Kimmel suggested Kirk’s killer came from the MAGA movement, though prosecutors later indicted a suspect whose views were described by family as politically left-leaning. Sinclair said the comments crossed its expected professional standards and called for Kimmel to directly apologize to Kirk’s family and contribute financially to both the family and Turning Point USA, the group Kirk founded. Sinclair also requested formal talks with ABC executives about ensuring accountability in network programming. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” averaged 1.77 million viewers and led the 18-49 demographic with 220,000 in the second quarter of 2025. Late-night ratings have declined overall, however, with similar shows trailing leading podcasts in younger audiences. Sinclair said it will run a televised tribute to Kirk tonight in the late-night slot. > American track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone wins 400-meter title at World Track and Field Championships, with fastest time in 40 years (More) | Team USA leads medal count; see complete results (More) > Police search home of singer D4vd after decomposed remains of missing 15-year-old girl found inside his vehicle last week (More) > WNBA playoffs round one wraps tonight; see updated bracket and schedule (More) | 14 former NC State athletes file lawsuit accusing the university's former director of sports medicine of sexual abuse (More) Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13
Members phkrause Posted September 20, 2025 Author Members Posted September 20, 2025 ? Yahoo! It's Friday! You made it. Stat of the day: The Bills beat the Dolphins, 31-21, on Thursday night to improve to 3-0 on the season and extend a truly remarkable streak: They've now won the turnover battle in 25 straight games, the longest such streak in NFL history. In today's edition: Kershaw's final season (Kopitar's too), Aces and Fever advance to semifinals, MLB playoff picture, fastest to 50 goals, Federer talks "Fedal Tour," and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ⚾️ ALL-TIME GREAT CLAYTON KERSHAW SAYS FAREWELL Clayton Kershaw speaks with the media on Thursday. (Ronald Martinez/Getty Images) After 18 seasons in Dodger Blue, Clayton Kershaw announced Thursday that he intends to retire at the end of the season. Tune in tonight: The future Hall of Famer will make his final regular-season start at Dodger Stadium tonight against the Giants (10:10pm ET, Apple TV+). By the numbers: Kershaw's career has been marked by consistent excellence, and the numbers speak for themselves. Three Cy Young Awards. One MVP. 10 All-Star teams. Five ERA titles. The 20th member of the illustrious 3,000-strikeout club. How's this for consistency? Kershaw recorded a sub-3.00 ERA in 13 of his 18 seasons, including three seasons with a sub-2.00 ERA. Even this season, at age 37, he's 10-2 with a 3.53 ERA. To sum up his greatness: Since the mound was lowered in 1969, no qualified MLB starter has a lower career ERA than Kershaw's 2.51. He is, quite simply, one of the best to ever do it. Wild stat: Over 1,000 pitchers in MLB history have made at least 150 career starts. Kershaw is the only one who was more likely to deliver a scoreless start (101) than he was to suffer a loss (96 as of now). The Dodgers drafted Kershaw with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft. (Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) He came to town as a quiet Texas kid charged with carrying Hollywood's team. For 18 years, in greatness and in grief, through sweet dreams and bitter despair, he did exactly that. He was splendid. He was awful. He set records. He ruined seasons. He was passionately embraced. He was loudly booed. For 18 years, Clayton Kershaw pitched through the gamut of emotions as both a hero and a villain, moments of euphoria addled with spells of despair, picturesque summers disappearing into the wicked wilds of October. But carry the Dodgers he did, with courage and dignity and grace, and in the end, he will be surrounded only by love, a deep and abiding roar of affection from a city to a simple man who willed himself into legend. Embrace debate: Is Kershaw the greatest Dodger ever? The answer to that question depends on how you define greatness. Other candidates would have to include Sandy Koufax and Jackie Robinson. Heck, if we're being honest, the real "Dodgers G.O.A.T" is probably Vin Scully. From the archives: Clayton Kershaw's Great Expectations (May 2008) ...17 years ago, Yahoo Sports reporter Jeff Passan, now with ESPN, went to Mobile, Alabama, to meet a 20-year-old southpaw who everyone said was going to be the next great pitcher. Turns out, everyone was right. ? SNAPSHOTS THE WORLD IN PHOTOS (John Locher/AP Photo) ?? Las Vegas — A'ja Wilson tied a playoff career high with 38 points, Jackie Young had a go-ahead putback with 12.4 seconds left and the Aces beat the Storm, 74-73, to advance to the WNBA semifinals. Tokyo, Japan — Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won the world title in the women's 400 meters with a jaw-dropping time of 47.78 seconds, which is the second-fastest ever and just 0.18 off the controversial world record that has stood since 1985. Consider this: Before Thursday, no woman had come within a half second of the 47.60 seconds that East Germany's Marita Koch ran 40 years ago. As recently as 2019, no one had even come within a full second. (Molly Darlington/Copa/Getty Images) ??????? Manchester, England — Erling Haaland scored his 50th Champions League goal in Manchester City's 2-0 win over Napoli. He only needed 49 games to reach that mark, by far the fewest of any player. Fewest games to reach 50 Champions League goals: Haaland (49), Ruud van Nistelrooy (62), Lionel Messi (66), Robert Lewandowski (77), Kylian Mbappé (79). ⚾️ 10 DAYS LEFT MLB PLAYOFF PUSH: RACES TO WATCH (Grant Thomas/Yahoo Sports) As the penultimate weekend of MLB's regular season gets underway, all eyes will be on Houston, where the Mariners and Astros play a three-game series that could determine the AL West. Ending the drought? Houston (84-69) and Seattle (84-69) are deadlocked with 10 days left in the regular season. If the Mariners win this weekend's series, they'll be in the driver's seat to claim their first division title since 2001, Ichiro Suzuki's rookie year. Among teams that have won at least one division title,* only the Pirates (32 years) have a longer active drought than the Mariners (23). On the flip side is Houston, which has won the AL West in seven of the last eight years. Remaining schedules: After this weekend, the Mariners host the Rockies (3 games) and Dodgers (3 games), while the Astros travel out West to play the Athletics (3 games) and Angels (3 games). Other races to watch: AL East: The Blue Jays (89-64) hold a three-game lead over the Yankees (86-67), who are three games clear of the Red Sox (83-70). NL Central: The Tigers (85-68) hold a 3.5-game lead over the Guardians (81-71), who've won seven straight games and 12 of 13. NL West: The Dodgers (86-67) hold a three-game lead over the Padres (83-70), whose 18-year division title drought trails only the Pirates and Mariners. NL Wild Card: The Cubs (88-65) and Padres (83-70) are safe, while the third spot is down to the Mets (79-74), Diamondbacks (77-76), Reds (77-76) and Giants (76-77). AL Wild Card: Man is this one tight, with the eventual AL West loser right in the thick of it. The Yankees (86-67), Astros (84-69), Mariners (84-69), Red Sox (83-70), Guardians (81-71) and Rangers (79-74) are separated by seven games, with all three spots up for grabs. On the outside looking in… The Royals (76-77), Rays (75-78), Cardinals (74-79), Marlins (73-80) and Braves (70-83) are technically still alive, but there's virtually zero chance they make the postseason. Better luck next year… The Rockies (41-112), White Sox (57-96), Nationals (62-91), Pirates (65-88), Twins (66-86), Angels (69-84), Athletics (72-81) and Orioles (72-81) have been mathematically eliminated. *Odd men out: The Rockies and Marlins, both 1993 expansion teams, are the only active franchises who've never won a division title. ? (Clive Brunskill/Getty Images) During an interview with CNBC on Thursday, Roger Federer said he'd be open to starting a senior tour with Rafael Nadal. "Yeah, why not? I love Rafa. I played four hours of tennis the other day here in San Francisco … I've been playing a lot, trying to keep in good shape. And I know that Rafa is also totally open to maybe play some tennis. Seniors tennis sounds terrible to us, ya know, but maybe we can create a tour — like a 'Fedal Tour' or something. It'd be cool." "One of the reasons I started the Laver Cup was to shine a light on the past greats of the game. And maybe a seniors tour — we've had it a little bit in tennis, I think it was called the Champions Tour at the time — I think there is a lot of appetite for seeing past champions in tennis, so I could maybe look into that with Rafa for sure." In today's edition: NFL Sunday recap, Team World wins Laver Cup, A'ja wins fourth MVP, historic home runs, Dabo Swinney is down bad, Baker's Dozen, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ? ICYMI HEADLINES ⚾️ MLB playoff tracker: The Blue Jays became the first AL team to clinch a playoff spot, joining the Brewers, Phillies, Cubs and Dodgers. The Mets and Tigers, meanwhile, have suffered epic collapses that threaten to knock them out of the playoffs entirely. ? Four-time MVP: A'ja Wilson beat out Napheesa Collier to become the WNBA's first four-time MVP ('20, '22, '24, '25), breaking a tie with three-time winners Lisa Leslie ('01, '04, '06), Sheryl Swoopes ('00, '02, '05) and Lauren Jackson ('03, '07, '10). ? Week 4 AP Poll: Miami moved up two spots to No. 2 in this week's AP poll after beating unranked Florida; Indiana jumped 10 spots to No. 9 after their 63-10 rout of then-No. 9 Illinois; No. 12 Texas Tech has its highest ranking since 2013. ? Women's rugby stunner: Canada stunned six-time champion New Zealand to reach the Women's Rugby World Cup final, where they'll face host nation England. This was New Zealand's first World Cup loss in 11 years and their first loss in a knockout match in 34 years. ⚾️ History averted: The Rockies (43-113) are guaranteed to finish with a better record than last year's White Sox (41-121), thus avoiding the label of "worst team ever" (by win-loss record). ? WEEK 3 SUNDAY STORYLINES The Eagles have won the last 17 games that Jalen Hurts has started and finished. (Mitchell Leff/Getty Images) Game of the day: The Eagles erased a 19-point deficit to stun the Rams, 33-26, and improve to 3-0 on the season. Jordan Davis blocked a last-second field-goal attempt and returned it 66 yards for a TD to ice the game and complete Philly's biggest comeback ever at Lincoln Financial Field. Special teams in the spotlight: Sunday featured five blocked field goals (including two returned for TDs in the fourth quarter), which is tied for the most in a single week since at least 1991. There were also four game-winning field goals (Bucs, Browns, 49ers, Chargers) and two punt return TDs (Commanders, Seahawks). Home teams dominate: There's been much written in recent years about the death of home-field advantage in the NFL. That certainly wasn't the case on Sunday, when home teams went 11-3. New York is 0-6: For the third time in the last six seasons, the Jets and Giants are both 0-3. Meanwhile, ex-Giant Daniel Jones is playing like an MVP for the undefeated Colts and ex-Jet Aaron Rodgers has orchestrated two winning drives in his first three games as a Steeler. Hey, at least The Empire State can also claim the 3-0 Bills! (Mike Stewart/AP Photo) The Isaiah Rodgers game: The Vikings cornerback became the first player in NFL history with a pick 6, a fumble return for a TD and two forced fumbles in a single game… and he did it all in the first half. "I'm just happy to put on for my city and put on for the little guys out there like me who never thought they could make it this far in life," he said postgame. Backup QBs go 3-2: Carson Wentz (Vikings), Marcus Mariota (Commanders) and Mac Jones (49ers) led their teams to victory, while Tyrod Taylor (Jets) and Jake Browning (Bengals) suffered losses. Callahan on the hot seat: Titans head coach Brian Callahan was greeted by loud boos and "fire Callahan" chants during another sloppy loss — his 17th in 20 games at the helm. How long until Tennessee is forced to make a move? Houston, we have a problem: The Texans offense is horrible. How horrible? They're the only team in the last 20 seasons to start 0-3 despite allowing fewer than 55 points. ?? SNAPSHOTS PHOTOS ACROSS AMERICA Mitchell drives to the basket during Indiana's Game 1 victory. (David Becker/NBAE via Getty Images) Las Vegas — The Fever's surprising postseason run continued on Sunday, as they cruised past newly-minted MVP A'ja Wilson and the Aces, 89-73, in Game 1 of their best-of-five semifinals. Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with a playoff career-high 34 points. Meanwhile, in Minneapolis: The top-seeded Lynx overcame a halftime deficit to beat the fourth-seeded Mercury, 82-69, and take a 1-0 lead in the other semifinal. (Ronald Martinez/Getty Images) Los Angeles — Clayton Kershaw walked off the field at Dodger Stadium for the final time in his regular-season career on Friday, exiting to a chorus of cheers after, fittingly, striking out his final batter. "I can't even put into words how special this night was to me," he said after the game. Total domination: Kershaw will retire with a 2.26 ERA across 228 regular-season starts at Dodger Stadium — the third-lowest by a pitcher at a single ballpark in the Live Ball Era (since 1920, minimum 100 starts), trailing only Jacob deGrom (2.14, Citi Field) and Don Drysdale (2.19, Dodger Stadium). Team World takes a selfie. (Joe Scarnici/Getty Images) San Francisco — Team World took down Team Europe to win the Laver Cup and claim their third title in four years at the "Ryder Cup of Tennis." MVPs: American Taylor Fritz beat world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday and world No. 3 Alex Zverev on Sunday to seal the win for Team World; Australia's Alex de Minaur was the only player to go undefeated across multiple matches (3-0). (Matthew Stockman/Getty Images) Denver — Mike Trout demolished his 400th career home run on Saturday, becoming the 59th player in MLB history to reach that milestone. The fan who caught the historic blast received some signed bats in exchange for the ball, and had one more request: to play catch with Trout. More historic homers: Giancarlo Stanton became the 41st member of the 450-HR club; Cal Raleigh hit his 57th home run on Saturday to break Ken Griffey Jr.'s franchise record, then hit his 58th on Sunday. The AL record is within reach! ? SNAPSHOTS PHOTOS AROUND THE WORLD Anna Hall celebrates after winning the 800m in the heptathlon. (Emilee Chinn/Getty Images) ?? Tokyo, Japan — The U.S. ended the World Athletics Championships with a bang on Sunday, winning three of four relays to finish with a record 16 gold medals — two more than the previous record (USA in 2005, 2007 and 2019) and nine more than anyone else won this year (Kenya). Weekend highlights: Anna Hall became the first American woman to win heptathlon gold since Jackie Joyner-Kersee in 1993; Noah Lyles matched Usain Bolt's record with four straight 200m titles; Melissa Jefferson-Wooden became the fourth woman to win the 100m/200m sprint double. (Lintao Zhang/Getty Images) ?? Shenzhen, China — Italy won its second straight Billie Jean King Cup on Sunday, defeating the U.S. in the finals to become the first back-to-back champion in the Women's World Cup of Tennis since Czechia nearly a decade ago (2014-16). All-time leaderboard: Italy's sixth title broke a tie with Spain and Russia for the fourth-most ever, trailing only the U.S. (18), Czechia (11) and Australia (7). Ryan Gravenberch scores his team's first goal. (Liverpool FC via Getty Images) ??????? Liverpool, England — Liverpool remains perfect (5-0-0) after beating Everton, 2-1, in the Merseyside Derby, leaving Blues boss David Moyes winless in 21 games at Anfield. That's the most games any Premier League manager has coached at a single venue without winning. Other marquee matchups: Arsenal rescued a point at home with a stoppage time equalizer against Manchester City; Manchester United defeated Chelsea, 2-1, in a chaotic match at Old Trafford that saw the Blues' goalkeeper sent off just five minutes into the game. (Mark Thompson/Getty Images) ?? Baku, Azerbaijan — Max Verstappen dominated the Azerbaijan Grand Prix for his second consecutive win and sixth career Grand Slam (pole, fastest lap, leads every lap, wins race), tying Lewis Hamilton for the second-most in Formula 1 history. Chasing McLaren: Verstappen (255 points) is still in a relatively distant third place, but the four-time defending champion narrowed the gap on Sunday as Oscar Piastri (324) crashed out and Lando Norris (299) finished seventh in a rare non-podium finish for the McLaren duo. ? 1 WIN, 3 LOSSES DABO IS DOWN BAD (Jacob Kupferman/AP Photo) Clemson began the year as a popular pick to win the national championship. Instead, the Tigers (1-3) are off to their worst start in 21 years, and their season is effectively over following Saturday's disappointing 34-21 loss to Syracuse. From Yahoo Sports' Dan Wolken: Dabo Swinney, in a fit of delusion that has become all too frequent in recent years, basically dared Clemson to fire him earlier this week. "If Clemson's tired of winning, they can send me on my way," he said during a 14-minute rant. "I'll go somewhere else and coach. I ain't going to the beach. Hell, I'm 55. I got a long way to go." Clemson won't send Swinney anywhere, of course. Besides the irresponsible finances involved — Swinney's $60 million buyout stands as a monument to the kind of unnecessary coach worship that schools no longer need to do in this NIL-driven era — there isn't any scenario where a Clemson coaching search in 2025 goes well. Any time things have gotten rough the last few years, Swinney and his allies have held that reality as a be-careful-what-you-wish-for cudgel over a fan base they increasingly see as ungrateful for two national championships and a long run of sustained success. But that also works the other direction. If Swinney is so convinced that he could go somewhere else and provide a new, more appreciative fan base with national championships, maybe that's exactly what he should do. In the immediate aftermath of the Tigers' loss on Saturday, would anyone be particularly upset? It's really that bad at Clemson right now. Not only is this a 1-3 football team that dumped a bucket of ice on top of its overheated preseason expectations, it's even worse because this was supposed to be the year Clemson had built toward. After several years where the talent level was clearly down a tick from the national championship teams, the experts spent all summer telling us Clemson was loaded on defense and finally had more playmakers on offense to help senior QB Cade Klubnik make the leap to the top of the NFL Draft. And now it's all gone bust. ? VIEWING GUIDE WATCHLIST: MONDAY, SEPT. 22 The Ravens have put up 81 points through two games. (Rob Carr/Getty Images) ? Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ? ICYMI HEADLINES ? Pearl steps down: Longtime Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl announced his retirement roughly six weeks before the season begins. "I've been a part of college basketball for almost 50 years," he said. "And the truth is, it's time." His son, Steven, will take over for the Tigers. ⚽️ Ballon d'Or winners: French forward Ousmane Dembélé (Paris Saint-Germain) won his first Ballon d'Or, while Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona) took home her third straight, becoming the first woman to win the honor three times. ⚾️ Padres clinch: The Padres walked off the Brewers in the 11th inning to clinch a playoff spot, marking the first time in two decades they've reached the postseason in consecutive years. ? Injury report: 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in Sunday's win. Rockets guard Fred VanVleet also tore his ACL at a team minicamp, and will likely miss most, if not all, of the upcoming NBA season. ? Nash joining Suns: Franchise legend Steve Nash is returning to the Suns as a senior adviser as they rebuild in the aftermath of the Kevin Durant trade. ⚾️ AL CENTRAL CLEVELAND IS ON THE BRINK OF HISTORY It's all smiles for the Guardians lately. (Stephen Maturen/Getty Images) Two months ago, the Guardians were barreling towards a rare sub-.500 season for one of MLB's most consistent organizations. Now, they're six days away from pulling off the biggest comeback ever. That was then: On the morning of July 9, the Guardians trailed the Tigers by 15.5 games in the AL Central. Cleveland had the fourth-worst record in the AL (42-48) while Detroit had the best record in all of baseball (59-34). This is now: The Guardians (84-72) are currently just one game back of the Tigers (85-71) as they prepare to host Detroit in a three-game series starting tonight (6:40pm ET, MLB.TV) that could make or break both of their seasons. Chasing history: If Cleveland completes the comeback, it will be the largest deficit ever overcome to win a division (since 1969) or league (pre-1969). The current record is held by the 1914 Boston Braves, who erased a 15-game deficit to win the NL pennant by a whopping 10.5 games. It's been tough sledding for the Tigers of late. (Duane Burleson/Getty Images) The other side: Cleveland being red hot (42-24 since July 9) has coincided with Detroit going ice cold (26-37 in that same time). That discrepancy has been even more lopsided recently, with the Guardians winning 15 of 17 and the Tigers losing nine of 10 to put their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Cleveland's ERA since the turnaround began has been an MLB-best 3.32 while Detroit's has cratered to 4.82 — the sixth-worst mark in baseball. Consider this: The Guardians have allowed a microscopic 34 runs in their last 19 games. The next-fewest in that time? The Cubs, with 66. Looking ahead: The stakes of this week's three-game series couldn't be bigger, with Cleveland trailing by one game and needing just one win to clinch the season series (and thus the tiebreaker). Then it's Guardians vs. Rangers and Tigers at Red Sox to close out the regular season. What the playoffs would look like if the season ended today. (Stefan Milic/Yahoo Sports) Other races to watch: AL West: The Mariners (87-69) swept the Astros (84-72) over the weekend to take a three-game lead as they seek their first division title since 2001. AL East: The Blue Jays (90-66) lead the Yankees (88-68) by two games as they seek their first division title since 2015. AL Wild Card: The AL East loser should take the top spot, while the losers of the AL Central and AL West battle the Red Sox (85-71) for the other two. NL West: The Dodgers (88-68) lead the Padres (86-71) by 2.5 games as they seek their 12th division title in 13 years. NL Wild Card: The Cubs and NL West loser are safe, while the Reds (80-76), Mets (80-76) and Diamondbacks (79-77) compete for the final spot. ? MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL LIONS 38, RAVENS 30 Amon-Ra St. Brown celebrates a touchdown. (Michael Owens/Getty Images) The Lions earned an impressive win on Monday night in Baltimore, racking up 426 yards of offense and limiting the Ravens' potent rushing attack to just 85 yards. Lamar Jackson put up numbers (21-27, 288 yards, 3 TD), but he's never been sacked more times than he was last night (7). Derrick Henry fumbled for the third straight game. Detroit improves to 2-1 on the season with wins over the Bears and Ravens, while Baltimore falls to 1-2 with losses to the Bills and Lions. Historic trio: This was the 10th game in which Lions teammates Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and Amon-Ra St. Brown each scored at least one scrimmage TD. That's the most such games by any trio in NFL history. ⚽️ NWSL THE KC CURRENT ARE A JUGGERNAUT (Davis Long/Yahoo Sports) The Kansas City Current are hurtling towards the best season in NWSL history, lapping the field by a comical margin in one of the most singularly dominant campaigns in recent sports memory. Tale of the tape: KC clinched the NWSL Shield (best record) on Saturday with five games to spare, becoming the fastest team in league history to achieve that feat. At 17-2-2, they sit atop the table with 53 points, and their lead over second-place Washington (37 points) is nearly as big as Washington’s