Members phkrause Posted August 5, 2025 Author Members Posted August 5, 2025 ? Good morning! Docuseries lovers, rejoice: "Any Given Saturday" (SEC college football) just hit Netflix, and "Hard Knocks" (Bills) premieres tonight on HBO. In today's edition: Introducing guillotine leagues, Texas tops Coaches Poll, oddsmakers rank NFL QBs, 40 Schwarbombs, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports… ? ICYMI headlineS ? Coaches Poll: Texas, Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia and Notre Dame are the top five teams in the preseason college football Coaches Poll. As a reminder: The Longhorns and Buckeyes meet in Week 1. ⛳️ Nelly's reign ends: Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul has climbed past Nelly Korda to become the world's No. 1 women’s golfer, ending Korda's 71-week reign at the top. ? Staying at 68 (for now): The NCAA voted not to expand March Madness for next season, but will continue to discuss increasing the field to 72 or 76 teams in the future. ⚾️ Judge is back: Aaron Judge (elbow) returns to the lineup tonight after missing 10 games, and boy could the struggling Yankees (four straight losses) use him. ? Fox extension: The Spurs signed De'Aaron Fox to a four-year, $229 million max extension, keeping the former All-NBA guard in San Antonio through 2030. ? YAHOO FANTASY INTRODUCING GUILLOTINE LEAGUES Big news from HQ: We've added guillotine leagues to Yahoo Fantasy, offering you and your friends a whole new way to play this upcoming football season. How it works: Guillotine-style leagues offer a different approach by removing the head-to-head matchups and replacing them with a weekly battle royale between all managers, where the team with the lowest total score for that week is eliminated. To make things even more interesting, the entire roster of players from the team that gets knocked out goes to the waiver wire — where everyone will have a chance to bid on them. That process continues week after week until one team is left standing and that lone surviving manager is crowned the winner. To put it simply, guillotine combines the best parts of fantasy drafting and waiver wire adds, with an undeniable urgency to survive every single week. Instead of trying to win against one opponent, your goal is to avoid being the worst team in the league each week in order to escape elimination. As long as you're not at the very bottom, you keep playing. ? ODDSMAKERS RANKED: NFL QBS AGAINST THE SPREAD (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports) How valuable is each NFL QB against the spread? It's an important question for bettors (and bookmakers) to answer, so that when a QB is injured, they have a sense of how much the line should change. Yahoo Sports' Ben Fawkes asked 12 oddsmakers for the difference in the point spread if the starting QB and backup (both healthy) were playing at home against a league-average team. He then took all 12 different ATS values, averaged them together and ranked the starting QBs. Top 10: Josh Allen (6.98 points ATS) Patrick Mahomes (6.94) Lamar Jackson (6.65) Jalen Hurts (6.31) Joe Burrow (5.60) Justin Herbert (5.15) Dak Prescott (5.10) Jared Goff (5.06) Jayden Daniels (4.98) C.J. Stroud (4.90) ? THROUGH THE LENS IN PHOTOS: U.S. NATIONALS Kenny Bednarek did not take kindly to Noah Lyles looking back at him as they crossed the finish line. (Patrick Smith/Getty Images) We're still thinking about Cooper Lutkenhaus' historic race in the 800m final at the USATF Outdoor Championships, but that was hardly the only highlight from the weekend in Eugene. Here are a few more. Noah Lyles came roaring back to beat Kenny Bednarek for his record-tying fifth U.S. men's 200m title, and the two got into a bit of a tiff after Lyles' stare-down led to a post-race shove from Bednarek. Everyone's chasing Sydney. (Christian Petersen/Getty Images) Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the 400m hurdles world record holder, is switching her focus this season to the flat 400. So far, so good, as she dominated the final with a time that was just 0.2 seconds shy of the American record. (Patrick Smith/Getty Images) Remember Cole Hocker, who won 1500m gold in Paris with a kick for the ages? Well, he did it again, passing six guys in the final 200 meters to win an epic 5000m final. (Christian Petersen/Getty Images) Get to know the name Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. The South Carolina native, who won two medals last summer in Paris, just became the first woman since 2003 to pull off the 100m/200m double at nationals. ? ESPN buys NFL Network Illustration: Shoshana Gordon/Axios Disney's ESPN will acquire the National Football League's NFL Network in exchange for the league taking a 10% equity stake in ESPN, Axios Media Trends author Sara Fischer writes. Why it matters: The landmark deal brings the country's biggest sports league even closer to the preeminent sports network as streaming upends live TV. The agreement allows ESPN to fully own and operate the NFL Network, and integrate it into ESPN's upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming network that's set to debut this fall. NFL's Redzone linear channel will join Disney's portfolio of TV networks, giving ESPN broad rights to distribute the