Canadians skip U.S. travel

Canadian travel to the U.S. fell 25% last year, Axios' Rebecca Falconer writes from a new report.

  • The decline has persisted into 2026, the Canadian government report finds.

The findings offer the clearest look at the pain the U.S. tourism industry is suffering amid trade tensions, tariffs and President Trump's repeated "51st state" comments.

  • Canada is typically the largest source of international visitors to the U.S., making the decline especially painful for tourist towns near the border.

📉 By the numbers: Statistics Canada says that Canadians' return trips from the U.S. declined year over year for 11 consecutive months in 2025.

  • That's the longest sustained decline since digital records began in 1972, aside from the COVID-19 pandemic.

💸 Canadians' spending on visits to the U.S. fell to about $13.3 billion in 2025, down from about $15.7 billion in 2024.

  • They replaced many U.S. trips with domestic vacations or overseas travel, the report finds.

What we're watching: More recent data suggests the decline in Canadian visits to the U.S. may be easing, driven by a bump in car trips.

Canada set to announce retaliatory tariffs as Trump tells its leaders to ‘fall in line’

TORONTO (AP) — Canada will announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday after relations deteriorated sharply Monday, with President Donald Trump telling Canadian leaders to “fall in line” or face consequences “far WORSE” than existing tariffs and Prime Minister Mark Carney accusing Washington of trying to subordinate Canada.

🇨🇦 Inflation fears point true north

The U.S.–Canada trade fight is shaping up to become an all-out trade war, threatening America's path to lower inflation, Axios' Courtenay Brown and Neil Irwin write.

What's going on: Neither side is backing down, with Canada expected to target politically sensitive U.S. sectors — like steel, dairy and agricultural equipment — with tariffs in the run-up to the midterms.

  • Trade talks collapsed Friday night, triggering 50% U.S. tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, including wine, cement and dairy products.
  • Canada's retaliation doesn't take effect until Sept. 8, leaving time for an off-ramp. But for now, neither side sounds interested in restarting talks.

The big picture: Economists had growing confidence that the inflation hit from Trump's tariffs was largely in the past.

  • The new Canada tariffs — and any further tit-for-tat actions — threaten to revive those pressures just as the Iran war's energy shock pushes prices higher.

Canada strikes back at US with retaliatory tariffs as trade war escalates

TORONTO (AP) — Canada struck back at the United States on Tuesday with retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, dairy products, appliances and farm equipment, as the trade war between the once-friendly neighbors escalated sharply.

Canadian Countertariffs

Canada yesterday announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on roughly $20B in US goods, including steel, cheese, and seafood (see official list). The tariffs take effect Sept. 8, straining one of the world's largest trading relationships, with more than $2B in goods crossing the US-Canada border daily.

The move comes after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20B in Canadian imports Saturday, following failed trade talks. Negotiators reportedly clashed over US tariffs on Canadian automobiles and Washington’s demands to review Canada's trade deals with other countries, among other items. A prolonged dispute could raise costs for Americans, but experts say Canada is likely to feel a greater impact given that its economy is roughly one-twelfth the size of the US economy. Canadian officials have announced several measures to support domestic industries, including interest-free loans.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said yesterday he was considering renaming Lake Ontario, one of the five official Great Lakes, “Lake America.” See map here.