lead over 12th-place Bay FC (19 points). They've allowed just 10 goals in 21 games, eight fewer than anyone else. They've also recorded nine straight clean sheets. Nine shutouts in a row! They're not just winning on defense, either, with a league-best 40 goals scored — seven more than any other team. Add it all up and they have an absurd +30 goal differential. The next-best mark? +10! Chasing Orlando: KC looks poised to break the single-season records for both wins (18) and points (60), set last year by the Orlando Pride. And they're heavy favorites to win their first championship, much like Orlando did last year. KC celebrates winning the Shield on Saturday. (Jay Biggerstaff/NWSL via Getty Images) Recipe for success: The Current were founded just five years ago when the Utah Royals, embroiled in scandal, were sold to a group that included Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. Since then, ownership has invested heavily up and down the organization. Last spring they opened CPKC Stadium, a privately-funded $120 million venue that was the first stadium ever built specifically for a women's professional sports team. And earlier this year they became the first NWSL team to launch a fully-formed developmental team. They've invested plenty of money in talent, too, including paying a then-record intraleague transfer fee of $600,000 back in August for last year's No. 1 pick, Ally Sentnor. No signing has been more important Malawian striker Temwa Chaŵinga, who won MVP in her debut season last year while setting the NWSL's single-season goals record (21). She looks likely to repeat as MVP this fall. What to watch: The Current next play this Friday night in Kansas City, where they haven't lost since July… of last year. ⛳️ USA VS. EUROPE RYDER CUP WEEK: SETTING THE STAGE A view of the 1st tee at Bethpage Black. (David Davies/PA Images via Getty Images) Welcome to Ryder Cup Week. Three days from now, a dozen of the best American golfers will square off against their European counterparts at Bethpage Black (Farmingdale, New York) in the 45th edition of the iconic match play competition. Matchup history: The U.S. holds a 27-15-2 advantage in the all-time series, but Europe has won 10 of the past 14 events. (Carl Recine/Getty Images) How it works: There will be two sessions of foursomes (pairs alternate shots) and four-ball (lower score among each pair wins) matches on Friday and Saturday, then every golfer will square off in a singles match on Sunday. Scoring system: Each match is worth a single point. If a match is tied, or halved, each team will receive half a point. The first team to 14.5 points wins. If the match ends in a 14-14 tie, the last team to win the Ryder Cup (Europe) will retain the title. Keegan Bradley (USA captain) and Luke Donald (Europe captain) speak with the media on Monday. Not surprisingly, the majority of bets (58%) and dollars wagered (68%) are on the Red, White and Blue to win. What Vegas is saying: "We're seeing about 70% of action come in on the USA to win the Ryder Cup," Halvor Egeland, a BetMGM trader manager, told Yahoo Sports. "I'd love to be patriotic, but it looks like the book will be cheering for Europe. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are taking the most action on top points scorer, to no surprise." ? NOT EXACTLY (Jamie Squire/Getty Images) For the first time ever, Team USA will be paid for its participation in the Ryder Cup — a change being met, perhaps unfairly, with criticism from all sides. What's happening: All 12 members of Team USA (and captain Keegan Bradley) will receive $300,000 to go towards a charity of their choosing, plus a $200,000 stipend to spend as they wish, as determined by the PGA of America late last year. The charitable component is not new, just increased, as American players have received $200,000 for that purpose at every Ryder Cup since 1999. It's the first-of-its-kind stipend that's causing a lot of noise during a week that should be more focused on golf than money. And perhaps no one is making more noise than the Americans' on-course opponents. Shots fired: "This isn't a week to get paid," European captain Luke Donald said on Monday. "I feel like, if you have those experiences that you remember for the rest of your life, that's worth more than a couple hundred thousand dollars in the back of your pocket." That echoes the sentiments of some of his players, with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry saying last year that they'd "pay for the privilege to play" in the Ryder Cup. The team, according to Donald, outright rejected the idea of getting money. But the headline, which implies some sort of American greed, belies the reality of the situation, which is that most if not all of the Americans are planning to donate their entire stipend. What they're saying: "You guys keep talking about it and trying to make it this negative thing," Xander Schauffele said on Tuesday. "There's a lot of pride that comes into playing in one of these, and yes, we're happy to get paid for this, and yes, I plan on donating it." "I don't like to give charitable dollars for some kind of recognition," added Scottie Scheffler. "We have something planned for the money that we'll be receiving. I think it's a really cool thing that the PGA of America has empowered us to do." Even Patrick Cantlay, who made waves at the 2023 Ryder Cup for taking his hat off in what some viewed as a silent protest over not being paid, will be donating his stipend. "This event is very good at generating lots of noise," said Cantlay. "I think we need to put 100% of our focus on playing the best golf we can and let the noise be exactly what it is — just noise." My take… At the end of the day, the stipend debate is less about dollars and more about perception. $200,000 is pennies to these guys, and both teams will walk away without pocketing a dime. But because the U.S. framed it as a payment (that they'll give away) while Europe framed it as a rejection (out of principle), the optics diverged and muddied the story. The buzzier headline was that a group of rich golfers were being paid to play in a tournament that should instead be about pride and patriotism. Layer in golf's ongoing money drama thanks to LIV, and this was always bound to turn into the week's loudest — and dumbest — subplot. The fact of the matter is that all the way back in December, Bradley said the plan was for the team to donate the whole sum. But somewhere along the way, that messaging got lost and the story took on a life of its own. If anything, this has been a failure of communication by the PGA of America, which greenlit the stipend. We've now reached the point where Team Europe is seemingly flexing its moral superiority over Team USA… despite the fact that both teams are not being paid. As the old adage goes, never let the truth get in the way of a good story. ?? How are you feeling about your team? ? NBA SCANDAL SHOULD THE CLIPPERS TRADE FOR ANOTHER STAR? (Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) With the NBA's investigation of the Clippers ongoing, should the franchise push all of its chips to the middle and pursue another star? From Yahoo Sports' Tom Haberstroh: Lawrence Frank has a decision to make. The Clippers president of basketball operations is undoubtedly monitoring the progress of the league's cap circumvention investigation and evaluating the team's exposure of possible wrongdoing in Kawhi Leonard's alleged "no-show" job with now-bankrupt bank Aspiration. The clock is ticking. Evidence continues to pile up. The shadow of NBA commissioner Adam Silver's hammer looms overhead. Frank can preempt all of that by pressing the nuclear option — trading all of the team's available first-round picks. Because here's the thing: In all likelihood, the Silver hammer won't be dropping anytime soon, if it does at all. Considering the size and scope of the investigation with allegations dating back to 2021, it's reasonable to assume it might take a year or more for the NBA's commissioned firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rose & Katz to file its determinations. Draft picks, suspensions and contract voidance are all on the line. But that all might not arrive until the 2026-27 season. Which means Frank has something of a free roll for the 2025-26 season. The Clippers could push all of their chips to the middle and float a draft pick package — say, two unprotected firsts and a 2031 swap — and pursue another star to complement James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, Bradley Beal and Ivica Zubac. Can you imagine if said star is the missing piece for the 2026 NBA Champion Clippers? That'd be quite the trophy ceremony. But really, if the Clippers trade for a star using their picks, what could Silver do about it? As long as the investigation is ongoing, the answer is almost certainly nothing. It's a fascinating wrinkle to this entire saga. Would Frank dare? Three potential targets: Zion Williamson (Pelicans), Michael Porter Jr. (Nets), Brandon Ingram (Raptors) ? In today's edition: Baseball hurtles towards the finish, meet Team USA, meet Team Europe, Pro Football HOF candidates, vote for your AL MVP, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ⚾️ FOUR DAYS LEFT BASEBALL HURTLES TOWARDS THE FINISH LINE Cal Raleigh and the Mariners celebrate winning the AL West. (Steph Chambers/Getty Images) The Mariners ended a 24-year drought … Cal Raleigh (60 HR), Kyle Schwarber (56 HR) and Aaron Judge (51 HR) hit two homers each … Cleveland beat Detroit again to inch closer to pulling off the biggest comeback ever … The Yankees tied the Blue Jays atop the AL East … Paul Skenes put the finishing touches on his Cy Young campaign … And those are just a few of the headlines from Wednesday night in Major League Baseball. AL West Notable games: Mariners 9, Rockies 2 … Athletics 6, Astros 0 For the first time since 2001, the Mariners (89-69) are AL West champions. How long ago was that? Ichiro was a rookie, LeBron James was a junior in high school and Tom Brady had yet to make an NFL start. … Meanwhile in Sacramento, the Astros (84-74) lost their fifth straight game to put their playoff hopes further in jeopardy. Big Dumper hits 60: Cal Raleigh hit his 59th and 60th homers of the season to become the seventh member of the 60-HR club. He joins three players who come with asterisks (Barry Bonds,* Mark McGwire*, Sammy Sosa*) and three players who don't (Aaron Judge, Roger Maris, Babe Ruth). AL Central Notable games: Guardians 5, Tigers 1 On July 8, the Guardians were 15.5 games behind the Tigers. On Sept. 10, they were still 9.5 games back. On Wednesday, they moved one game ahead. Cleveland has now won 17 of its past 19 games (including two straight against the Tigers), while Detroit has lost 11 of 12 to cede control of the division and risk missing the playoffs entirely. Wild stat: The Guardians are in first place despite allowing more runs than they've scored. Their run differential (-2) ranks 19th in baseball and third in their own division behind the Tigers (+66) and Royals (+1). (Ishika Samant/Getty Images) AL East Notable games: Yankees 8, White Sox 1 … Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 1 The Yankees (90-68) and Blue Jays (90-68) are now tied atop the division, with Toronto holding the tiebreaker. New York will need to win one more game than Toronto to claim the division crown. The Red Sox (87-71) are also still technically alive (0.1% chance). 50 x 4: Aaron Judge became the fourth player in MLB history to post four seasons with 50+ HR, joining Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire* and Sammy Sosa.