A first in Adventist magazine publishing

Friends,

I’d like to invite you to see the latest innovation from the Southwestern Union Record. The stories in our magazine have been available online in a database format for the last three years. You can go there and look up any story. But now, thanks to the hard work and brilliance of Record assistant editor and designer Reggie Johnson, we’ve created an online flip-book version that is just like holding the magazine in your hands.

This idea was one of the things that led me to make the change to a smaller print size because here the entire spread of two pages appears on the screen in full size, as readable as it is in print.

To see it yourself, go to our website Southwestern Union Record and click on the animated link on the left side. To open the flip-book magazine, click in the upper right corner or click and drag the page to the left. Or you can click on the arrows at the bottom right. You can click through the magazine one page at a time, or click on the page numbers on the right side to jump to that page. Inside on the table of contents page, you can click on any news section or feature listed there to go directly to that page. Clicking the magnifying glass icon will allow you to zoom in on any photo or text on a page. Inside the magazine, you can click on specific stories that offer more photos online to be taken to those photos on the Record website. You can click on a link in some conference news stories to be taken to those websites for more information on retreats or programs. The display ads have clickable links that offer to take the reader directly to the ministry, service, or institution being advertised.

A number of catalogs and journals are available online in this format, but the small trim-size of the Record makes it work smoothly without having to zoom or scroll to see the whole page. While it won’t be exactly right for every computer, it is optimized for the most common screen resolution sizes.

This is a first in Adventist magazine publishing. Look it over and let me know what you think. (For those of you in the Southwestern Union, our big promotion of this will come in the September issue next week.)

Very nice! I like it. That must have taken some work and formating to get your website so like the magazine. I can't imagine doing it but, my website creating knowledge is limited. :- )

Tres Cool! I love how the bottom corners of the mag flip up as you go to turn the page.

That's an exciting improvement. Thanks for posting. I have it bookmarked.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

That is awesome! The main use of that technology I've seen is in ad papers from tech stores... Now I need to point it out to my home conference -- at least the conference paper is formatted that size (Union is still the larger format, I think)!

Lotus Organizer has been doing something similar for 15-years. I like it.
