In 10 days, the U.S. will fall off a "child care cliff." That's when pandemic-era funding for the industry runs out, Axios Markets co-author Emily Peck writes. As many as 70,000 centers, looking after 3.2 million children, may close after the funding runs out, according to a widely cited estimate from The Century Foundation. America’s child care crisis is holding back moms without college degrees The limited availability and high costs of quality child care are holding back American moms without college degrees. Women’s participation in the workforce has recovered from the pandemic, reaching historic highs in December. But that masks a lingering employment crisis among moms who lack a college degree. Why this matters: The dilemma is common in the United States. In 2022, more than 1 in 10 young children had a parent who had to quit, turn down or drastically change a job in the previous year because of child care problems. And that burden falls most on mothers, who shoulder more child-rearing responsibilities and are far more likely to leave a job to care for kids.   The gap in employment rates between mothers who have a four-year degree and those who don’t has only grown. In interviews, mothers across the country shared how the seemingly endless search for child care, and its expense, left them feeling defeated. It pushed them off career tracks, robbed them of a sense of purpose, and put them in financial distress.

Federal money underpins the entire child care industry, vital to millions of American families. ?‍⚖️ A federal judge has temporarily blocked the administration from freezing more than $10 billion for child care in five blue states on its claims of widespread fraud. The administration is also asking states to better justify their spending — a request that some state officials and advocates say is onerous. Some states are trying to fund their own efforts. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) recently proposed a massive investment toward universal statewide child care. Yet they can only do so much. ? Mn estimates are 450 million in child care fraud. It is very unlikely that this is unique to MN. The waste and fraud  in our state is almost impossible to get your head around. Then times that by all the other states especially with those where liberals are in charge

A Tax Plan for Statewide Universal Childcare

New York guarantees free education to children living in the state. Rapid development of free public schools in the second half of the nineteenth century culminated in an 1894 amendment to the New York State Constitution establishing a right to free schools for “all of the children of this state.” The public school system built in this period entitles New Yorkers aged five to twenty-one to free education. More recently, policymakers, including Governor Hochul and Mayor-elect Mamdani, have committed to finishing the project by extending universal free education and care to children under the age of five.¹