NFL RedZone Channel to pay TV operators for continued inclusion into their sports packages. ESPN Fantasy will be combined with NFL Fantasy. The NFL will continue to own and operate some of its media properties, including NFL Films, NFL+, NFL.com, the NFL Podcast Network, the NFL FAST Channel and the official sites for the league's 32 clubs. Members phkrause Posted August 6, 2025 Author Members Posted August 6, 2025 ? Good morning! Got a short and sweet edition for you today. Programming note: We'll be off for the rest of the week, but will see you back here on Monday morning. In today's edition: The NFLPA's month to forget, KC and Utah's shared NWSL history, Canadian tennis phenom, home run history, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports… ? UNION IN CRISIS THE NFLPA'S NO GOOD, VERY BAD MONTH Howell speaks to the media ahead of this year's Super Bowl. (Sean Gardner/Getty Images) The NFLPA, which hired former Screen Actors Guild chief negotiator David White as its interim executive director, hopes to begin the process of moving forward and regaining trust from the players in the wake of a disastrous month. But what got them here in the first place? Timeline: A series of recent reports, mostly centered on now-former NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell, unearthed what ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. and Kalyn Kahler called "the worst crisis in the NFLPA's 68-year history." June 24: A bombshell report from journalists Pablo Torre and Mike Florio finds that the NFL and NFLPA agreed to bury a collusion grievance ruling from January that detailed how all 32 teams — backed by commissioner Roger Goodell — were encouraged to suppress guaranteed money in player contracts. July 10: Things go from bad to worse when ESPN reports that Howell had been working as a consultant for one of the private equity firms that is actively seeking to invest in minority stakes of NFL teams — a blatant conflict of interest. July 13: NFLPA leadership backs Howell amid calls for his resignation. July 17: Howell announces his resignation not long after it's reported that he'd been accused of sexual discrimination in 2011 as a senior executive at Booz Allen. It's also reported that the NFL and NFLPA had buried yet another grievance ruling from earlier this year. July 18: The hits keep coming, as ESPN reports that Howell's decision to resign stemmed from an investigator discovering that he had charged the NFLPA over $3,000 for two separate strip club visits with union employees. July 20: NFLPA chief strategy officer J.C. Tretter, who'd been integral in hiring Howell and was at the center of the aforementioned second buried grievance, announces his resignation. What's next: Following White's election on Sunday as Howell's interim replacement, NFLPA president Jalen Reeves-Maybin said a "thorough search process for a permanent executive director" will begin soon. The question is whether this union has learned from the mistakes that got them here. ⚽️ NWSL SHARED HISTORY, DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS Sentnor takes a free kick during a game in June. (Dylan Buell/NWSL via Getty Images) The Kansas City Current, already the NWSL's best team, just got better. For that, they can thank the Utah Royals — a club whose history is inextricably woven into KC's, but whose franchise trajectory couldn't differ more. Sentnor on the move: The Current acquired 21-year-old forward Ally Sentnor from the Royals last week for an intraleague record $600,000 transfer, bringing in last year's No. 1 pick to bolster their roster for the second half of the season and continue their rise up the NWSL's ranks. KC, which finished as the runner-up in 2022 and reached the semis last year, sits comfortably in first this season. They also made history last spring when they opened the world's first stadium built for a women's professional team, and on Monday they became the first NWSL club to launch a fully formed developmental team. Utah, on the other hand, is going in the exact opposite direction. Last year, the expansion team fired its coach halfway through the season, and now they're in dead last with just 12 goals scored in 14 games. And to think, these polar opposite clubs basically stemmed from the same source. Shared history: When NWSL founding member FC Kansas City folded in 2017, their players were transferred to an expansion team called… the Utah Royals. But three years later, following reports of a toxic and sexist workplace environment, the Royals were sold to a Kansas City-based ownership group who moved the team and renamed them the Current. Last year, Real Salt Lake's owners launched an NWSL expansion team, bringing the Royals back to Utah. What to watch: Their paths will cross again this Friday when Utah hosts KC in a game that could get pretty ugly, as no team this season has scored more goals than the Current nor allowed more than the Royals. ? Ohio regulators crack down: As the gambling investigation into Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz continues, Ohio regulators are drafting a rule to ban the types of micro-bets that raised suspicions in the first place. ? RISING STAR TENNIS' NEXT BIG THING IS HERE Mboko reacts after winning the title in