Athletes new to the Olympic stage (Canada's Macklin Celebrini) and seasoned vets (USA's Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin) alike are fueling their countries' gold-medal hopes as the 2026 Winter Olympics draw near, running Feb. 6-22.

  • ?? Here are some hot storylines to watch in next month's cold-weather games in Italy, per AP:

Can't-miss athletes...

  • ⛷️ Two of the most decorated Alpine skiers in history, 41-year-old Vonn and 30-year-old Shiffrin, opened the World Cup season in dominant form — raising U.S. hopes of a golden run.
  • ? Eileen Gu is back in freestyle skiing, as is Chloe Kim in snowboarding.
  • ? NHL players are back on Olympic ice for the first time since 2014 — so watch for the likes of Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid.

New events...

  • ? Ski mountaineering will make its Olympic debut, while skeleton — a head-first, high-speed sledding sport — has a new mixed team event.
  • Luge has added women's doubles, and large hill ski jumping has added women's and men's super team events.

Russia controversy...

  • ?? Some sports federations have been deciding whether to let Russians compete as neutral athletes — but only after an independent review ensures they have not publicly supported the war in Ukraine and are not affiliated with Russia's military.
  • ?? Nine Russians and Belarusians have been approved to compete as neutral athletes as of early December, per the BBC.

Construction woes...

  • ? New hockey arenas in Milan are not yet finished — and the main rink will unexpectedly be three feet shorter than NHL standard.

?? What's next: Team USA's hockey rosters will be revealed on NBC's "Today Show" during the 8 a.m. ET hour tomorrow.

  • ?? 19-year-old phenom Macklin Celebrini, meanwhile, made Team Canada amid a fantastic season with the NHL's San Jose Sharks.
  • He could become Canada's youngest-ever men's player in an Olympic tournament with NHLers.

How Olympians persevere
Illustration of speed skater.

In a few weeks, more than 300 elite athletes will travel to Italy to represent America in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

  • AP sports writer Stephen Wade interviewed some of the athletes, along with a leading sports psychologist who supports them, to gauge how they think about success and failure.

Why it matters: These Olympians' approaches to competition, pressure and disappointment contain lessons all of us can apply to our lives. Here are 3 key takeaways:

  1. Savor the moment. "Most of the athletes who come through Team USA will not win a gold medal. That's the reality of elite sport," Emily Clark, a clinical psychologist with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, told AP. The mindset shift required is redefining success to focus on the process and the daily work, rather than just the final result. We can apply this at work or at home and enjoy our lives instead of constantly keeping score.
  2. ? Talk to yourself. Elite skier Lindsey Vonn will race in Italy in her fifth Olympics. At 41, she's coming off nearly six years in retirement and will be racing on a knee made of titanium. One part of how she competes is by talking to herself — and she says she does it in two ways: by talking out loud to herself at the starting gate and by writing herself messages on her skis. Don't be shy about posting messages on the bathroom mirror, or giving yourself a pep talk out loud when you wake up to seize the day.
  3. ? Get serious about sleep. "Sleep is the cornerstone of healthy performance," Clark tells AP. It's not always easy to stick to a sleep regimen, but if and when we can, Clark suggests the following for her athletes — and the rest of us: no caffeine after 3 p.m., mitigate stress before bedtime, schedule sleep at about the same time daily, sleep in a dark room and get 7-9 hours.

With the 2026 Winter Olympics starting Friday (NBC and Peacock, 2 p.m. ET), athletes from around the world are settling into the Olympic Village, Axios' Ina Fried writes from Milan.

  • The Olympic Village in Milan is only home to a portion of the athletes in this year's Games, with others staying closer to their mountain events.
  • In Cortina, 1,400 athletes are staying in specially outfitted trailers. Hotels are being repurposed in two other mountain areas.

⛸️ Zoom in: For American speedskater Casey Dawson, these Olympics are an opportunity to "go outside the village, check out the city, get to mingle with all the other athletes in different countries."

  • That wasn't possible during the COVID-era Beijing games.

One of the first stops for Team USA athletes when they get to Italy is getting outfitted by Ralph Lauren, Axios' Ina Fried writes from Milan.

  • The process involves quickly tailoring outfits for opening and closing ceremonies, as well as other clothes for wearing around the Olympic Village.

This year's 10-piece outfit for the opening ceremony features a long "winter-white" wool coat with wooden toggles, a flag-emblazoned wool turtleneck, along with wool trousers and boots.

  • Ralph Lauren will suit up around 300 Olympic and Paralympic athletes in Milan, along with around 780 staff, coaches and trainers for Team USA.

⛸️ The Milano Cortina Winter Olympics open today in Italy and run 17 days, through Feb. 22. The three-hour opening ceremony begins at 2 p.m. ET, with a primetime encore at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

MILAN, Italy — The first Olympic match at Milan's brand new Milano Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena went off without a hitch yesterday, with the Italian women's team beating France 4-1, Axios' Ina Fried reports.

  • 🏗️ Construction delays brushed up against this week's deadline. But most in the crowd couldn't tell just how close a shave it was: The arena isn't fully finished, but the play on the ice was stellar.

🇺🇸 In a separate women's match played at the smaller Rho Arena, Team USA handily defeated the Czech Republic, 5-1.

Winter Olympics Begin

The 2026 Winter Olympics officially open tonight in Milan, marking Italy’s third time hosting the Winter Games. The ceremony takes place at San Siro Stadium with 2,916 athletes from 92 national Olympic committees, including 232 from the US. The live ceremony begins at 2 pm ET (8 pm local time) on NBC and Peacock.

The Milan-Cortina Games span nearly 8,500 square miles across northern Italy, combining Milan’s urban arenas with Cortina d’Ampezzo’s alpine venues more than 250 road miles apart. It’s the first dual-host Olympics, promoting sustainability and reuse with nearly 90% existing or temporary venues. The closing ceremony is set for Verona, about 100 miles east of Milan.

The Games run through Feb. 22, featuring 16 sports, including ski mountaineering—the first new standalone Olympic sport since skeleton’s 2002 return. Athletes will compete for 116 gold medals worth about $2,300 each, more than double their 2024 value. The Paralympics follow March 6-15. Follow medal counts here and top storylines here.

MILAN, Italy — A day that began with Lindsey Vonn's painful screams after crashing in downhill skiing ended with cheers of jubilation as Team USA edged out Japan for gold in team figure skating, Axios' Ina Fried writes.

  • Vonn, 41, was attempting a comeback despite a ruptured ACL but crashed shortly into her run and had to be airlifted to a hospital with a broken leg.

Fellow American Breezy Johnson took the downhill gold, the first American to medal at this year's Winter Games.

In figure skating, American Ilia Malinin clinched the team title for the U.S. after landing a backflip on one foot.

  • Malinin is nicknamed the "Quad God" for his signature jump — a quadruple axel, a move that only he has completed in competition.

⛸️ Worthy of your time: The Atlantic's Sally Jenkins writes (gift link) in a profile, "The Man Who Broke Physics," that Malinin represents an evolutionary leap in sport, on the order of magnitude of Simone Biles and Michael Phelps.

Malinin's confidence would be insolent if his acrobatics weren't so astonishing. "I broke physics," he told me recently, only half-kidding during a conversation in the back hall of a practice rink in Leesburg, Virginia. "Now I think physics doesn't apply to me."

Today's events ... Medal count.
