Dr. Shane Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Thompson: I can stop Hillary Clinton "I still have the same common-sense conservative beliefs," Thompson said in Iowa, citing his belief in the "sanctity of life, lower taxes, less regulation, market economy, free competition, respect for private property rights, free and fair trade." "If we stick with that, be successful and continue to be prosperous in this country," Americans will vote for the Republican ticket, he said. ...Thompson, 65, who has had a multifaceted career as a prosecutor, lobbyist, actor and U.S. senator from Tennessee, is angling for a conservative base that has yet to coalesce around a favorite. ...Even before he became a candidate, Thompson showed well in recent national poll averages, trailing only the front-runner, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. His acting role on NBC's popular "Law and Order" TV shows has buoyed his name recognition and prompted comparisons to another actor-turned-president beloved by conservatives, Ronald Reagan. ... Thompson's government service goes back to 1969, when he became a federal prosecutor in Nashville. His profile went national in 1973, when he was appointed as the Republican counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee investigating misdeeds by President Richard Nixon and members of his staff. During televised hearings that riveted the nation, Thompson famously and dramatically asked White House aide Alexander Butterfield about the existence of tapes made of Oval Office conversations, which would eventually turn out to be Nixon's undoing. After Watergate, Thompson returned to Tennessee to practice law. He fell into a career as an actor when he was asked to play himself in the 1985 movie "Marie," which was based on a real-life case in which he represented a whistleblower who exposed corruption. His performance in the film led to other film and TV roles. In 1994, Thompson sought political office for the first time, running for the remaining two years of the Senate term that Democrat Al Gore gave up when he was elected vice president in 1992. After barnstorming the Volunteer State in a red pickup truck while wearing cowboy boots, Thompson won in a landslide and, in 1996, easily won re-election to a full six-year term. In 2002, however, Thompson decided not to seek re-election and left the Senate. He worked as a lawyer-lobbyist in Washington and also took on the role of the gruff, conservative New York District Attorney Arthur Branch on "Law and Order." advertisement Thompson left the show earlier this year when he began considering a presidential bid. In April, Thompson disclosed that in 2004, he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. However, he said the cancer was in remission and he was suffering no symptoms. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Neil D Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Oh my goodness! The republican machine thinks that Hillary is the only threat that can stop thier retaking the white house... Apparently, Obama, nor Edwards, nor Kusenich [sp] are real threats.... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Moderators lazarus Posted September 9, 2007 Moderators Posted September 9, 2007 Kusenich [sp] ?????? he plays the role of the conscience of the party well but he's not a thread to GOP. I thinks he's more of threat to uniy in the democratic part tat anything else Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted September 9, 2007 Moderators Posted September 9, 2007 Check out Thompson's record in the Senate. He did absolutely nothing there. I don't think he's a real "threat" to anybody on either party; but in case one is interested, there was a good background article on his early years in the LATimes on 9/6/07. With the encouragement of his first wife's family, he rose quickly from a high school football player with no other ambition, and who became a father at 17, to graduating from college, from law school, and to becoming a local politician by age 30. After his divorce and remarriage, and having a "second family" with his second wife, his first wife went on the campaign trail and spoke on his behalf when he ran for the U.S.Senate. Dr. Shane Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 I wouldn't expect anything nice to be said about Thompson by the LA Times. Time will tell how things play out. Thompson does add some spice to the race on the Republican side. He is charismatic much like Reagan was. Hilary seems to bring that to the Democrat side. A race between the two would most likely be the most interesting. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted September 11, 2007 Moderators Posted September 11, 2007 I wouldn't expect anything nice to be said about Thompson by the LA Times. Come again?? I don't recall quoting anything from the LAT article which wasn't "nice." Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Dr. Shane Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 I didn't mean to imply something was quoted. I only meant what I posted, that I wouldn't expect the LA Times to publish anything nice about him. But they could always surprise me. I understand they have been making some changes over the past year. The NY Times,LA Times, Boston Globe and Washington Post are among the most liberal newspapers in the country. That is not a bad thing, just something to keep in mind when reading them. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Neil D Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 first! It's called a preemptive strike! So that anything you might quote from is labeled 'liberal' and there fore to be considered 'suspect'. Ho, hum....and the beat goes on....no change...samo-samo! Dr. Shane Posted September 12, 2007 Author Posted September 12, 2007 The heat is on... Rival charges Hillary Clinton turned blind eye to Hsu's past Hillary Clinton's links to illegal fundraising by Asian-Americans in 1996 should have made her wary of accepting $850,000 from a fugitive Asian-American this year, a rival presidential campaign said Tuesday. The criticism came from an adviser to former Republican Sen. Fred Thompson, who chaired a Senate investigation into illegal contributions by Asian-Americans to Bill Clinton's re-election campaign and the couple's legal defense fund in the 1996 election cycle. Thompson adviser Rich Galen said Clinton's 2008 campaign has become "the sequel" to her husband's scandal-plagued 1996 campaign. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... jasd Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 QR frame: Re: the line-up of Democrat hopefuls... Kucinich!? have mercy... "I feel the United States is engaging in an illegal occupation ... I don't want to bless that occupation with my presence," Kucinich said in Lebanon, according to the Associated Press. "I will not do it." ...elucidating upon the reason he declined to visit our boys and girls serving ‘next door’ in Iraq. Apparently, it slipped his mind that Syria’s Assad illegally occupied Lebanon for several decades and, according to its present PM Siniora, is the person of interest responsible for the assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri; moreover, Siniora states further that Syria is complicit in the ongoing attempt to destabilize Lebanon – that it might subjugate it. Oh well, typical Demo hopeful? Is 17:1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from [being] a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. Prophesied is the utter annihilation of Damascus (sounds tah me like it’s nuked): perhaps, it will, at the same time, eliminate Kucinich’s sedition. Dr. Shane Posted September 16, 2007 Author Posted September 16, 2007 Quote: Then, of course, you believe that we should reinstate the "Fairness Doctrine"................ If the Fairness Doctrine would be applied to TV, Internet, Newspapers and Magazines as well as radio, we might have something to discuss. The idea of only censoring radio doesn't sound very fair at all. The idea of the Fairness Doctrine was to provide both sides with a voice. Today, with all the different forms of media from satellite radio and TV to Internet blogs and small town newspapers there really isn't a need for minority views to have government mandate certain types of media to give them a voice. What is needed is for us, the consumers, to balance out our sources of news. Even if the Fairness Doctrine was enacted and did apply to all forms of media, that wouldn't stop conservatives from tuning out liberal programs and vise-a-versa. As far as the topic at hand is concerned, I doubt either candidate will need the Fairness Doctrine to get their message out. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