Montreal. (Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images) Victoria Mboko began the year as an unheralded teenager in tennis' minor leagues. But after making history last week in Montreal and climbing into the top 25 of the world rankings, it's safe to say people won't soon forget her name. Hometown hero: The 18-year-old Canadian beat Naomi Osaka in the final of the Canadian Open on Thursday to earn her first tour-level title, stunning the field after entering the WTA 1000 event as a wild card and navigating a gauntlet of stars to hoist the trophy. Osaka was the fourth former Grand Slam champion Mboko beat in Montreal, making her the second-youngest woman to oust four major champions at a single event in the Open Era (since 1968). The only one younger? Serena Williams, who did so at the 1999 U.S. Open en route to her first of 23 Grand Slam titles. Decent company. Worth a watch: When news of Mboko's victory reached the crowd at the men's final,* which was held in her hometown of Toronto, play was momentarily halted to allow for the chorus of cheers. Spectators hold up signs reading "Allez Vicky!" ("Go Vicky!") before her final. (Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images) Meteoric rise: Winning is nothing new for Mboko, who's put together a 53-9 record this year. But winning at this level is pretty remarkable considering where she was just a few months ago. The youngster began the year ranked 333rd in the world while playing on the ITF World Tennis Tour, a full two rungs below the WTA, where her prize money topped out at four figures even for winning championships. But she won 22 straight matches there to vault into the top 200 and earn her way into some higher-tier events. She won two matches at the French Open in her Grand Slam debut, followed that up with an opening-round win at Wimbledon to break into the top 100, and entered the Canadian Open at No. 85. Seven wins later, she sits at No. 24 with $1.2 million in career earnings, most of which came from her victory in Montreal ($752K). What's next: Mboko withdrew from this week's Cincinnati Open to rest up after injuring her wrist last week, meaning the next time we'll see her is at the U.S. Open, which she'll enter as a seeded player. And after spending the past couple weeks mowing down the major champions in her path, she'll be out to prove that she's ready to become one herself. Further reading: Victoria Mboko is here to break brains (Owen Lewis, Defector) *Men's final: American Ben Shelton defeated Karen Khachanov to win his third ATP title, and first at the Masters 1000 level, climbing to a career-best ranking of No. 6. ? Poston, Jhonattan Vegas, Bud Cauley and Kurt Kitayama moved into the top 50 of the FedEx Cup playoffs to earn a spot in this week's BMW Championship, while Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark, Jake Knapp, Min Woo Lee and Aldrich Potgieter fell out. Looking ahead: The Mariners announced they'll be unveiling a statue of Ichiro outside their ballpark next season, when they also plan to retire Randy Johnson's jersey — which happens to be the same No. 51 worn by Ichiro. ROOKIE REPORT NFL PRESEASON: WEEK 1 ROUNDUP Cam Ward warms up prior to his preseason debut. (Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images) The NFL preseason kicked off in earnest this weekend with all 32 teams taking the field, giving us our first glimpse of the rookies who dominated the offseason news cycle. Newcomers impress: From No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward to draft day enigma Shedeur Sanders, fans in Tennessee, Cleveland, Jacksonville and New York had to be pleased with what they saw. Cam Ward: The Titans, which won just three games last year, won't surprise anyone this season. But Ward's solid debut, particularly the chemistry he showed with veteran receiver Calvin Ridley, indicates better times should be on the horizon. Shedeur Sanders: He slid to the fifth round and finds himself in a crowded QB room in Cleveland, but after going 14/23 with 138 yards and 2 TD in three quarters against the Panthers, he's proven himself to be much more than mere headline fodder. Travis Hunter: The two-way experiment has officially begun, with the Heisman winner catching both of his targets as a starting receiver and playing eight snaps as the second-team cornerback. Jaxson Dart: Russell Wilson is expected to be QB1 in New York, but rookie first-rounder Dart led all Giants QBs against the Bills with 12 completions for 154 yards, including this gorgeous touchdown. Plus… J.J. McCarthy isn't a rookie, but Minnesota's 2024 first-rounder had a solid if unspectacular outing in his first game action since sustaining a season-ending knee injury in last year's preseason. Justin Tucker holds the NFL record, hitting a 66-yarder for the Ravens back in 2021. ? 59 minutes Jannik Sinner won his opener at the Cincinnati Open on Saturday in just 59 minutes, the fastest victory of his career. After going 55-3 (94.8%) on hard courts last year for the third-best win rate ever on the surface, he's off to a 38-2 start this year (95%). ? 