Members phkrause Posted January 15 Author Members Posted January 15 How Olympians persevere Illustration: Allie Carl/Axios In a few weeks, more than 300 elite athletes will travel to Italy to represent America in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. AP sports writer Stephen Wade interviewed some of the athletes, along with a leading sports psychologist who supports them, to gauge how they think about success and failure. Why it matters: These Olympians' approaches to competition, pressure and disappointment contain lessons all of us can apply to our lives. Here are 3 key takeaways: ✨ Savor the moment. "Most of the athletes who come through Team USA will not win a gold medal. That's the reality of elite sport," Emily Clark, a clinical psychologist with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, told AP. The mindset shift required is redefining success to focus on the process and the daily work, rather than just the final result. We can apply this at work or at home and enjoy our lives instead of constantly keeping score. ? Talk to yourself. Elite skier Lindsey Vonn will race in Italy in her fifth Olympics. At 41, she's coming off nearly six years in retirement and will be racing on a knee made of titanium. One part of how she competes is by talking to herself — and she says she does it in two ways: by talking out loud to herself at the starting gate and by writing herself messages on her skis. Don't be shy about posting messages on the bathroom mirror, or giving yourself a pep talk out loud when you wake up to seize the day. ? Get serious about sleep. "Sleep is the cornerstone of healthy performance," Clark tells AP. It's not always easy to stick to a sleep regimen, but if and when we can, Clark suggests the following for her athletes — and the rest of us: no caffeine after 3 p.m., mitigate stress before bedtime, schedule sleep at about the same time daily, sleep in a dark room and get 7-9 hours. Members phkrause Posted January 15 Author Members Posted January 15 The list of possible Winter Olympics host sites is shrinking because of climate change With the Earth warming at a record rate, the list of locales that could reliably host a Winter Games will shrink substantially in the coming years, according to researchers. The situation is serious enough that the International Olympic Committee is considering rotating the games among a permanent pool of suitable locations and holding them earlier in the season. Read more. Why this matters: Out of 93 mountain locations that currently have the winter sports infrastructure to host elite competition, only 52 should have the snow depth and sufficiently cold temperatures to be able to host a Winter Olympics in the 2050s, according to research conducted by University of Waterloo professor Daniel Scott and University of Innsbruck associate professor Robert Steiger that the IOC is using. The situation is bleaker for the Paralympic Winter Games, which are typically held at the same venues two weeks after the Winter Olympics conclude.