* Judge added No. 51 later in the game. AL Wild Card Notable games: Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 1 … Guardians 5, Tigers 1 … Athletics 6, Astros 0 The Yankees (90-68) are sitting comfortably in the top spot, while the Red Sox (87-71) are in great position behind them. They're two games up on the Tigers (85-73), who they host this weekend, and three games up on the Astros (84-74), who could miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017. If the postseason started today: (1) Blue Jays and (2) Mariners would get byes; (3) Guardians vs. (6) Tigers and (4) Yankees vs. (5) Red Sox in the Wild Card Series. Arizona had a golden opportunity to move into playoff position but lost in extra innings. (Norm Hall/Getty Images) NL Wild Card Notable games: Cubs 10, Mets 3 … Pirates 4, Reds 3 (11) … Dodgers 5, D-backs 4 (11) The Diamondbacks (80-78) and Reds (80-78) had chances to bump the Mets (81-77) out of playoff position, but they both came up short in extras. At least Cincinnati has an excuse: they went up against Paul Skenes, who tossed six scoreless innings to finish the season with a 1.97 ERA and 216 strikeouts in 187.2 innings. Is that good? 40 years later: Skenes is the first qualified pitcher in his age-23 season or younger to post a sub-2.00 ERA since Dwight Gooden in 1985. That season is widely regarded as one of the best ever by a pitcher, so pretty good company for the Pirates ace. NL West Notable games: Dodgers 5, D-backs 4 (11) … Brewers 3, Padres 1 It was a great night for the Dodgers (89-69), who are now one win away from clinching their 12th NL West title in the past 13 seasons. It was a terrible night for the Padres (87-72), who are now 2.5 games back in the division and 2.5 games behind the Cubs (89-69) for the first wild card spot. If the postseason started today: (1) Brewers and (2) Phillies would get byes; (3) Dodgers vs. (6) Mets and (4) Cubs vs. (5) Padres in the Wild Card Series. ⛳️ RYDER CUP TEAM USA: MEET THE PLAYERS (Yahoo Sports) Let's meet the 12 golfers who'll be representing the home team this weekend at Bethpage Black. Ryder Cup record: 5-2-1 Hometown: Long Beach, California College: UCLA Sam Burns (No. 23): Following a cold streak in the spring, Burns has made 16 consecutive cuts and enters this weekend with three straight finishes inside the top 15. Shane Lowry (No. 24): The 38-year-old Irishman had another solid if unexceptional year on tour, threatening to win a few tournaments with four top-10 finishes, two runner-ups and just three missed cuts. Ryder Cup record: 2-3-1 Hometown: Clara, County Offaly, Ireland College: University College Dublin ??????? Tyrrell Hatton (No. 25): One of two LIV golfers on Team Europe, but the only one to earn an automatic bid thanks to a victory on the DP World Tour back in January, as well as three finishes inside the top 16 at majors this year. Ryder Cup record: 5-4-2 Hometown: High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England College: n/a ??????? Matt Fitzpatrick (No. 29): After a slow start, he finished strong with five top-10 finishes across his last 10 events, including two at majors. His Ryder Cup record leaves something to be desired, though, earning his first point two years ago in his third appearance. Ryder Cup record: 1-7-0 Hometown: Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England College: Northwestern ?? Rasmus Højgaard (No. 58): The only difference between this year's team and the one that dominated two years ago in Rome is that Rasmus is replacing his identical twin brother, Nicolai. Guess we know who to blame if Europe struggles at Bethpage! Ryder Cup record: Rookie Hometown: Billund, Denmark College: n/a ?? Jon Rahm (No. 73): Rahmbo was LIV's individual champion this year (oddly enough without winning a single tournament), and the former world No. 1 also impressed on the major circuit with three top-15 finishes, including two inside the top eight. Ryder Cup record: 6-3-3 Hometown: Barrika, Spain College: Arizona State ? CLASS OF 2026 HOF UNVEILS FIRST-TIME CANDIDATES Philip Rivers and Drew Brees during a joint practice with the Chargers and Saints in 2019. (Mark Rightmire/MediaNews Group/OC Register via Getty Images) The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 13 first-time candidates for the Class of 2026: QB: Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Alex Smith RB: Frank Gore, LeSean McCoy WR: Larry Fitzgerald TE: Jason Witten, Greg Olsen OL: Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro DL: Geno Atkins, Jurrell Casey LB: Thomas Davis Who will get in? My take: Brees and Fitzgerald are first-ballot Hall of Famers, no doubt about it. Rivers, Gore and Witten also seem like locks to make it to Canton — but not on the first ballot. I could also see McCoy getting in eventually, but he's more of a maybe than the others. How it works: The first-timers will compete for votes from a total field of 128 modern-era candidates. Among them are second-year candidates Marshawn Lynch, Luke Kuechly, Terrell Suggs, Adam Vinatieri and Eli Manning, all of whom missed the cut on their first ballot. ? GO DEEPER GOOD READS (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports) ? Dan Wolken: Kirby Smart has an Alabama problem. Was it just Nick Saban or something worse? We know Kirby Smart had a Nick Saban problem. You could see by the tension on his face, the uncharacteristic gambles he made and the unusual ways that games would go sideways for Georgia when Smart had to face his mentor. But we're about to find out if Smart also has an Alabama problem. In seven games against the Crimson Tide, he's lost six of them. World Cup champs: Host nation England beat Canada, 33-13, to win their third Women's Rugby World Cup title (1994, 2014). There were 81,885 fans in attendance for the final, a women's rugby record. ⛳️ USA VS. EUROPE EUROPE WINS THE 45TH RYDER CUP The thrill of victory. (David Cannon/Getty Images) Europe held off an epic U.S. rally on Sunday at Bethpage Black to win the Ryder Cup, 15-13, and continue their recent dominance. They've now won two of the last four Ryder Cups on U.S. soil and 11 of the last 15 overall. From Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee: In match play, as in life, the little things matter. One missed putt can lead to one lost hole, one lost hole can lead to one lost match, one lost match can lead to one lost session, one lost session leads to a lost Ryder Cup. Little issues lead to big problems. That's how you end up on the losing end of a 15-13 Ryder Cup despite delivering one of the greatest singles-day performances in the Cup's history. That's how you end up with questions about every element of the American Ryder Cup experience, from your team's putting skills to its heart and spine, from the captain's fitness for the job to the infrastructure choosing and supporting him. Everything is under scrutiny now, and it all ought to be. The United States is in Ryder Cup freefall. Two straight losses to a team that's a perfect mix of youth and veterans, a hungry, incredibly well-organized group of what sure seems like best mates. Two straight Ryder Cups looking lost, overmatched, beaten in every phase of the game — not by much, true, but by enough to lose. There are no silver medals in the Ryder Cup. How did the United States get here, and how can the American team reverse its downward spiral? The agony of defeat. (Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images) In the immediate aftermath of the loss, U.S. captain Keegan Bradley spent much of the post-Cup press conference leaping onto the sword. "This is no one's fault but mine," he said. "When you are the leader of the team and you''e the coach, the captain, whatever you want to call it, and you lose, you have to take the blame." That selflessness is an admirable trait, and quite the stark difference from some other Ryder Cup captains who blamed their players for the loss. And he's right; Ryder Cup captains neither deserve as much scorn as they get for losing, nor as much praise as they get for winning. But blame does belong on Bradley's shoulders. He made the controversial pairings of players who didn't fit, and then repeated the pairings the very next day — to losses in both sessions. His setup plan failed, and failed spectacularly. "I definitely made a mistake on the course setup," he said. "I should have listened a little bit more to my intuition. For whatever reason, that wasn't the right way to set the course up. The greens were as soft as I've ever seen greens without it raining. Especially here, it can get pretty firm, and they never firmed up." Little things leading to big things. A decision to pair two players despite data suggesting otherwise, and then a decision to pair them again after they lose. A decision to mow down the rough and soften the greens. A stroke here and there, and soon enough you’ve lost a hole. And you know what happens from there. But the rot in the United States Ryder Cup effort runs deeper than just this week. There are systemic issues at play here, years and years of the same mistakes made by different people. Rory McIlroy hoists the trophy. (Andrew Redington/Getty Images) As the United States was finishing up its press conference, an unmistakable sound rose up from the putting green adjacent to the interview tent: one final round of "Olé! Olé! Olé!" The European fans were heralding the arrival of the victorious European team, ready for their own turn in front of the media. Perhaps the European team turned up early to their press conference. Perhaps the Americans ran a touch long. Either way, the two teams crossed paths once more. It was a little thing, but it surely stung like hell for the United States team. They filed out of the interview tent and past the delirious European team without a word exchanged between them. They'll all meet again as individuals at tournaments soon, but it will be a long time before they meet as teams again. And the U.S. will have to marinate in this pain until then. ⚾️ POSTSEASON MLB PLAYOFFS: THE FIELD IS SET (Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports) Six months and 2,430 games later, the MLB regular season is in the rearview mirror and the postseason is upon us. Down to the wire: Three races were decided on the final day. AL Central: The Guardians (88-74) pulled off the largest divisional comeback in MLB history, rallying from a 15.5-game deficit to overtake the Tigers (87-75), who they'll host in the Wild Card round. AL East: The Blue Jays (94-68) finished ahead of the Yankees (94-68) via tiebreaker to clinch their first division crown in 10 years and lock up the American League's top seed. NL Wild Card: The Reds (83-79) lost on Sunday but still punched their ticket after the Mets (83-79) put the finishing touches on their "agonizing, slow-motion collapse" with a shutout loss to the Marlins. What's next: The Wild Card round begins tomorrow with series openers in Cleveland (Tigers at Guardians), Chicago (Padres at Cubs), New York (Red Sox at Yankees) and Los Angeles (Reds at Dodgers). Title favorites: The Phillies (+425 at BetMGM) have the longest odds for a World Series favorite entering the postseason in 10 years. The Dodgers (+500) and Mariners (+500) have the second-best odds, followed by the Brewers (+800), Blue Jays (+800) and Yankees (+850). ? Members phkrause Posted September 30, 2025 Author Members Posted September 30, 2025 Gaming Giant Buyout Electronic Arts, the US video game giant behind "Madden NFL" and "EA Sports FC," announced yesterday it will be taken private in a $55B all-cash deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and two American private equity firms. The transaction is set to be the largest-ever private equity-funded buyout. The Saudi fund, alongside PE firms Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, will pay stockholders $210 per share. Silver Lake is also among the investors poised to oversee TikTok’s US operations, while Affinity Partners is managed by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. For Saudi Arabia, the acquisition will advance an ongoing push into the gaming industry as the kingdom seeks to diversify its oil-dependent economy. PIF already owns about 10% of EA and launched Savvy Games Group in 2021 to spearhead multibillion-dollar gaming investments. The deal is subject to approval by the US Committee on Foreign Investment. Lawmakers previously raised concerns about Saudi investments in American golf. Quote phkrause Read Isaiah 10:1-13