3 straight triple-doubles Mercury star Alyssa Thomas became the first player in WNBA history to record a triple-double in three consecutive games, further solidifying her title as the triple-double queen. With 19 in her career, she has nearly five times as many as anyone else (Sabrina Ionescu, 4). ⚾️ BIG DUMPER MLB TRIVIA (Alika Jenner/Getty Images) Cal Raleigh hit his 45th HR of the season on Sunday, tied for the second-most ever by a catcher in a single season. The Longhorns edged Penn State by just five points in the 89-year-old poll of writers and broadcasters who cover college football, AP's Eric Olson writes. Members phkrause Posted August 13, 2025 Author Members Posted August 13, 2025 ? Good morning! The Brewers have won 10 straight and 25 of their last 29. It's been a magical summer in Milwaukee; we'll dive deeper tomorrow. Editor's Note: Kendall is off this week, so I (Jeff) will be your captain. In today's edition: Texas tops the preseason poll, the streaming wars heat up, going streaking, 44 hours in Bethpage, welcome back Breggy, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports… ? TOP 25 TEXAS TOPS PRESEASON POLL (Dillon Minshall/Yahoo Sports) The preseason AP top 25 was revealed on Monday, and for the first time in program history Texas will enter the season as the No. 1 team in the nation. The Longhorns (25 first-place votes) just barely edged out No. 2 Penn State (23) for the top spot, making this the closest preseason vote since 1998. The other first-place votes went to No. 3 Ohio State (11), No. 4 Clemson (4), No. 5 Georgia (1) and No. 7 Oregon (1). Conference call: Texas leads a historically strong SEC, which placed a record 10 teams in the preseason top 25, including four in the top 10. The Big Ten has six ranked teams, the Big 12 has four and the ACC has three, while No. 25 Boise State is the lone Mountain West team and No. 6 Notre Dame is the only independent. Looking ahead: The season kicks off in just 11 short days with No. 17 Kansas State vs. No. 22 Iowa State in Dublin, Ireland — the first ranked matchup in Week 0 since 2002. Then comes Week 1, with a full slate that includes three tantalizing top-10 matchups: No. 1 Texas at No. 3 Ohio State (Aug. 30) No. 9 LSU at No. 4 Clemson (Aug. 30) No. 6 Notre Dame at No. 10 Miami (Aug. 31) Further reading: Everything you need to know for the upcoming season (Yahoo Sports staff) ? BLOCKBUSTER DEAL THE STREAMING WARS HEAT UP (Stefan Milic/Yahoo Sports) UFC fans, rejoice. Beginning next year, all you'll need to watch the Ultimate Fighting Championship's full slate of events is a subscription to Paramount+, which has suddenly taken a big leap forward in the streaming wars. Blockbuster deal: Paramount and the UFC agreed to a massive seven-year, $7.7 billion deal on Monday for the exclusive U.S. rights to the world's largest MMA promotion, bringing an end to the league's pay-per-view era. All 43 of the UFC's annual cards (30 "Fight Nights" and 13 marquee numbered events) will stream on Paramount+ at no extra cost to subscribers, with select events also airing on CBS. At an average of $1.1 billion annually, this doubles the value of the UFC's current expiring deal with ESPN, which has streamed fights on ESPN+ since 2019 for a pay-per-view fee of $79.99 (plus the monthly subscription). Streaming wars heat up: This deal is of course a huge boon for the UFC, which can turn casual fans into diehards now that the price is dropping from $80 a fight to as little as $8 a month. But that pales in comparison to what it does for Paramount in the ever-intensifying streaming wars. Live sports are arguably the most critical asset for streamers hoping to fend off the competition in a fractured space, both attracting new subscribers and limiting churn. Adding the UFC's year-long programming to its arsenal is clearly a big win for Paramount, especially since it was taken directly from ESPN. But it's not as if the Worldwide Leader is just sitting on its hands. Just last week, ESPN acquired the rights to the WWE's biggest live events in a five-year, $1.6 billion deal with TKO — the parent company of both the WWE and UFC. But that's not all they did. ESPN also announced on Monday that its new streaming service will be offered in a bundle with Fox's new service, both of which launch next week. That timing is hardly a coincidence considering ESPN and Fox combined for 84% of the Nielsen-measured college football audience last year, and the season starts next week. Let the games begin. Bottom line: The protracted streaming wars can't go on forever, and could ultimately be determined by which services have the biggest and most attractive war chest of sports offerings. To that end, Paramount and Disney (ESPN) are both well positioned moving forward. ? GOING STREAKING BY THE NUMBERS Scheffler tees off during Sunday's final round. (Ben Jared/PGA TOUR via Getty Images) The "By the numbers" section isn't usually reserved only for streaks, but sometimes that's just what the sports world provides, so we're going with it. ⛳️ 12 straight Lost in the excitement of Sunday's thrilling finish at the St. Jude Championship was the fact that Scottie Scheffler was yet again in contention, finishing just one stroke out of the playoff. That T3 was his 12th straight top-eight finish, the longest such streak on the PGA Tour since 1952 (Tom Weiskopf). ? 