We don't talk about the lack of outreach to the Native Americans. There are now some great Bible Studies and other similar thing, yet for the most part Conferences, Churches and groups are silent when it comes to this unrelated people group..

In a matter of weeks I will be moving. So ... I will have to look into it. But I do have some Native American Indian heritage. So ... I am just naturally curious as to their needs.

I have a native american friend who is a pastor to native americans. He can tell you that.

1. The work is slow but not nearly as slow as when we do nothing. He has had a lot of success with his work. He is such a kind gentle man that people atomatically like him.

2. That there are many native americans who are not being reached in the USA but who need to be reached.

I have spent a weekend at a native american school not too far from the Grand Canyon. From what I could see, they were doing a great job with those kids.

They have so many needs spiritual and well things just to live. It is a sad state when you figure we send so much money and supplies overseas and well the people who were here first many of them do not even have running water or electricity just some of the things we take advantage of. And many of them do not even have decent medical facilities if any at all.

Having traveled out west quite a bit earlier in my years and talking with pastors who have tried to help native americans, it seems that their largest problems are:

* Unemployment (up to 30%)

* Decent public education

* Diabetes

* Alcoholism and intoxication

* decent work ethic

In *SOME* places where they have been allowed by the US government to put up casinos, an income has been supplied to the reservation to make improvements to their living conditions and provide a decent employment.

For native americans, Christianity does not have as much a place as being one with nature and joining one's self to the spirit of the natural world. The concept of Christianity does not make as much sense as it does to the "white man/paleface".

To work with the native americans, we would have to know their culture better. It would be best for native american Christians to reach their own than for us to try to wedge our way into their lives. I agree that they need help - don't get me wrong. They have been "wronged" by the white man so much they are very skeptical when some white person says, "Hi, I'm here to help you."

working with natives now in northwest canada, i find my experience rewarding. they are open to christianity - despite the fact that early christianity took away their culture through residential schools.

the approach of course is to contextualize. and we have tools that can do this. it is not the "swiss army" of contextualized gospel - but it is a start.

Monte Church has an awesome seminar on understanding the "native mindset." if i get enough interest i will put it up in Google video. it's a 4 DVD presentation.

Monte Church is working on the first set of the Native New Health series as well - it is kinda like the CHIP + NEWSTART - but contextualized for the natives of US and Canada.

we do have gathered alot of interests here too!

once it is released (with the printed study guides) we will introduced this to the native villages (8 reserves) around Terrace. we have talked to some of the native elders and health professionals and they are excited as well.

monte was here for the closing of our Native Prophesy Series and he mentioned the first release might be this fall - God willing.

Im native american and never heard of seventh day adventist or went to church. I didn't grow up on the reservation though but there is a lack of any kind of faith in many of our activities as a tribe, especially today. But I have met a native man from another tribe who tries to mix some of the old traditional native american ways with his Christianity. Like burning sage while praying and cleaning your self with it.

The Adventist Church is building a strong work in Canada with first nations. The amazing thing is, so many of the traditional aboriginal beliefs are similar to the raw Adventist teachings.

For example if you go to the 6 Nation logo, it has 7 feathers on it, one for each day of creation.

I will be at the Native Camp Meeting in Port Hardy BC one week today. It will be held at the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw SDA Church in Port Hardy British Columbia.

There is a book in the works of Sabbath keeping in tribes before the Europeans moved in.

Fascinating.

Sure will. I am at the Native Meetings next week. Will be bring this up. Some of the research on aboriginal prophesy is incredible. The histoy is more word of mouth as their story boards in British Columbia were totem poles. Which are interesting by themselves.
