The company I just quit working for had only been in the general contracting business for eight years. Every professional that had quit before me had left with plenty of "four-letter" words. I think I was the only one that gave a two-week notice and turned in a letter of resignation. Well, of course, they didn't know how to handle it so they fired me with their long list of "four-letter" word.

A week before I quit, I was asked by the boss if I was looking for another job and I told him "no". And he said that in the other employees had told him that and then left him high and dry. I responded by telling him I would not do that. I told him I don't burn bridges and that when I quit I would give him proper notice. Well, when I gave him notice (and he then fired me) he told me that I was burning a bridge. When I went to pick up my last paycheck, I was told not to list them in my employment history because they wouldn't give me a good reference - even though they were happy with my performance (yes they said that).

So moral of the story. Maybe I should have sent them a bridge-burning email. But that wouldn't have reflected well on my loving Saviour.

Well Doctor Neil,

It's like this. I'm the Boss and as such I am usually quite happy; and No I have been fortunate to not have received any letters like the above.

I was blessed to have a few good mentors that taught me early in my management career that treating people as equals and following the golden rule works. After almost 30 years over half of my 100+ employees are long-termer's of > 5-25 years . Most try to do a good job. When I do have to fire someone it is most often for irresponsible attendance (too many hot date sick calls etc). We stress that this is a family taking care of families and people generally pull together. As with any family there are squabbles and an occasional trip to the wood pile but by and large my section get along well and support each other. I am also fortunate to report to a great vice-president and president who have both been very supportive so I don't expect to leave prior to retirement and certainly not with that kind of exit!

When that day comes I have told the President that he should not bother giving me a gold watch - "Just give me 3 throws across the parking lot with my #!#!%!$! Pager !! "

Thanks for the rest Doc but you really should get a more comfortable couch. This one has lots of claw marks. (Is it really necessary to scare all your patients by wearing your fit-test mask to each of your first consultations ?)