16 straight Aryna Sabalenka has won a mind-boggling 16 straight tiebreakers dating back to February, with the last two coming in Monday's three-set victory over Emma Raducanu at the Cincinnati Open. She's won 18 tiebreakers overall in 2025, the most by a woman in a single year in the Open Era. ? 3 straight Spain's Álex Palou clinched his third straight IndyCar championship on Sunday, becoming just the fourth IndyCar driver to win three consecutive season-long crowns. It was also his fourth title overall, tied for the third-most ever behind A.J. Foyt (7) and Scott Dixon (6). ⚾️ 23 straight Casual fans might not know the name Bryan Woo, but they probably should. The Mariners righty, an All-Star this year, is now the first pitcher since Clayton Kershaw in 2019 to start a season with 23 consecutive starts of 6+ innings pitched. He's also got the eighth-best ERA in the AL (3.08) and the third-best WHIP (0.95). ⛳️ GOOD READ 44 HOURS IN BETHPAGE The Ryder Cup trophy next to the caution sign that greets golfers at Bethpage Black, pictured here in 2022. (Gary Kellner/PGA of America via Getty Images) It's never easy to secure a tee time at Bethpage Black. But with the iconic course in New York soon closing to the public entirely so it can make final preparations before hosting next month's Ryder Cup, it's become nearly impossible — unless you're willing to wait a while. From The Washington Post's Rick Maese: Adam Farrell and his friends began mapping out their dream golf trip months ago — driving routes, flight times, all the necessary provisions. It was a logistical puzzle, for sure, but if everything fell into place, they knew they would find themselves on the first tee of the acclaimed Bethpage Black course just a few weeks before the best golfers on the planet teed off there. Bethpage, which has hosted two U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship, is unique among the country's elite golf venues in that it is a true public course: open to anyone and relatively affordable. The longtime friends knew that even with golf's next mega-event — the Ryder Cup — descending on Long Island in September, mortals such as them could get on if they arrived early enough and waited their turn. There was no way to know, however, that their wait would amount to 44½ hours in a parking lot, that they would have to spend two nights sleeping in a car or that they would find themselves immersed in a pop-up community of like-minded golf nuts eager to play the Ryder Cup course — and that when it was all over, they would do it again in a heartbeat. ? Last night, Shohei Ohtani lined into a triple play against his former team, and tonight he pitches against them for the first time. Quite a week for the Freeway Series. Editor's Note: Kendall is off this week, so I (Jeff) will be your captain. As always, feel free to shoot me an email with any feedback. In today's edition: The Brewers may never lose again, Mondo breaks another world record, the Mets' new home run king, 10 days 'til kickoff, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports… ⚾️ BREW CREW MILWAUKEE'S MAGICAL SUMMER (Joseph Raines/Yahoo Sports) I don't think anyone is sleeping on the Brewers, who lead the majors with a 75-44 record and have won 11 straight after routing the Pirates, 14-0, on Tuesday. But it's still worth diving into Milwaukee's magical summer, particularly considering it followed such a lackluster spring. Going streaking: The Brewers have gone a ridiculous 26-4 since July 6, and they're now just the third team with multiple 11-game win streaks in a season in the last 90 years. But their turnaround from also-ran to juggernaut actually began six weeks earlier. On May 24, after losing for the 10th time in 16 games, the Brewers were a measly 25-28 — the fifth-worst record in the NL and just a half-game ahead of the lowly Nationals. Since then, they've gone 50-16 — a remarkable 123-win pace over nearly half the season. And they've done it with a bottom-10 payroll, too. Consider this: Since Milwaukee's surge began in late May, the Cubs have the second-best record in the NL. Yet somehow Chicago has lost 14 games in the standings to the Brewers since then. A true buzzsaw. How have they done this? Unsurprisingly, Milwaukee has the best ERA in MLB and best OPS in the NL since that late-May turnaround. But what is surprising is the players that have fueled their run as guys like Jackson Chourio, Rhys Hoskins and Jacob Misiorowski have landed on the IL. Andrew Vaughn, the No. 3 pick in the 2019 draft, was so bad this year that the White Sox of all teams demoted him to Triple-A. But since being traded to Milwaukee he's been one of the league's best hitters, smacking 8 HR and 32 RBI in 27 games with the Brewers. Isaac Collins is a 28-year-old rookie, which isn't usually a good thing. But the ninth-rounder from 2019 also leads all NL rookies in fWAR, was just named NL player of the week and is now the betting favorite to win ROY. Quinn Priester pitched to a bloated 6.23 ERA in his first two big league seasons before landing in Milwaukee this spring; now he's 11-2 with a 3.49 ERA. I could go on, but you get the point. To put it another way: They've done this by playing Brewer baseball. They aren't going to out-slug the competition (Christian Yelich, having an above average but unspectacular season, leads the team with 23 HR), but