Humane Alternative to Declawing

I thought this was so neat, and think I am going to try it to keep my kittys from scratching my furniture. I never heard of these, and they come in a variety of different colors! Here's the website to look at the different colors: Click here

Humane Alternative to Declawing

Undesirable scratching is one of the prime reasons for surrendering cats to shelters, but there are less aggressive alternatives to declawing or abandonment. Soft Claws, developed by a veterinarian, ranks high on the list of humane alternatives.

Since Soft Claws has long been on my recommended list of alternatives to declawing, I welcomed the opportunity to review this innovative product. Soft Claws comes in a reclosable plastic container, which includes 40 nail caps (enough for several applications), two tubes of adhesive, and instructions for application. If your cat is used to having his nails trimmed, applying Soft Claws is a breeze.

Trim your cat's nail tips as usual

Fill the nail caps one-third full with adhesive

Slide the nail caps onto the nails, one by one.

Wait a minute or so to allow adhesive to set, then let your cat go.

Until you feel completely proficient with the process, you might want to just do one nail at a time for steps 2 and 3. If you or your cat are too timid, many veterinarians or retailers will handle the application for you, for a small fee, or even for free, if you purchase the Soft Claws from them.

Soft Claws come in Kitten, Small, Medium, and Large sizes, and in Natural, Purple, Pink, Blue, and Red colors, and are available online, in local pet stores, and from veterinarians. If you are seeking relief from destructive or painful scratching by a cat, I highly recommend Soft Claws.

Those look pretty cool (and pretty). We tend to simply cut our cat's nails so that they have blunt tips. Stops him clawing furniture (and people), without cruelty (he happily sits still for it) and without ill effects. Except that he'll occasionally try to run up the curtains or something and get a surprised look when he can't cling on.

Well, maybe I am not cutting my cat's nails short enough. How do you get them blunt at the ends?

We just use a set of ordinary nail clippers (for humans), albeit the bigger ones, and basically just cut across the claw, staying well clear of the pink bit where the nerve is. Here's an illustration:

It is a beautiful piece of art you made, Bravus. Is it a serigraph? or lithograph? :D

Bravus! Thanks so much for that pic! You did a great job and it's so clear at where to cut! My son and I just cut their nails this evening, and we did it just before the "quick" as it is called. Thanks again! :)

Hey Melia! Yes, I seen they had it for dogs too, but that was a great picture of one! I didn't see that picture. It really shows the colors on the feet good, and it's large enough to see.

How that's alot of toes to cover

Ananova:

Nine lives, 26 toes

The owner of a cat with 26 toes is trying to find out if her pet is a record breaker.

Most cats have just 18 toes, five on each front paw and four on each hind paw, Des has a total of 26, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Alison Thomas, of Felindre, near Swansea, said her pet has seven toes on each front paw and six on each back paw.

"We've had him for about 10 years, he just turned up on the doorstep and my husband made the fatal error of giving him a bowl of milk so he stayed," she said.

"He was only about six months old at the time and was quite small, so his paws looked enormous.

"I originally wondered if he needed them chopped off, but the vet said he was fine."

The world record holder for toes is an Ontario-based cat, Jake, whose 28 digits were officially recorded in 2002.

But Mrs Thomas is keen to discover whether Des is a Welsh or UK record holder.

I just read through this whole thread and I was......

Amazed at how interesting it was!

Amused at the idea of a suprised cat half way up a curtian,

Appauled by the blue nails. That could ruin a cat's street cred'
