Modern Slavery

In yesterdays news it was reported that a black couple by the name of Mark and Cynthia Pollard had held a white women as their Slave. They beat her , forced her to do work and threatened her life and the lives of her relatives if she didn't do a good job.

The Greensberg Pa. police arrested them for kidnapping and reported that the "slave" had injuries on all parts of her body and also a concussion. She had been held in slavery for 6 months before being rescued.

Slavery is ugly no matter what race.

Slavery is a hard thing, and I like Paul's measured counsel that if a person was a slave the gospel could make them free in their spirit. To each of us comes this choice. Will we sink beneath our circumstances, or rise above them? Here is a proclamation by a prominent black professor regarding slavery.

Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon Granted to

All Persons of European Descent

"Whereas, Europeans kept my forebears in bondage some three centuries toiling without pay,

Whereas, Europeans ignored the human rights pledges of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution,

Whereas, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments meant little more than empty words,

Therefore, Americans of European ancestry are guilty of great crimes against my ancestors and their progeny.

But, in the recognition Europeans themselves have been victims of various and sundry human rights violations to wit: the Norman Conquest, the Irish Potato Famine, Decline of the Hapsburg Dynasty, Napoleonic and Czarist adventurism, and gratuitous insults and speculations about the intelligence of Europeans of Polish descent,

I, Walter E. Williams, do declare full and general amnesty and pardon to all persons of European ancestry, for both their own grievances, and those of their forebears, against my people.

Therefore, from this day forward Americans of European ancestry can stand straight and proud knowing they are without guilt and thus obliged not to act like --- fools in their relationships with Americans of African ancestry."

I like this. The ability to smile at life goes much farther than sinking into bitterness.

Taylor ... As a Christian I completely agree. As far as legal issues go ... it is entirely different. If this was switched and a White person had taken a Black slave ... the penalty would have been much greater. It would have been called a hate crime. But since a White person was the victim ... it is just an "ordinary crime".

I was just surprised that it is still happening in today's society. Race is really not important to this issue I agree.

If the gifted professor had left off the last paragraph as listed above, I would have fully agreed with you, Olger. As it is it appears to be a well disguised effort at oneupmanship, though perhaps justified by the perpetrators of said poor behavior.

And really, Olger, it seems gratuitous by the professor to think said perpetrators would be acting?