Power rankings: With all that in mind, here's how the 12 contenders stack up as the playoffs get underway. ? COAST TO COAST HEADLINES FROM NBA MEDIA DAYS (Patrick T. Fallon/AFP via Getty Images) The question drew a wry laugh from LeBron James. Does he intend to try to stiff-arm Father Time long enough to play alongside both of his sons? Could he envision a scenario where he extends his NBA career deep enough into his 40s to share a court with not only Bronny but also 18-year-old Bryce? “No, I’m not waiting on Bryce,” James said Monday at Lakers media day. “He has his own timeline. I’ve got my timeline. I don’t know if they quite match up.” That was emblematic of the tone James struck during a 15-minute conversation with reporters on the eve of his 23rd NBA training camp. The 40-year-old did not commit to playing beyond this season. He insisted he still doesn’t know when he’ll retire but acknowledged it’s “a lot sooner than later.” As a result, James described himself as “super excited” and “super invested” about a season during which he’ll partner with Luka Dončić to chase the Lakers’ 18th championship. James intends to savor even the most mundane moments as he nears the end of a glittering career that has straddled three different decades. “I’m trying to stay present knowing that the end is soon,” James said. “Not taking for granted a Tuesday night in a city that maybe I don’t want to be in that night. Let’s lock in because I don’t know how many more times I’ll have the opportunity to play the game or compete.” For the first time in his NBA career, James is entering a season on the final year of his contract. When asked if reporters would see him at Lakers media day again next fall, James laughed once more and said only, “Maybe.” (Kenneth Richmond/Yahoo Sports) More from NBA media days: Houston: Kevin Durant expects to sign an extension with the Rockets, but doesn’t know when it will happen Los Angeles: Kawhi Leonard dismisses cap circumvention allegations as ‘clickbait,’ says Clippers did ‘no wrongdoing’ Boston: How the Celtics are preparing for the season without Jayson Tatum, including a visit from Bill Nye the Science Guy Denver: Nikola Jokić talks roster rebuild, future after declining an an extension: ‘My plan is to be a Nugget forever’ Dallas: Anthony Davis says he’ll wear goggles for the rest of his career following offseason eye surgery Milwaukee: Giannis Antetokounmpo not in attendance due to COVID, but addresses talk about his Bucks future Looking ahead: NBA preseason begins on Thursday, and the regular season tips off three weeks from today (Oct. 21). ? (NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images) On Sept. 30, 1939, Fordham University — a national power at the time — hosted tiny Waynesburg College (now University) in the first football game ever televised. That was then: TV was a sensation at that year's World's Fair in Queens, but it was still very much an experiment. Only about 500 people tuned in to see Fordham win 34-7 in a game that took place on Randall's Island in New York City. "When I returned to my home in Youngstown, Ohio, I told my wife about it. She was all excited, asking me what television was and how did it work. Of course, I did not know." — Game official Jack McPhee This is now: In the decades since, football has become the most popular TV show in America — by an incredibly wide margin. Of the 100 most-watched broadcasts last year, 77 were football games. ? Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ? ICYMI HEADLINES ? Record-breaking contract: The Wild signed Russian forward Kirill Kaprizov to an eight-year, $136 million extension. It's the richest deal in NHL history in terms of both total contract dollars and average annual value ($17 million). ? Curry bros team up: Seth Curry has reached a one-year deal with the Warriors, where he’ll be NBA teammates with his brother for the first time. Golden State also inked Jonathan Kuminga to a two-year, $48.5 million deal on a transaction-heavy Tuesday. ⚾️ Angels cleaning house? Neither manager Ron Washington nor interim manager Ray Montgomery will return to the Angels in 2026, and the status of GM Perry Minasian moving forward isn't clear. ? Flacco benched: Browns rookie QB Dillon Gabriel will get the first start of his career this weekend in London against the Vikings. He takes over for veteran Joe Flacco, who will serve as his backup. Shedeur Sanders will remain the team's No. 3 option. ? New media rights deal: The WNBA announced an 11-year media rights deal with Versant that will see USA Network air at least 50 games annually, plus portions of the playoffs and Finals. ? TICKET PUNCHED ACES ADVANCE ON TURBULENT NIGHT FOR WNBA Jewell Lloyd, Chelsea Gray and A’ja Wilson celebrate the win. (Ian Maule/Getty Images) The Aces fended off the Fever, 107-98, in an overtime thriller on Tuesday night in Las Vegas to punch their ticket to the WNBA Finals, where they'll play the Mercury. Stars of the night: League MVP A'ja Wilson (35 points, 8 rebounds) and Jackie Young (32 points, 10 assists) became the first duo in WNBA history to each score 30 points in a playoff game. It was also Wilson's eighth career 30-point playoff game, which is tied for the most ever. Looking ahead: The Aces are now four wins away from their third championship in four seasons, which would immortalize their current dynasty as one of the best the WNBA has ever seen. Cathy Engelbert (L) poses with 2025 All-Star Game MVP Napheesa Collier. (Steph Chambers/Getty Images) Meanwhile, off the court: Lynx star Napheesa Collier made headlines when she ripped the WNBA's leadership during her end-of-season press conference. A sampling of what was said: “We have the best players in the world. We have the best fans in the world. But right now we have the worst leadership in the world.” "Since I've been in the league, you've heard the constant concerns about officiating, and it has now reached levels of inconsistency that plague our sport and undermine the integrity in which it operates. Whether the league cares about the health of the players is one thing, but to also not care about the product we put on the floor is truly self-sabotage.” "We go to battle every day to protect a shield that doesn't value us. The league believes it succeeds despite its players, not because of them." Calling out Cathy: Collier, who serves as VP of the WNBA Players Association, criticized commissioner Cathy Engelbert ahead of an offseason that will be defined by CBA negotiations. She recalled one conversation, in particular, that set her off. “I sat across from Cathy and asked how she planned to address the officiating issues in our league. Her response was, 'Well, only the losers complain about the refs.'" “I also asked how she planned to fix the fact that players like Caitlin [Clark], Angel [Reese] and Paige [Bueckers], who are clearly driving massive revenue for the league, are making so little for their first four years. Her response was, 'Caitlin should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn't make anything.'” "And in that same conversation, she told me, 'Players should be on their knees thanking their lucky stars for the media rights deal that I got them.' That's the mentality driving our league from the top." ⚾️ MLB POSTSEASON IN PHOTOS: WILD CARD ROUND (Nick Cammett/Getty Images) Cleveland — AL Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal struck out a career-best 14 batters to lift the Tigers past the Guardians, 2-1, in a battle of division foes. Cleveland's Gavin Williams threw a gem of his own (6 IP, 0 ER), but a pair of errors doomed the home team. Life on the brink: “Our backs have been against the wall for three months,” said manager Stephen Vogt when asked about the Guardians facing elimination. “What’s one more day?” Seiya Suzuki celebrates his home run. (Matt Dirksen/Chicago Cubs via Getty Images) Chicago — Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly hit back-to-back home runs as the Cubs beat the Padres, 3-1, to win their first playoff game since the 2017 NLCS. This was Suzuki's fifth straight game with a homer. (Daniel Shirey/Getty Images) New York — The Red Sox survived a ninth-inning scare to beat the Yankees, 3-1, behind a masterclass from Garrett Crochet (7.2 IP, 1 ER, 11 K) and a clutch hit by Masataka Yoshida, who drove in two runs on the first postseason pitch he ever saw. This is crazy: The Yankees are the first team in MLB playoff history to have the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the 9th inning but not score a run and lose the game. (Ronald Martinez/Getty Images) Los Angeles — Shohei Ohtani (2 HR) and Teoscar Hernández (2 HR) powered the Dodgers to a 10-5 victory over the Reds, who are making their first full-season playoff appearance in over a decade. ? WEEK 5 NFL POWER RANKINGS (Yahoo Sports) The Bills and Eagles held onto the top two spots in this week's NFL power rankings, while the Lions (up 2), Rams (up 2) and Chargers (down 2) rounded out the top 5. On the move: The No. 8 Seahawks (up 6), No. 11 Broncos (up 4) and No. 12 Jaguars (up 4) were the biggest risers. The No. 14 Ravens (down 7), No. 13 49ers (down 4), No. 16 Commanders (down 4), No. 17 Vikings (down 4) and No. 26 Bengals (down 4) were the biggest fallers. ? Are you not entertained?! In today's edition: Three Game 3s, inside NCAA Hockey's postseason selection model, Miller's historic heater, QB University, a new way to play Yahoo Fantasy Basketball, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ? ICYMI HEADLINES ⚾️ Dodgers advance: The NL West champs beat the Reds, 8-4, to advance to the Divisional Round for the 13th straight season. Next up: Shohei Ohtani will make his historic postseason pitching debut as the Game 1 starter vs. the Phillies. ? Big Ten exploring PE path: Could the Big Ten get backing from a private equity fund? The league has reportedly been in talks "for months" about private capital investments worth at least $2 billion, sources tell Yahoo Sports. ⚾️ MLB manager moves: Albert Pujols is reportedly the leading candidate to be the Angels' next skipper; Braves manager Brian Snitker will not return; Rockies GM Bill Schmidt stepped down after Colorado's historically bad season. ? Abrupt retirement: Colts CB Xavien Howard is retiring from the NFL to prioritize his family. "My kids are more important to me than football," said the four-time Pro Bowler, who had started all four games so far in his age-32 season. ⛳️ Ryder Cup viewership: NBC averaged just 3.22 million viewers for Sunday singles, the lowest number since before 2000. Sky Sports, on the other hand, set viewership records across the pond (5 million on Sunday) as Europe retained the Cup. ? WATCHLIST TODAY'S SLATE: WIN OR GO HOME (Yahoo Sports) The Tigers, Padres, Yankees and Reds were all facing elimination on Thursday. Three of the four avoided that fate (sorry, Reds fans), setting up three winner-take-all Game 3s today. Buckle up! Red Sox at Yankees | 8pm ET, ESPN Starting pitchers: LHP Connelly Early (1-2, 2.33 ERA) vs. RHP Cam Schlittler (4-3, 2.96 ERA) This will be the first game in postseason history between two starters each making their 15th career appearance or fewer. Early (fifth start) wasn't in the plans to be in Boston’s rotation in September, let alone October. Schlittler (15th), who grew up in Massachusetts rooting for the Red Sox, made his Yankees debut in July. “Fittingly, as this AL Wild Card Series between the forever rivals gets ready to go the distance, it will pit a pitching matchup nobody could have predicted even a month ago. But that’s Red Sox-Yankees, when another great subplot always seems to be right around the corner.” Tigers at Guardians | 3pm, ABC Starting pitchers: RHP Jack Flaherty (8-15, 4.64 ERA) vs. RHP Slade Cecconi (7-7, 4.30 ERA) Cleveland exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday to capture the winning feeling that defined their past month of play — perhaps just in time. Can Detroit, who sat atop the AL Central virtually all season, win tonight to set up a date with Seattle? Padres at Cubs | 5pm, ESPN Starting pitchers: RHP Yu Darvish (5-5, 5.38 ERA) vs. RHP Jameson Taillon (11-7, 3.68 ERA) History has not been kind to the Cubs in winner-take-all games at Wrigley Field, where they're 0-3 all-time. Is this the year they rewrite the narrative? Or will it be the Padres moving on to play the top-seeded Brewers? More to watch: ? NFL: 49ers at Rams (8pm, Prime) … Brock Purdy (toe) has been ruled out of tonight's NFC West title. Both teams are 3-1. ? NBA Preseason: Knicks vs. 76ers (12pm, NBA) … Tip-off game in Abu Dhabi, UAE. ?? FOOD FOR THOUGHT SHOULD COLLEGE FOOTBALL COPY COLLEGE HOCKEY? (Bruno Rouby/Yahoo Sports) Could college football learn from college hockey when it comes to deciding its postseason field? We are a little more than a month away from the weekly outrage ritual