Prominent developer, father of 7 wins award

LAWRENCEVILLE — Living in a house with a wife and seven daughters has taught local developer Emory Morsberger one of the keys to being a good father:

“I basically just give in pretty quickly because you don’t win when you’re up against six or eight women,” Morsberger said.

But former co-worker Richard Sheffield said Morsberger’s commitment to his family is deeper than just giving in. Because of that, Sheffield nominated Morsberger for the 2007 Father of the Year Award given by the Atlanta Father’s Day Council.

Morsberger was chosen as one of five recipients of the award and was honored at a benefit dinner for the American Diabetes Association on Thursday night.

“I’ve known Emory for 18 years and during that time he’s always put his family first,” Sheffield said.

Morsberger is CEO of the Morsberger Group, which has been instrumental in the revitalization of downtown Lawrenceville and is one of the leading proponents of the Brain Train proposal. But even with all his other activities, Morsberger has made his family the priority.

“When I was younger and he had his first company, he was a lot busier,” said Jennifer Morsberger, the oldest daughter in the family at 24. “But I think he realized he wanted to be with the family more and he cut back.”

Cutting back has allowed Morsberger to be there for moments such as helping Jennifer take the training wheels off her bike, which she said is one of her favorite memories.

“That was a big day for me and he wasn’t impatient at all,” she said.

Cutting back has allowed Morsberger to be able to coach his daughters in softball, which he won’t do this year for the first time since 1990.

And cutting back has allowed Morsberger a chance to understand how to live with a house full of women.

“I think it’s overwhelming at times because we’re all so different,” Jennifer said. “We’re all very different in our personalities and sometimes that’s hard, but I think he does a good job of realizing we are a little oversensitive at times.”

Sheffield, who has three children of his own, said he couldn’t imagine what it’d be like to have seven girls.

“Emory clearly has issues with phone bills, bathroom time and wedding planning,” he said.

What Morsberger said has made all his business and family success possible is his wife, Janet. He said his wife, who is an engineer with a Master’s of Business Administration, is able to keep the house running smoothly.

“She’s the one that really keeps the family front on track, and I try not to get in her way on that,” Morsberger said.

So, is that the key to being father of the year?

“Yes. If you’ve got an organized wife, stay out of her way,” Morsberger said.
