AP sports writer Stephen Wade interviewed some of the athletes, along with a leading sports psychologist who supports them, to gauge how they think about success and failure. "Most of the athletes who come through Team USA will not win a gold medal. That's the reality of elite sport," Emily Clark, a clinical psychologist with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, told AP. The mindset shift required is redefining success to focus on the process and the daily work, rather than just the final result. One part of how she competes is by talking to herself — and she says she does it in two ways: by talking out loud to herself at the starting gate and by writing herself messages on her skis. The situation is serious enough that the International Olympic Committee is considering rotating the games among a permanent pool of suitable locations and holding them earlier in the season. Why this matters: Out of 93 mountain locations that currently have the winter sports infrastructure to host elite competition, only 52 should have the snow depth and sufficiently cold temperatures to be able to host a Winter Olympics in the 2050s, according to research conducted by University of Waterloo professor Daniel Scott and University of Innsbruck associate professor Robert Steiger that the IOC is using. The situation is bleaker for the Paralympic Winter Games, which are typically held at the same venues two weeks after the Winter Olympics conclude. The ceremony takes place at San Siro Stadium with 2,916 athletes from 92 national Olympic committees, including 232 from the US. The live ceremony begins at 2 pm ET (8 pm local time) on NBC and Peacock. The Milan-Cortina Games span nearly 8,500 square miles across northern Italy, combining Milan’s urban arenas with Cortina d’Ampezzo’s alpine venues more than 250 road miles apart. It’s the first dual-host Olympics, promoting sustainability and reuse with nearly 90% existing or temporary venues. The closing ceremony is set for Verona, about 100 miles east of Milan. Read more. What to know: Trump’s comment came after reporters on Friday asked U.S. athletes at a news conference how they feel representing the country during the Trump administration's actions. Hess replied that he had mixed emotions since he doesn't agree with the situation, and that he is in Milan competing on behalf of everyone who helped get him to the Games. “Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.,” he said. Hess was the latest and most prominent example of U.S. Olympians at the Games inviting online backlash with their words. Figure skater Amber Glenn said the LGBTQ+ community has had a hard time during the Trump administration.