they'll outwork and outhustle anyone. As reigning NL manager of the year Pat Murphy eloquently put it, "We have to do what we have to do to be who we are." Amen. Looking ahead: The last time the Brewers had the best record in baseball this late in the season was 1982, when they reached their first and only World Series. If Milwaukee's magical summer carries over to the fall, you'd be wise not to bet against history repeating itself. ? SNAPSHOTS THROUGH THE LENS (Attila Kisbenedek/AFP via Getty Images) Budapest — Mondo Duplantis has done it again. The American-born Swede broke the pole vault world record for the 13th time in his career on Tuesday, clearing 6.29 meters at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Lucrative gig: As a reminder, Mondo earns $100,000 every time he breaks a world record. And to maximize his earnings, he purposely breaks it by only one centimeter at a time. 4D chess. (Dustin Satloff/Getty Images) New York — What long seemed inevitable became official on Tuesday when Pete Alonso hit his 253rd career home run to pass Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets franchise history. And three innings later, the Polar Bear belted his 254th for good measure. Fireworks outage: The Mets hit so many home runs (six) in their 13-5 win over the Braves that Citi Field ran out of their celebratory fireworks. Quite the way to snap a seven-game losing streak. (Dylan Buell/Getty Images) Cincinnati — Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Hamad Medjedovic on Tuesday at the Cincinnati Open for his 50th win of the year, becoming the first ATP player to win 50 matches in four consecutive seasons since Novak Djokovic in 2016. Long way to go: As impressive as Carlito's streak is, he's less than halfway to matching Djokovic, who won 50+ matches every year from 2007-16. ? Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports… ? GAMES EVERY NIGHT NBA SCHEDULE RELEASE (Stefan Milic/Yahoo Sports) The NBA released its full schedule for the upcoming season on Thursday, and it's no surprise which teams you'll be seeing most often when you turn on your TV. The defending champion Thunder have 34 games on national TV (or streaming), tied with the Lakers, Warriors and Knicks for the most in the league. The Timberwolves and Rockets aren't too far behind, at 28 each, followed by the Nuggets (26), Celtics (25), Cavaliers (24) and Mavericks (23) to round out the top 10. No love for Indy: The Pacers, a year after reaching the NBA Finals, have just nine national games. Rude. (I know, I know… Tyrese Haliburton is out for the year. Still.) (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports) How to watch: The biggest change this season is that the league's massive new 11-year, $76 billion media deal kicks in, which could take some getting used to for fans conditioned to watching mostly on ESPN and TNT. Here's where you'll watch: NBC/Peacock: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday … The NBA returns to NBC for the first time in 24 years. Most importantly, that means "Roundball Rock" is returning! ESPN/ABC: Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday … No change here. ESPN still gets Wednesday and Friday nights, while ABC gets Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. Prime: Thursday, Friday and Saturday … Doubleheaders on Friday all season and on Thursday starting in January, plus select Saturday afternoon games. Big picture: Yes, that's a lot of different places to watch one league. But the biggest takeaway is this: Almost all season long, there'll be at least one nationally-televised (or streamed) game every. single. day. Let the countdown begin: The season opens with an NBC doubleheader on Oct. 21, when the Thunder host the Rockets in Kevin Durant's Houston debut and the Lakers host the Warriors in the latest chapter of LeBron vs. Steph. BEST OF THE BEST WNBA AWARDS WATCH (Hassan Ahmad/Yahoo Sports) With one month until the playoffs begin, here are our picks for the WNBA's three major end-of-season awards, courtesy of Yahoo Sports' Maggie Hendricks. MVP Napheesa Collier, Lynx: Yes, she's missing some time right now with a sprained ankle; no, that shouldn't penalize her considering how fully she and her team dominated before the injury. Minnesota (27-5) has already clinched the playoffs and Collier leads the league in scoring with 23.5 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.6 blocks. Contender and dark horse: Dream guard Allisha Gray is averaging career-highs in points (19.0), rebounds (5.6) and assists (3.8); Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu is top five in scoring (19.3) and top 10 in assists (5.4). Defensive Player of the Year A'ja Wilson, Aces: The three-time MVP may yet find herself in that race, too. But the two-time DPOY is already running away with this one as she leads the league in blocks (2.1), is second in rebounds (9.8) and seventh in steals (1.7). And, lest we forget, she trails only Collier in scoring (22.0). Contender and dark horse: The Mercury's triple-double queen, Alyssa Thomas, is third in rebounding (8.7) while playing suffocating defense; Storm forward Gabby Williams leads the league in steals by a wide margin (2.5). Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers, Wings: The UConn legend is seventh in scoring (18.4), eighth in assists (5.4) and fourth in steals (1.8). That's not just among rookies, but across the entire league. Safe to say she's met her sky-high expectations. Contender and dark horse: The Mystics duo of Kiki Iriafen (12.5 pts, 8.3 reb) and Sonia Citron (14.8 pts, 4.5 reb) — both of whom, like Bueckers, were All-Stars this year — have Washington on the fringes of the playoff race. ? IT'S BURGER TIME THE WIN STREAK THAT'S FEEDING A CITY (George Webb Restaurants) Nothing brings a city together quite like a team on a hot streak. Add in some free food, and it's fair to say the vibes in Milwaukee have never been higher. Free burgers: The Brewers' 12th consecutive win on Wednesday triggered a free hamburger promotion from local restaurant chain George Webb for just the third time in nearly 80 years. Webb, who opened his first lunch counter in 1948, promised to give away free burgers if the Milwaukee Brewers — then a Triple-A team — won 17 straight games. When MLB's Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953, he reduced the requisite streak to 12. The Braves came and went without hitting the mark, but the Brewers — an expansion team that played one year as the Seattle Pilots before moving to Milwaukee in 1970 — did so in 1987 and 2018, earning fans more than 300,000 free burgers. This coming Wednesday it's all happening again, as fans will have four hours to claim their free sandwich at any of the 23 locations across Wisconsin. Or, for those who can't make giveaway day, vouchers will be available for pickup starting today. The last word: "I was nervous," said Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff, who got the nod with the streak on the line. "There was a little bit more at stake today. I wanted to win those burgers bad. Who doesn't want a free burger?" Who indeed, Brandon. Who indeed. Editor's Note: Kendall is off this week, so I (Jeff) will be your captain. As always, feel free to shoot me an email with any feedback. In today's edition: MLB power rankings, PSG wins another trophy, Ohtani vs. the Angels, NFL valuations, Georgia's $62 million high school stadium, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports… ? ICYMI headlineS ⚾️ 12 straight: The Brewers have won 12 straight games for just the third time in franchise history, outscoring their opponents 103-39 in that time. They are 32 games over .500. They have six more wins than anyone else. They are, quite simply, the best team in baseball. ? Cook gets paid: The Bills signed James Cook to a four-year, $48 million extension that includes $30 million guaranteed, ending the two-time Pro Bowler's "hold-in." ? Venus returns to the Open: Venus Williams, 45, will play in the U.S. Open as a wild card, making her the oldest singles player at the event since 47-year-old Renée Richards in 1981. ? Trail Blazers sold: Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has reportedly reached an agreement to buy the Trail Blazers from the estate of the late Paul Allen for more than $4 billion. ? Training camp news: Micah Parsons and the Cowboys are no closer to reaching a deal; Shedeur Sanders is day-to-day with an oblique injury; the Lions embarrassed the Dolphins in a scrimmage; Michael Penix Jr. was involved in a scuffle with the Titans during a joint practice. ⚾️ STRETCH RUN MLB POWER RANKINGS Standings as of Wednesday. (Mallory Bielecki/Yahoo Sports) We've reached the MLB season's three-quarter mark, and with seven weeks left until the playoffs our latest power rankings more closely resemble what the postseason field will actually look like. But the teams that eventually make it to October still have some work to do before they get there. With that in mind… Here is one realistic goal that each of our top 10 teams should pursue from now until the end of the regular season, courtesy of Yahoo Sports' Jordan Shusterman. Brewers — Secure the best record in baseball: This, of course, should be the bare minimum expectation given Milwaukee's magical summer. More important is finding their way back to the NLCS or beyond for the first time since 2018. Phillies — Enter October with momentum: Since reaching the World Series in 2022, Philly's season has ended one round earlier each successive year. They've got the roster to reverse that trend; now they just need to go out and do it. Dodgers — Figure out who their 13 best pitchers are: On paper, this pitching staff is as loaded as it gets. But sifting through injuries and inconsistency to find the right mix of arms will be of paramount importance as they seek to repeat as champions. Blue Jays — Win the AL East for the first time in a decade: They've come a long way since last year's last-place finish and this spring's contract talks with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now all that's left is to secure what should be a raucous home-field advantage north of the border. Cubs — Restore juggernaut status as an offense: The North Siders' success in October will hinge on whether or not they can find the offensive firepower that carried them in the first few months of the season. Tigers — Secure a top-two seed in the AL: Despite recent stumbles, Detroit still figures to win its first division crown since 2014. But