Extreme weather

At least 95 people have been killed by severe flash floods in Spain, according to authorities on Wednesday, as emergency responders scramble to find dozens of missing people. In the worst-affected region of Valencia, 92 people were killed and around 1,200 are thought to still be trapped, local officials said. Separately, Taiwan's largest storm since 1996 made landfall today with heavy rains and damaging winds equivalent to a Category 3 Atlantic hurricane. The storm, known as Typhoon Kong-rey, has killed at least one person and injured dozens of others.

Storm Éowyn

Storm Éowyn is advancing toward Ireland and the United Kingdom in what could be one of the most severe storms the region has seen in years. The "bomb" cyclone is expected to unleash gusty winds up to 80 miles per hour and heavy rain on Ireland today and Saturday. Met Éireann, the Irish Meteorological Service, has issued red warnings, its highest alert level, for wind for much of the country. The UK's Meteorological Office has also placed some areas under red wind warnings for the first time since 2011. Across Scotland's central belt, snowfall could reach somewhere between 6 to 10 inches. All schools in both Ireland and Northern Ireland will be closed today and public transportation will not be running.

The race to rescue survivors

Nepal and China have resumed rescue operations in areas devastated by flash flooding, after a pause sparked by fears a barrier lake could unleash another deluge. Residents in threatened areas were seen moving to higher ground, but officials on both sides of the border have since said the danger has receded. At least 489 people have died in Nepal, while dozens of Americans and other foreign nationals are among at least 1,300 people still unaccounted for.