where the College Football Playoff Selection Committee puts out rankings that don't matter and explains them poorly before ultimately selecting a 12-team field that will spawn an entire offseason of grievance for the teams and conferences on the wrong side of the line. For better or worse, committees are part of college sports culture. There's a Committee on Infractions, competition committees, a Division I Council and of course blue-ribbon panels that choose the at-large participants for NCAA championship tournaments in basketball, baseball and a variety of other sports. If the football powers that be ever wanted to overhaul the CFP selection process and implement a mathematical formula for choosing the teams, there's already a model for it that exists in college sports. And in general, the participants wouldn’t want it any other way. "You like the fact that everyone knows the rules going in,” Providence men’s hockey coach Nate Leaman told Yahoo Sports. "It’s cut and dry. Everyone knows where everyone stands throughout the whole year. You know whether you're in or you're out." Western Michigan celebrates winning the 2025 national championship. (Isaac Wasserman/NCAA Photos via Getty Images) Since the early 1990s, college hockey has used a completely objective system to choose at-large teams for the NCAA tournament, with rankings that are publicly available and updated every night there are games. Though the formula has evolved over the years and is still evolving, the gist of it was to take the three factors the committee was supposed to consider and measure every team in the country by comparing them with every other team. All the selection committee does after the conference tournaments is plug in the six automatic bid winners and then take the 10 highest-rated teams from the formula to plug into the bracket. Sometimes there are necessary small seeding tweaks to deal with geography issues, but the committee has zero discretion when it comes to team selection. No mess, no controversy, no complaints. "It certainly takes a lot of the pressure off," Tim Troville, the Division I men's ice hockey committee chairman and associate athletics director at Harvard, told Yahoo Sports. "We like to be really open and transparent. Mathematically you’re in, or mathematically you’re out. It’s been really good for hockey." Perhaps the best part is that fans (and coaching staffs) can play with the numbers online and know exactly how certain wins and losses will impact their team's chances of getting in. For bubble teams, that means a lot of clicking the refresh button toward the end of the season and at the conference tournaments. While that means the NCAA tournament selection show isn't particularly filled with suspense, the drama becomes a slow burn throughout the season. And at the end, if you don’t make the cut, there’s really nobody to blame. The big question: Could something similar work for college football, which is still undecided on a playoff model for 2026 and beyond? ? STATS DU JOUR BY THE NUMBERS Flamethrower. (Mary DeCicco/MLB Photos via Getty Images) ⚾️ 104.5 mph Padres relief ace Mason Miller threw the fastest postseason pitch ever recorded in Wednesday's win over the Cubs. That was part of a dominant outing from Miller, who struck out five straight batters and averaged 103 mph on 11 fastballs. ? 4,970-point gap This is wild: The point gap between world No. 2 Jannik Sinner (10,950 points) and world No. 3 Alexander Zverev (5,980) is bigger than the gap between Zverev and world No. 50 Marcos Giron (1,040). The Big Two: World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz (11,540 points) won the Japan Open in Tokyo earlier this week. So naturally, Sinner went out and won the China Open in Beijing the very next day. ? 10-day trip The Vikings are in the midst of a 10-day trip to Europe as they become the first NFL team (and almost certainly not the last) to play consecutive games in two different countries outside of the U.S. After losing to the Steelers on Sunday in Dublin, Minnesota made the short trip over to London to spend the week preparing for Sunday's game vs. the Browns. ⚽️ 52 goals in 50 matches Erling Haaland scored twice in Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Monaco, giving him an astonishing 52 goals in 50 Champions League matches. Just how incredible is that? The Norwegian striker has now outscored nine teams — yes, nine entire teams — for goals in their first 50 Champions League matches. ? BOOMER SOONER QB UNIVERSITY (Jay Biggerstaff/Getty Images) With Dillon Gabriel set to start in Week 5 for the Browns, nearly a decade’s worth of Oklahoma QBs are now starters in the NFL. Consider this: Every Sooners QB who started the majority of games each season from 2015-2023 is now an NFL starter. That's six different players and nearly 19% of the league’s starters. Buccaneers: Baker Mayfield (2015-17) Cardinals: Kyler Murray (2018) Eagles: Jalen Hurts (2019) Saints: Spencer Rattler (2020-21) Bears: Caleb Williams (2021) Browns: Gabriel (2022-23) Sign of the times: In addition to all six QBs being former Sooners, they're also all former college transfers. Mayfield (from Texas Tech), Murray (from Texas A&M) and Hurts (from Alabama) finished their careers at OU; Rattler (to South Carolina) and Williams (to USC) began their careers at OU; and Gabriel (from UCF, to Oregon) arrived and departed via the transfer portal. ? GRAND FINALE WNBA TRIVIA (Yahoo Sports) The Aces will be seeking their third championship in four years when the WNBA Finals get underway this weekend. Question: Who did they beat in the 2022 and 2023 Finals? Hint: Two states that share a border. Answer at the bottom. ? FANTASY BASKETBALL HIGH SCORE: A NEW WAY TO PLAY (Yahoo Sports) Introducing High Score, the new default Yahoo Fantasy Basketball format for the 2025-26 NBA season. How it works: Managers draft 10 players (down from the standard 13) and start six per week. Only each starter's highest single-game score counts toward the final tally. When you bench a player, any points they scored before being benched won’t count toward your weekly total. Once you put them back in, only the points they score after rejoining your lineup will count. (Yahoo Sports) Simplified scoring: High Score focuses on five core stats, while removing turnovers from the equation. Each stat is scored in whole numbers, so you don't have to worry about decimal points or managing 8-9 categories to earn a W. Points = 1 Rebounds = 1 Assists = 2 Blocks = 3 Steals = 3 The NBA season tips off in less than three weeks! Join or create a High Score league today. The series introduced Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and their friends, who became international figures through newspapers, television specials, books, and more. Gruden has scored multiple legal wins as he tries to keep the proceedings from happening behind closed doors. ⚾️ WILD CARD ROUND A LEGEND IS BORN IN THE BRONX Have a night, Cam! (Ishika Samant/Getty Images) Entering Thursday night, teams that won Game 1 of the reformatted Wild Card Round were a perfect 15-0 in those series. That included the Tigers and Cubs, who won their respective Game 3s earlier in the day to join the Dodgers in the Divisional Round. Tigers 6, Guardians 3 … Cleveland’s MLB-worst championship drought (since 1948) continues. Cubs 3, Padres 1 … Chicago's first playoff series victory since 2017. Then came the nightcap: The Yankees broke that 0-for-15 streak with a 4-0 victory over the Red Sox, making them the first team to lose Game 1 and still advance out of the Wild Card Round since the playoff format was changed in 2022. How'd they do it? Cam Schlittler. The rookie hurler (who grew up a Red Sox fan) pitched the best game of his life on the biggest stage of his life, etching his name in Yankees-Red Sox lore. His line: 8 IP 5 H 0 ER 0 BB 12 K How good is that? It's unprecedented. Schlittler is the first pitcher in MLB playoff history with 8+ IP, 12+ K, 0 R and 0 BB in a game. We're talking about one of the most dominant outings ever… and he did it in his 15th career start! In a winner-take-all game! Against the team that made him fall in love with baseball as a kid! Sports, man. The Yankees' clubhouse celebration. (Ishika Samant/Getty Images) From Yahoo Sports' Jake Mintz: After the revelry of the clubhouse celebration, Schlittler, soaked in booze and looking for his parents, strolled into the subterranean tunnel that connects the bowels of Yankee Stadium. A stream of Yankees players, friends and family members strode past on their way out to the field. Schlittler craned his neck over the throng, the team’s novelty wrestling championship belt draped over his shoulder. As Yankees hurler Max Fried walked past, he turned to Schlittler and said, "Dude, you can put the belt on." Schlittler grinned. He didn't need to. Everybody already knew who’d won the night. ? CLASS OF 2026 NFL MOCK DRAFT 1.0 (Yahoo Sports) Our first 2026 NFL Mock Draft is here and it features an edge rusher at the top and four QBs in the top 10. ? ON THE RISE INSIDE VANDERBILT'S ATHLETIC AWAKENING (Matthew Maxey/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) The narrative around the SEC's only private school has changed in ways that are most apparent through the lens of football. From Yahoo Sports' Dan Wolken: When Vanderbilt visits No. 10 Alabama on Saturday, it will do so as the 16th-ranked team in the AP poll, led by a 24-year-old QB who started his career at a junior college and New Mexico State — an anomaly unto itself at an academically elite school that accepted a record-low 4.7% of applicants this year. But the larger story of Vanderbilt's turn in the national spotlight goes beyond Diego Pavia and even the football program, whose 5-0 start to this season has been framed by just-finished construction projects in both end zones that has turned an aging, below-standard football stadium into a palace. For decades, Vanderbilt supporters and alumni wondered why their school couldn’t be like Duke or Stanford or even Northwestern, whose football highs eclipsed anything the Commodores ever experienced. And yet, as college sports transitioned into a semi-professional era, it’s Vanderbilt that has emerged in many ways as a model of athletic success on a campus where elite academics have always led the way. "The landscape was dramatically starting to shift, and we kept saying, 'Well, it's time to lean in,'" said athletics director Candice Lee, a women’s basketball star in the late 1990s. "When other people might be lamenting how come it couldn’t be the way it used to be, I just think it created this unique moment where we could actually use this to our advantage to create clarity for ourselves. Maybe some people wouldn’t have expected that.” Why would they, when Vanderbilt had never done anything like it before? ⚾️ FALL CLASSIC WORLD SERIES TRIVIA (Carmen Mandato/Getty Images) The Yankees (27) and Dodgers (8) have by far the most World Series titles of the remaining eight MLB playoff teams. Answer at the bottom. ⚽️ PAY TO PLAY KLOPP: U.S. YOUTH SOCCER TOO EXPENSIVE Boys play soccer outside the stadium ahead of an MLS match between Inter Miami and New York Red Bulls. (Kena Betancur/AFP via Getty Images) Count former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp (now head of global soccer for Red Bull) among those who believe America's increasingly expensive and inaccessible youth sports ecosystem is a glaring problem that needs to be addressed. Klopp, via The Athletic ($): “Youth football can be expensive. So that makes no sense at all to get the best talents. We all know that the best players [in the world] are not coming from the richest areas. I think the last one [best player in the world at the time] who was rich before he started playing was Kaka, if I am right. So this part of motivation is essential.” “That is what tennis was 50 years ago. It was a rich person’s game, more or less. Buying a racket wasn’t possible. Then it started in Germany with Boris Becker. All of a sudden, clubs opened, courts opened. In my village, my dad founded the tennis club and these kinds of things started and everybody could play tennis.” Chasing dreams: This echoes what former USMNT star Clint Dempsey said earlier this year, noting that his family went into debt to help him make it, and that he believes