this is a team that would seriously benefit from earning a bye to ensure its top arms are rested and ready to roll. Astros — Reclaim full-blown villain status: The laundry list of injuries, most recently to closer Josh Hader, can't be overlooked. But with Carlos Correa back in the fold they look far more intimidating and far more familiar as the league's ultimate heel. Padres — Chase down the Dodgers: It's been almost 20 years since their last division title, but here they are on the doorstep of finally slaying the "dragon up the freeway," holding sole possession of first place after winning their fifth straight game on Wednesday. Mariners — Win the AL West for the first time since 2001: After winning an MLB record-tying 116 games, they vanished from the postseason for two decades. Now, just one game behind the Astros, is this the year they finally reclaim the crown? Red Sox — Finish ahead of the Yankees and make the playoffs: Missing the playoffs would make this the first time since the 90's that Boston failed to reach October in four consecutive seasons. For a team that spends this much money, that's simply inexcusable. ? SNAPSHOTS THROUGH THE LENS (Riccardo De Luca/Anadolu via Getty Images) Udine, Italy — Paris Saint-Germain staged a thrilling comeback against Tottenham to win their first UEFA Super Cup, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to tie the game before finishing the job in penalties. Another trophy: PSG have won the Super Cup, Champions League, Coupe de France, Ligue 1 and Trophée des Champions this year, with their only blemish coming in last month's Club World Cup final loss to Chelsea. Ohtani pitches to Trout in a battle of former teammates. (Keith Birmingham, Orange County Register/ SCNG) Anaheim — Shohei Ohtani had his longest outing of the season (4.1 IP), struck out seven and tripled against his former team. But the Dodgers still fell to the Angels for their fourth straight loss, and for the first time since April 27 the defending champs are out of first place. Coming up: The Dodgers are off today, but this weekend they host a massive series against the Padres, who've taken advantage of their prolonged slide (10-14 since the break) to leapfrog them into first. Lightning strikes near the stadium on Tuesday. (Dylan Buell/Getty Images) Mason, Ohio — The weather has made for a challenging week at the Cincinnati Open, with multiple days delayed by storms and numerous players forced to retire due to extreme heat. But at least it gave us this gorgeous photo. (Fried Egg Golf) San Francisco — The Olympic Club is a seriously stunning setting for the U.S. Amateur (yes, that is the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance), which opened match play on Wednesday. Highlights include 16-year-old Miles Russell and John Daly II both advancing to the Round of 32. ??? NFL VALUATIONS: BUSINESS IS BOOMING (Lev Akabas/Sportico) The NFL long ago surpassed the imaginary threshold of being "too big to fail." Now it's just showing off. Business is booming: The average NFL team is worth $7.13 billion — a staggering sum and a 20% increase over last year according to Sportico's annual valuations, released on Wednesday. The Cowboys again lead the way at $12.8 billion. But after becoming the first team to cross the $10 billion threshold last year they're now joined by two others in the Rams ($10.43B) and Giants ($10.25B). 13 teams are worth at least $7 billion and even the last-place Bengals are worth $5.5 billion — more than every NHL team, all but four MLB teams and all but seven NBA teams. Big picture: If a 20% increase in a year sounds big (which it most certainly should), consider this: the average NFL franchise has more than doubled in value just since 2021. (Eben Novy-Williams/Sportico) The professional sports ecosystem: I know it's hard to read the table above — which features the rank-ordered valuations of all 154* teams across the "Big Five" leagues — but the colors alone tell the story as the NFL makes up almost the entire left-hand column (i.e. most valuable). ? NFL: $7.13 billion average ? ? NBA: $4.6 billion average ? ⚾️ MLB: $2.82 billion average ? ? NHL: $1.79 billion average ⚪️ ⚽️ MLS: $721 million average ? *Actually, 153: MLS expansion side San Diego FC is the only team missing from that table because they had not yet begun playing when Sportico last released their MLS valuations. ? Photo: Universal Pictures/Starz Advance tickets went on sale for a 40th anniversary showing of the coming-of-age classic "The Breakfast Club," returning for just two days, Sept. 7 and 10. Why it matters: "The Breakfast Club," which opened in 1985, "became a box office hit and cultural sensation after striking a generational chord with its portrayal of identity and the desire to be seen," says The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news. The 97-minute film — directed by John Hughes and set in suburban Chicago — stars Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy as five teenagers from vastly different cliques who spend a life-altering Saturday in detention in their high school library. "The Breakfast Club" launched the careers of its young ensemble cast and ushered in the Brat Pack era. Watch a 9-min. preview ... Read a 1985 review ... Get tickets here.
