Bomb threat and SDA pastor

The news media today is reporting that an employe of the General Conference was arrested yesterday for making a bomb threat at the Nashville Airport. He is reported to be an SDA pastor.

In the latest on this subject, it is now stated that he is actually a pastor with the so-called Reform Seventh-day Adventist Chruch.

Bomb scare suspect's affiliation clarified

A Florida man who was charged with falsely claiming to be carrying a bomb in Nashville International Airport is a member of a small denomination that split with the Seventh-day Adventists nearly a century ago.

Jose Senior Gonzalez, of Deltona, Fla., was arrested Sunday after declaring at a security checkpoint that he had a bomb, then reaching into his carry-on bag and withdrawing a Bible, according to federal charges. Startled Transportation Security Agency officials and airport police took him into custody and summoned the FBI.

Later, according to a federal complaint, Gonzalez ''claimed he had used the term 'bomb' as a way of referring to the Bible as having the ability to change one's life.''

Tuesday, during an initial appearance in Nashville federal court, a prosecutor, a defense attorney and a pretrial services officer agreed that the man posed little threat and cited his church work as requiring him to travel sometimes, even though he would be restricted by the terms of his bond pending trial.

Knowles released him on an unsecured $10,000 bond and has allowed him travel as long as he clears any plans with probation officers first.

Yesterday, officials at the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement confirmed that Gonzalez is a member of its church, not the Seventh-day Adventists, as described in open court.

The Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement split from the larger church during a doctrinal dispute in the midst of World War I and has about 35,000 members, compared with the 13.6 million baptized members of the Seventh-day Adventists.

According to Kumar Suresh, president of the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement in Roanoke, Va., Gonzalez was traveling on behalf of that church when he was detained at the Nashville airport.

How many times has this happened? A person connected to a group which has broken away from our church creates enough legal issues to become news is then reported to be a Seventh Day Adventist?

It takes a lot of good PR to undo what a little bit of negative spin can do.

I can see people in our church using this metaphor...What is bothering me is that you can not say certain words in certian places without creating an uproar....I know that you cannot shout out "fire" in a theater, but I have a truely hard time with someone using the word "bomb" in a converstation and then drawing out a bible....The Patriaot Act is making us paranoid....