it must be “made easier for people who are less fortunate to have the chance to go chase their dreams.” Amen. In today's edition: NFL parity, Yesavage powers Blue Jays win, Aces take 2-0 WNBA Finals lead, AP poll madness, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ? ICYMI HEADLINES ⚾️ Rangers replace Bochy: The Rangers are hiring Skip Schumaker as their next manager. The former Marlins skipper spent the 2025 season as a special advisor to Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young. ⚽️ Philly secures the Shield: The Philadelphia Union (20 wins, 6 draws, 7 losses) clinched the MLS Supporters' Shield (best record) on Saturday with a game to spare. Quite the accomplishment for a club that didn't even make the playoffs last year. ? Back on top: Brazil's Alex Pereira obliterated Russia's Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 320, knocking him out just 80 seconds into their bout to reclaim the light heavyweight title that he lost seven months ago to… Ankalaev. ? The Final 8: Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, William Byron, Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott, Chase Briscoe and Joey Logano advanced to the semifinal round of the NASCAR playoffs following Sunday's road course race in Charlotte. ? Sanchez hospitalized, arrested: Former Jets QB and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was stabbed on Saturday in Indianapolis, and then arrested at the hospital for allegedly (and drunkenly) starting the confrontation by attacking a 69-year-old truck driver. He is in stable condition. ? WEEK 5 ANY GIVEN SUNDAY The Patriots went into Buffalo on Sunday night and handed the Bills their first loss. (Adrian Kraus/AP Photo) The 1972 Dolphins — the only NFL team to complete a perfect season — are popping champagne earlier than usual this year. No more unbeatens: With the Eagles and Bills both losing on Sunday, the NFL has no undefeated teams just five weeks into the season — the earliest that's happened since 2014. Meanwhile, only one team (the Jets) remains winless. You want parity? You got it. You want comebacks? You got that, too. Five teams climbed out of double-digit holes to win on Sunday, just one shy of the all-time single-week record. The Titans overcame an 18-point deficit to beat the Cardinals, 22-21 The Panthers overcame a 17-point deficit to beat the Dolphins, 27-24 The Broncos overcame a 14-point deficit to beat the Eagles, 21-17 The Saints overcame an 11-point deficit to beat the Giants, 26-14 The Commanders overcame a 10-point deficit to beat the Chargers, 27-10 Elsewhere: Baker Mayfield outdueled Sam Darnold in a battle of former first-round QB castoffs … Drake Maye and Stefon Diggs balled out on "SNF" … The Ravens fell to 1-4 after getting smoked by the Texans … The Vikings beat the Browns in London. Sunday recap: Scoreboard | Winners and losers | Fantasy notebook ⚾️ ALDS YESAVAGE, BLUE JAYS TAKE CONTROL (Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images) The Blue Jays took a 2-0 ALDS lead over the Yankees on Sunday behind a gem from rookie Trey Yesavage, who began the season in Single-A. From Yahoo Sports' Jake Mintz: The first start of Trey Yesavage's 2025 season took place in front of a paying crowd of 327 people. Two tickets, according to the Jupiter Hammerheads' Instagram page, could be purchased for the low, low sum of $15. And considering how Yesavage pitched that night, it was probably a good thing that so few ball fans rolled through the turnstiles at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. Making his minor-league debut for the Low-A Florida State League Dunedin Blue Jays, the 2024 first-rounder walked six hitters across 3 2/3 disjointed innings, surrendering just one hit alongside two unearned runs. Nothing about that inauspicious performance could have foretold how Yesavage's campaign would unfurl. On Sunday, less than six months removed from that humdrum showing against the Hammerheads, Yesavage shined on a slightly bigger stage. With 44,764 souls packed into Toronto's Rogers Centre, the 22-year-old righty absolutely tyrannized the Yankees in Game 2 of the ALDS. Facing the sport's best lineup this regular season in just his fourth big-league start, Yesavage did not allow a single hit across 5 1/3 masterful innings. Leaning on a dastardly split-finger fastball, he punched out 11 and walked just one. He struck out the side in the third and the fourth. The Yankees swung at 31 of his 78 pitches and whiffed 18 times. The Blue Jays' offense backed up his brilliance by scoring 11 runs before the end of the fourth inning. "I was just doing what I feel comfortable doing, throwing splits late in the count, and it just so happens they were swinging and missing at a bunch of them and chasing them down," Yesavage said postgame. "I didn't change anything." Where it stands: The Yankees are the 72nd team in the division series era (since 1994) to lose the first two games in a best-of-five series. Only eight of the previous 71 rattled off three straight victories to swipe the series. The most recent team to do it? The Yankees, back in 2017 against Cleveland. Meanwhile, in Seattle… Jorge Polanco (2 HR) and the Mariners beat the Tigers, 3-2, on Sunday to even the series and notch their first home playoff win in 24 years. ? THROUGH THE LENS THE WORLD IN PHOTOS (Ian Maule/Getty Images) ?? Las Vegas, Nevada — The Aces have taken a commanding 2-0 lead over the Mercury in the WNBA Finals, following up Friday's narrow Game 1 victory with a decisive 91-78 win on Sunday. The best-of-seven series heads to Phoenix for Game 3 on Wednesday. Historic performance: Aces guard Jackie Young led the way in Game 2, scoring 21 of her 32 points in the third quarter — the most ever scored in a single quarter in WNBA Finals history. (Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images) ??????? London, England — Chelsea took down Liverpool, 2-1, on a stoppage-time goal from 18-year-old Estêvão Willian, sending Stamford Bridge into delirium and sending the Reds to their third straight loss across all competitions. Elsewhere: Manchester City's win over Brentford was the 250th of Pep Guardiola's career in just his 349th game, making him the fastest manager in Premier League history to reach that milestone. (Kym Illman/Getty Images) ?? Singapore, Singapore — McLaren clinched its second straight Constructors' Championship at the Singapore Grand Prix, marking the first time they've captured consecutive titles since winning four straight from 1988-91. What to watch: Attention can now be turned solely to the individual title race between McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who are separated by just 22 points with six races left. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, lurking in third, would need a miracle to win his fifth straight title. (Lintao Zhang/Getty Images) ?? Beijing, China — Amanda Anisimova beat Linda Nosková, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2, to win the China Open and clinch her second WTA 1000 title of the year. Points leaders: Anisimova (5,908 points) has overtaken Coco Gauff (5,574) as No. 3 in the WTA Race, trailing only Iga Świątek (8,153) and Aryna Sabalenka (9,610). ? TOP 25 AP POLL: PRESEASON VS. NOW (Yahoo Sports) Texas and Penn State began the season as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the AP poll. Six weeks later, they're both unranked after the Longhorns fell to Florida and the Nittany Lions lost to previously winless UCLA.* Preseason vs. now: With Clemson also unranked, three of the top four teams in the preseason poll have fallen out entirely. Texas (now unranked) Penn State (unranked) Ohio State (No. 1) Clemson (unranked) Georgia (No. 10) Notre Dame (No. 16) Oregon (No. 3) Alabama (No. ? LSU (No. 11) Miami (No. 2) *Historic upset: Teams to enter 0-4 (or worse) and defeat a Top 10 opponent in the last 70 years: Tulane in 1958, UTEP in 1985 and UCLA on Saturday. The Bruins were 24.5-point underdogs! The level of disaster here is unfathomable for Penn State. Members phkrause Posted October 8, 2025 Author Members Posted October 8, 2025 ? Good morning! LeBron James teased the "decision of all decisions" today. Is he announcing his retirement? Is it an ad for Amazon Prime Day? We'll find out at noon. In today's edition: NHL title odds, Phillies and Cubs on the brink, Bill Belichick's failings, Women's Champions League kicks off, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ? PUCK DROP THE NHL IS BACK (Mallory Bielecki/Yahoo Sports) The NHL returns to action tonight, as the puck drops on the league's 109th season. Preseason title favorites: Edmonton and Vegas open as co-favorites to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup. Oilers (+800 at BetMGM): Edmonton's last two seasons have ended with heartbreaking losses in the Stanley Cup Final, but at least they begin this season with some good news: Three-time MVP Connor McDavid, entering his walk year, signed a two-year extension to remain in the orange and blue. Golden Knights (+800): On the plus side, Vegas added superstar Mitch Marner, who scored 102 points last year with Toronto (fifth-most in the league). But they did lose defensive stalwart Alex Pietrangelo, 35, who's stepping away from hockey due to a lingering hip injury. Hurricanes (+850): Carolina has been a picture of stability under head coach Rod Brind'Amour, reaching the playoffs in all seven years of his tenure, including two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals in the last three years. Avalanche (+850): Speaking of stability, how about eight straight playoff appearances under head coach Jared Bednar? That's tied for the second-longest streak in the league. Stars (+900): Dallas has to break through eventually, right? Three straight losses in the Western Conference Finals led to head coach Pete DeBoer's firing. Maybe Glen Gulutzan, returning after a brief stint at the helm (2011-13), will have better luck. Honorable mention: Conspicuously absent from the list above are the two-time defending champion Panthers, just outside the top five at +1100 due to a pair of unfortunate injuries to star winger Matthew Tkachuk (out until December recovering from offseason surgery) and captain Aleksander Barkov (out all season after tearing his ACL in training camp). Season outlook: Winter Games: For the first time since Sochi 2014, the NHL will send its players to the Winter Olympics. The league will pause play from Feb. 6-25, and anticipation for Milano Cortina 2026 is through the roof after the success of last year's Four Nations Face-Off. Coaching carousel: Nine of 32 teams have a new head coach: Ducks (Joel Quenneville), Rangers (Mike Sullivan), Penguins (Dan Muse), Flyers (Rick Tocchet), Canucks (Adam Foote), Blackhawks (Jeff Blashill), Kraken (Lane Lambert), Bruins (Marco Sturm) and Stars (Glen Gulutzan). Ovi's last dance? Alexander Ovechkin made history last season when he broke Wayne Gretzky's goals record. This season, the 40-year-old is playing on the final year of his contract and it's unclear whether he'll sign another one. ? SNAPSHOTS THROUGH THE LENS (Emilee Chinn/Getty Images) Philadelphia — The Dodgers survived a late bullpen collapse to beat the Phillies, 4-3, and take a 2-0 lead in their NLDS, which they can clinch at home tomorrow. Philly has lost seven of its last eight playoff games and is at risk of being remembered most for what it never accomplished. Stars go cold: The Phillies' "Big Five" of Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Nick Castellanos (making a combined $927 million) have gone 6-for-35 with 13 strikeouts in the NLDS. Jackson Chourio celebrates his 3-run homer. (Michael Reaves/Getty Images) Milwaukee — The Brewers continued firing on all cylinders, bashing 11 hits, including three homers, in a 7-3 win over the Cubs to take a 2-0 series lead. Milwaukee will try to complete the sweep tomorrow in Chicago. Dominant bullpen: After Milwaukee's opener gave up three runs in 1.2 innings, a parade of six relievers combined for 7.1 shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and just one hit allowed. (Mike Carlson/Getty Images) Jacksonville — The Jaguars erased an early 14-0 deficit to beat the Chiefs, 31-28, in a "Monday Night Football" thriller that ended with one of the strangest game-winning touchdowns you'll ever