Stan Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 July 2007 Signs of the Times Email Newsletter The Signs of the Times newsletter is a collection of stories and quotes from past issues of Signs and These Times. *************************** During an earthquake that occurred a few years since, the inhabitants of a small village were generally very much alarmed, but they were at the same time surprised at the calmness and apparent joy of an old lady whom they all knew. At length one of them, addressing the old lady, said: “Mother, are you not afraid?” “No,” said the mother in Israel; “I rejoice to know that I have a God that can shake the world.”—Unknown, Signs of the Times, February 1, 1883. Quote: “Never retire at night without being wiser than when you rose in the morning, by having learned something useful during the day.”—Unknown, Signs of the Times, January 18, 1883. *************************** Don't miss the August 2007 issue of Signs of the Times. The citizens of Dayton called them “the crazy Wright brothers,” but they kept on with their experiments. The first contraptions they made did not fly, but they tried again and again. Samuel Morse was told by the United States Congress that they would just as soon give money to build a railway line to the moon as to vote funds for him to build an experimental line over which he expected to send messages. Morse had made some resolutions, and in 1844 he sent over the wires the message, “What Hath God Wrought!” Fulton resolved that he would propel a boat by steam, and he did. Columbus determined that he would find a shorter way to the Indies, that he would reach east by sailing west, and he discovered America. Ford resolved that he would make a horseless carriage, and he succeeded. Westinghouse made some resolutions or he would never have invented the air brake. The promoters of the first railroad made some resolutions, too, or the railway would not have gone through to the West. Carey was a man of faith and courage, and although the heads of the church tried to discourage the young man, he determined that he would carry the gospel to the ends of the entire earth. Many have resolved and broken their resolutions. Thousands have started and have fallen out by the way. But not many people have really gotten anywhere who did not set a goal for themselves and make a start toward that destination. Not many have done anything worth while without a determination to do.—By C. L. Paddock, Our Times, January 1949. Quote: “If we had paid no more attention to our plants than we have to our children, we would now be living in a jungle of weeds.”—By Luther Burbank, Our Times, September 1949. *************************** NEW from Pacific Press—“Could It Really Happen?” by Marvin Moore. Sunday laws, economic boycotts, death decrees, religious persecution . . . could it really happen in America? You’ll be fascinated as Marvin Moore explains the prophecies of Revelation 13 in the light of history and current events. In “Could It Really Happen?” Moore provides a depth and historical perspective to prophecy that is rare, and he gives the reader an insightful glimpse into the final events before Christ’s Second Coming. Thinking that its contents were of no value, they stored the chest away and forgot about it. There it stayed for many years, gathering dust as the days went by. In 1941 the men cleaned out the storage room. When they found the dusty old trunk, they examined its contents. They did not remember the name of the person from whom they had bought it. “What are these things?” asked one of the men, as he picked up some old metal disks lying among other articles in the bottom of the trunk. “They look like money!” replied the other as he scratched one of them. Then they hurried over to a government building to have the objects examined. An expert in the study of old money said that they were gold coins. Their actual value was $4,885, but they could be sold to a collector of rare coins for $6,000. People miss many of the good things of life because of neglect of precious treasures lying close at hand which could be of great benefit to them.—By Robert Leo Odom, Our Times, January 1950. Quote: “Where we are ignorant, God is wise; where we stand blindly in the dark, He is in the light; where we wonder, He calmly knows.”—By Phillips Brooks, Signs of the Times, September 17, 1902. *************************** Read articles from past issues of Signs of the Times at: http://www.SignsTimes.com *************************** Back in the days of the sailing vessels, Captain Dee from Liverpool commanded a ship sailing to New York. On one voyage his family went with him. During the night when all were asleep, a sudden squall arose and struck the vessel, instantly throwing her over on her side. Everything inside tumbled and crashed about. The passengers awoke in great fear and in imminent peril. Everyone on board was alarmed. Some sprang from their berths and began to dress so that they might be ready for the worst. Captain Dee had a little daughter on board, just eight years old. She, of course, awoke with the rest. “What is the matter?” the frightened child cried. They told her that a storm had struck the ship. “Is father on deck?” she asked. “Yes, father is on deck.” Then the little thing just dropped back on her pillow and, without a fear, in a few moments was sleeping soundly again in spite of wind and wave. Father was on deck. So, friend, never forget that our Father is on deck. Whatever the storm of life or the storms of this world may bring, God is in charge.—By H. M. S. Richards, These Times, January 1955. Quote: “The morning is the first part of the day, and it is fit that He that is first should have the first, and be first served. . . . Whatever you do, begin with God.”—By Matthew Henry, These Times, August 1964. *************************** Place this in your church bulletin or newsletter: This year, give your friends and loved ones a gift subscription to Signs of the Times. I thought I would have to be good for the next eleven years before God would forgive all my sins.” The father then showed his son that he must do good and be good the rest of his life, but pardon is a GIFT that we receive from God. Jesus would freely forgive him for his eleven years of sin.—By D. A. Delafield, Signs of the Times, September 1952. Quote: An infidel once said to an old lady that he could prove to her own eyes that the Bible was a lie. She replied, “I would believe the Bible before I would my own eyes.” “What do you mean by that?” said the infidel. She answered, “These old eyes of mine have failed me a thousand times, but the blessed old Book has not failed me at a single point.”—Unknown, Signs of the Times, August 18, 1900. *************************** Witnessing just got easier! Quote: “Some people pray and then sit down to wait for God to send an answer, ready-made, before they do anything. That is not the best way. Pray; then, without waiting, go to work, that you may be ready to meet the answer. When you pray for rain, hasten to get your rain-water barrel out, even tho no cloud is in sight. God controls the clouds. You control the barrel. Answers to prayer seldom come to idle men.”—Anonymous, Signs of the Times, November 20, 1907. *************************** Compiled by Dale Galusha. Beryl Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 I have been receiving these email newsletters for several years. There are some great stories in them -- and they are free!! Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.
