Some good reading on this would also be the book of Hosea. God told Hosea to take himself an adulterous wife, to illustrate the relationship between Himself and Israel

It is evident that God divorced Israel as his Covenant People.

Jesus' selection of 12-disciples was the formulation of a new Israel in whom the loving requirements of obedience would be met. This new Israel is made of of children who are united to Abraham by faith, both Gentile & Jewish alike.

I believe that the "formulation of a new Israel" occurred after the stoning of Steven, when the Jewish nation finally formally rejected the gospel.

I don't think it began with the selection of the twelve disciples.

Thanks Graeme. Simple question.. Why do you suppose Jesus chose twelve? Why not ten? Or seven?

The selection of twelve would pave the foundation of the New Jerusalem along with the twelve tribes. "The root supports you."

The stoning of Steven does indeed mark the termination of the 490-years probation alloted to National Israel. I agree.
