Amelia Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 Christian organization helps rebuild town following Katrina Associated Press September 2, 2007 PEARLINGTON, Miss. (AP) - Religious groups are bringing hope and new homes to many residents of Pearlington, Mississippi, still struggling two years after Hurricane Katrina. An Indiana-based Christian organization called the International Disaster Emergency Service has provided the money and volunteers to build 35 new houses in Pearlington. It's also helped revive the county volunteer fire department. The fire chief says FEMA made a lot of promises in the wake of the storm, but people got tired of waiting. They took what little insurance money they had, matched it with donations from other fire departments, church organizations and individuals, and rebuilt the station. One disaster relief volunteer from Michigan sold his business and joined the Pearlington rebuilding effort permanently. Ron Loomis says, "God touched me." Pearlington's population has dwindled to about 800 people since Katrina, about half its previous size.