see. Jacksonville's hot start has them at 4-1 for the first time since 2007. The week of the comeback: The Jags were the sixth team this week to win after trailing by double digits (Titans, Panthers, Broncos, Saints, Commanders), tying the NFL record for the most ever in a single week. (Stacy Revere/Getty Images) Fort Worth, Texas — No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg scored 10 points in just 14 minutes in his preseason debut, flashing his athleticism, range and court vision in the Mavs' 106-89 win over the Thunder. Looking ahead: Flagg will make his official NBA debut on Oct. 22 (15 days from now) in a tantalizing matchup against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. ? CHAPEL BILL BELICHICK'S TAR HEELS ARE A LAUGHINGSTOCK (Julio Aguilar/Getty Images) Bill Belichick's failings at North Carolina underline one thing: He thinks he's bigger than the job. Bill Belichick and the unaccountable band of cronies and flunkies that followed him to North Carolina have failed to grasp one fundamental principle of college sports. Even for the most successful coach in the history of the NFL, the program and the players always come first. That means you don't bring the petty feuds that followed you from the Patriots into the building. It means you don't fly off to Nantucket with your girlfriend during the bye week when your team is failing on practically every front. It means that when you gut a roster from the previous regime to bring in your own people, you better actually upgrade the talent instead of throwing darts at the transfer portal like it doesn't matter because you don't believe the competition is worthy of trading X for O with your genius. Belichick has failed on every account because those around him either don't understand the job or don't take it seriously, and as a result they have reached the midway point of the season as one of the biggest laughingstocks in the recent history of the sport. Sure, North Carolina fans and boosters were fired up when Belichick arrived last December to begin a unique experiment that had the potential to work if done correctly. But interpreting that excitement as a mandate to replace the Tar Heel brand with Belichick, his various trademarks and Jordon Hudson's film projects is a fundamental misreading of the job he took. Bill, here's some free advice: At North Carolina, they don't care about you enough to put up with all this. You're not one of them. They merely hired you to do a job. And if you don't want to do it, rest assured they will find someone else who will. (Lance King/Getty Images) Maybe Monday's kerfuffle will be a wake-up call. It started with a social media post from Inside Carolina, which claimed that North Carolina's official accounts had not promoted anything about former Tar Heel QB Drake Maye's fantastic performance in a win over the Bills on Sunday night because the social media staff was under a directive not to post anything related to the Patriots. It's a believable story for two reasons. For one, North Carolina's official account on X/Twitter posted video of Maye's highlights after the Inside Carolina story started blowing up. And secondly, Belichick admitted a couple weeks ago that Patriots scouts were not allowed in North Carolina's building. "It's clear I'm not welcome there around their facility," he told reporters. "And so they're not welcome at ours. It's pretty simple." There has rarely been a clearer example of a college coach publicly and proudly putting his own ego ahead of his players' interests. And when you see something like that and realize how narrowly Belichick and his inner circle view the job they have, all their other mistakes make perfect sense. Making Steve Belichick the defensive coordinator and Brian Belichick the defensive backs coach? Good for the Belichicks, bad for North Carolina. Making Matt Lombardi [son of Tar Heels GM Mike Lombardi] the quarterbacks coach? Good for the Lombardis, bad for North Carolina. Skipping town during the bye week after getting blown out by UCF only for photographers to catch Belichick and Hudson holding hands on the boardwalk in Nantucket? Unnecessary, unprofessional and wholly unserious. (Peyton Williams/Getty Images) The genius act doesn't work in college football. It never has and never will. Nobody understood that better than Nick Saban, who famously asked former Alabama athletics director Mal Moore on the flight from Miami to Tuscaloosa whether he thought Alabama had just hired the best coach in the country. When Moore said yes, Saban immediately corrected him. "Well, you didn't — I'm nothing without my players," Saban said, according to a 2015 biography by Monte Burke. "But you did just hire a helluva recruiter." This is a talent procurement game, and every bit of effort that is not deployed in the service of getting great players to North Carolina makes Belichick's résumé irrelevant and diminishes his legacy as a coach. At some point, before it's too late, somebody in Chapel Hill needs to knock on his door and make that crystal clear. So far, every moment of the Belichick experience has been about him, his girlfriend, his family and his friends. That's not going to work. It can be about only the players and the program. And if Belichick doesn't understand that, it won't be his to captain for very long. ⚽️ LEAGUE PHASE WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE KICKS OFF (Kristian Skeie/UEFA via Getty Images) The 25th edition of the UEFA Women's Champions League kicks off today across Europe, where 18 teams begin the League Phase portion of the new-look tournament and Arsenal begin their title defense. In today's edition: Win or go home, NHL opening night, NFL power rankings, WNBA Finals numbers, UFL unveils new teams, NBA on NBC is back, and more. Yahoo Sports AM is written by Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy. Let's sports... ? ICYMI HEADLINES ? NHL Opening Night: The Panthers beat the Blackhawks, 3-2, after raising their second straight Stanley Cup banner; Nathan MacKinnon became the leading scorer in Avalanche history in a 4-1 win over the Kings; the Penguins blanked the Rangers, 3-0, to spoil former head coach Mike Sullivan's debut in New York. ? Flacco to the Bengals: With Joe Burrow out until at least December and Jake Browning proving to be an inadequate replacement, the Bengals (2-3) traded for Browns QB Joe Flacco in hopes of saving their season. ? LeBron's "Second Decision": LeBron James' cryptic tease about making the "decision of all decisions" (which many speculated would involve his retirement) turned out to be nothing more than a liquor ad. Extremely cringe on his part. ? McGregor suspended: The UFC suspended Connor McGregor for 18 months after he violated the whereabouts policy under its anti-doping program. With his suspension retroactive to his last missed test, the 37-year-old won't be eligible to return to competition until March 2026. ? Tatum's new role: While Jayson Tatum spends the upcoming season rehabbing his ruptured Achilles, the Celtics star will also serve as Duke's Chief Basketball Officer, acting as a consultant to his alma mater in a role created specifically for him. ⚾️ MLB PLAYOFFS WIN OR GO HOME Aaron Judge. 3-run shot. Don't count out the Yanks just yet. (Al Bello/Getty Images) Cherish today, baseball fans. After six months of jam-packed MLB schedules, this is the last day all year with more than two games. All four division series will be played back-to-back-to-back-to-back starting in the mid-afternoon — and all four are elimination games. Mariners at Tigers | 3pm ET, FS1 Seattle put Detroit on the ropes with Tuesday's 8-4 victory, taking a 2-1 series lead to move within a win of their first trip to the ALCS since 2001. Tigers righty Casey Mize, an All-Star who led the team with 14 wins this season, takes the bump with the season on the line. Right place, right time: MVP candidate Cal Raleigh hit his first homer of the postseason, and 61st of the year, to a fan wearing a custom "Dump 61 Here" shirt in a nod to Raleigh's "Big Dumper" nickname. Some things are just meant to be. Brewers at Cubs | 5pm, TBS Milwaukee has more than looked the part of baseball's best team so far in these playoffs, taking a 2-0 lead over Chicago with an aggregate score of 16-6. Can the Cubs scratch out a win at home tonight, or will their first postseason appearance in five years end in an NLDS sweep? 21-year-old phenom: Is Jackson Chourio having the best start to a playoff career ever? In five games including last year, he's 10-for-18 (.556) with more home runs (3) than strikeouts (2). Against the Cubs, he’s 5-for-7 with a double, a homer and six RBIs. Blue Jays at Yankees | 7pm, FS1 New York staved off elimination with Tuesday's comeback 9-6 victory, but must win again tonight to send the series back to Toronto. Can rookie hurler Cam Schlittler deliver another magical performance after last week's historic outing against Boston? All Rise: Aaron Judge, now batting a cool .500 through six playoff games, came up clutch yet again with a game-tying 3-run homer on Tuesday night. That was his sixth career postseason home run when facing elimination, tied with David Ortiz for the most in MLB history. Phillies at Dodgers | 9pm, TBS The defending champs are 4-0 so far this postseason, including two road wins over the mighty Phillies despite Shohei Ohtani going 1-for-9 with six strikeouts. With a victory tonight at home, they'll reach their seventh NLCS in the past 10 seasons (!!). Starting pitchers: The Dodgers will hand the ball to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has a career postseason ERA of 2.84 in five starts. The Phillies are going with Aaron Nola, who's had a great career for them but was pretty terrible this season (6.01 ERA) and has a career playoff ERA of 4.02 in 10 starts. ? WEEK 6 NFL POWER RANKINGS (Joseph Raines/Yahoo Sports) The Lions have ridden an NFL-best four-game winning streak to the top of our latest power rankings. But not far behind them are the Buccaneers and Colts — surprising newcomers to the top five. Up and down: Biggest risers: No. 4 Buccaneers (up 5), No. 5 Colts (up 5), No. 6 Broncos (up 5), No. 16 Patriots (up 5) Biggest fallers: No. 13 Chargers (down 8), No. 11 Rams (down 7), No. 14 Seahawks (down 6), No. 19 Ravens (down 5), No. 23 Cardinals (down 5) ? STATS DU JOUR WNBA FINALS: BY THE NUMBERS A'ja Wilson guards Alyssa Thomas in Game 2. (Jeff Bottari/NBAE via Getty Images) The Aces take a 2-0 lead into Phoenix tonight for Game 3 of the WNBA Finals (8pm ET, ESPN), where the Mercury will try to stem the bleeding in the league's first-ever best-of-seven series. 20 and 10 A'ja Wilson put up 21 points and 10 rebounds in Game 1 followed by 28 points and 14 rebounds in Game 2, marking the second time the Aces center has posted consecutive 20-10 games in her WNBA Finals career. No other player in league history has accomplished that even once. 1.9 million viewers The opening game of this year's Finals drew 1.9 million viewers (and peaked at 2.5 million), making it the most-watched Game 1 since the league's inaugural season. Only that 1997 championship, which was a winner-take-all Game 1, had more people watching. 3-1 at home The Mercury face an uphill battle against a team that has beaten them five out of six times this year, but they can at least take solace in the fact that they're 3-1 at home this postseason, while the Aces are just 1-2 on the road. 57 bench points One area where the Aces have a clear advantage is their bench, which has outscored the Mercury's bench, 57-24, through two games. Six-time All-Star Jewell Loyd has been the MVP of that unit, scoring 27 points so far in the Finals. 391 assists Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas etched her name in the history books on Sunday with the 391st assist of her postseason career, passing Courtney Vandersloot (390) for the most ever. Aces guard Chelsea Gray, with 20 assists in these Finals alone, is right on her tail with 380. ? SPRING FOOTBALL NEW-LOOK UFL UNVEILS TEAMS, STADIUMS (UFL) How does spring football plan on getting bigger? By getting smaller. From Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee: For more than 40 years now, visionaries, investors and the occasional future president have attempted to make spring football work in the United States.
