in a court battle and the CDC hasn't updated its flu advice. Now doctors’ groups are filling the gap.
