Adventist woman nominated as brigadier general

Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates announced that President George W. Bush has nominated Colonel Loree K. Sutton, a Seventh-day Adventist, for appointment to the grade of brigadier general.

Colonel Sutton is commander of Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Ft Hood, Texas. She assumed command of the center on July 7, 2005.

Originally from the Loma Linda, California, area, Colonel Sutton holds a medial degree from Loma Linda University and a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Pacific Union College.

She is a soldier and psychiatrist whose professional interests include soldier/family health readiness, operational medicine, trauma, stress, resilience, holistic fitness, addiction, leadership, medical governance, public policy, and international relations.

“Colonel Sutton has been a great partner and supporter of Metroplex Adventist Hospital in Killeen,” says Metroplex CEO Ken Finch. “With this nomination, she will be one of the highest ranking Seventh-day Adventist women to ever serve in the United States military.”

Colonel Sutton has received numerous awards including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Order of Military Merit and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. She has served in a variety of operational positions both in the states and overseas, including deployment to Operation Desert Storm.

Is this military rank always by presidential appointment?
