Churches fume over "no smoking signs

Senior clerics are fuming after they were told to post "no smoking" signs in churches and cathedrals by July 1.

The Dean of Southwark, the Very Rev Colin Slee, said: "It is such nonsense. One is bound to ask, when did you last hear of somebody smoking in church?"

Government regulations mean "no smoking" sings must be posted outside churches and cathedrals before the public smoking ban comes into effect in England.

The Bishop of Fulham, the Rt Rev John Broadhurst, said: "This is another example of the aggressive nanny state. The whole thing is stark staring mad."

A Department of Health spokesman said the Government was anxious to work with religious organisations to ensure their responsibilities under the law were clear.
