aldona Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 When my husband & I spent some time in the US earlier this year, we were amazed at just how many foods, drinks and medicines have caffeine added, and how much. Your "No Doz" tablets have twice the caffeine of ours, we only have "Red Bull" type drinks available in the smallest size, and you will not find any painkillers or cold/flu remedies at the pharmacy with caffeine. (Except for Cafergot, used for migraines, and only available on prescription.) And your coffee is much stronger, and served in larger cups. We came to the conclusion that this is a whole nation in a permanent state of caffeine addiction. I like the occasional espresso or latte myself, especially when I have to work a long shift, but I just could not keep up. When we flew back into Sydney and we were waiting in the transit lounge for our flight to Melbourne, we looked around and commented on how "slowed down" Aussies looked after interacting with Americans for 3 weeks. It was quite funny - everyone seemed to be half asleep or on Valium. Now it seems normal again not to be bouncing off the walls. must go, I can smell my coffee plunger doing its thing... aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? Moderators Denise Posted September 27, 2007 Moderators Posted September 27, 2007 Interesting Aldona......didn't know you guys were slower paced than us.....and that's a good thing! I know in some parts of the US, some parts are slower, for example....I use to live in Connecticut, that's where I am from....and they are real fast paced there.....and I am in Georgia now.....much slower paced, and I love it! Also, religion is freely discussed in GA, but in CT, when you discuss too much about God, they think your crazy...I was told by a lady when I talked about God, "shhhh, you shouldn't talk about God that much." Here in GA, almost everyone talks about God freely and no one thinks your crazy...lol They call it the bible belt down here. Dr. Shane Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 At the local convienance store they have by the little creamer cups in the coffee area they have caffiene "cups" (the little ones that hold about a tablespoon) with a warning not to drink more than a couple of them in a day. America is a past-paced, very industrial country. Caffeine seems to fit in all that. We need to learn to slow down and enjoy life - which is one of the reasons the Lord gave us the Sabbath. Amelia Posted September 28, 2007 Author Posted September 28, 2007 Shane, yep some places offer them for free as an aditive to regular coffee, others charge .25 cents per shot. Stok also has a caffenated creamer If you look you will also see all kinds of pills and pkts, vials and tubes of caffenated potions. All neatly packaged to appeal to our youth. Like the one that looks like a stick of dynomite and called C4 Explosive. Comes with a warning not to carry on airplanes and not recommended for minors. But guess what? That warning is ignored. Oh then there is the gum, mints and truffles. Yes, chocolate covered caffeine! I always get riled when I see that stuff. And don't get me started on all the little markets owned by Sikhs, Pakistanies and Indians who have sections for bongs, pipes, papers, brillo and High Times magizine. All of which is freely accessible to the youth and they DON'T restrict selling to them either. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>
Beryl Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Quote: America is a past-paced, very industrial country. Caffeine seems to fit in all that. Very interesting! And, according to what I hear, Americans have a problem with overeating and obesity! Last year at the Western Australia Health Retreat we had Dr Ross Grant from the Australian Research Institute (SDA) as one of our speakers, and he was speaking about his latest research on caffeine and the brain. What caffeine does to the brain is shocking! However, one of the sections of one of his presentations really stuck in my brain. Now, I can't give to you all the scientific names that he used (unless I looked up the DVD), so I will put it in terms that are readily understood. When dealing with the question of the effect of caffeine on obesity he described how our stomachs have 3 receptors on the left side and 4 receptors on the right side. The receptors on the left side signal the brain when the stomach feels the need of food, and, when satisfied, the right side signals the brain to "stop eating, I am full". Wonderful -- no overeating except when we deliberately over-indulge! However this is where caffeine come in. Caffeine knocks out 3 of the 4 receptors on the right side -- so the signal to the brain that we are full is such a weak signal that we go on eating because we still feel the need for food! This results in obesity! With so many drinks, and chocolate, and now SUNFLOWER SEEDS having caffeine in -- is it any wonder that we are having a problem with obesity -- even among our school children? At the moment I am busy keeping up with orders for that DVD! God bless, Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.

Moderators Denise Posted September 28, 2007 Moderators Posted September 28, 2007 WOW!! Umph, Chapstick, and Buzzwater, and whatever else! Never knew caffeine was added in so many things! And now I see why so many Americans are overweight, caffeine addiction, and as Beryl said, which I didn't know, caffeine causes obesity! WOW!! It seems the adversary is busy messing with people with the caffeine trying to drown out any impressions from the Holy Spirit. Beryl Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Quote: It seems the adversary is busy messing with people with the caffeine trying to drown out any impressions from the Holy Spirit. Yes, I believe that is quite true. I recently attended a drug conference, which was hosted by a combination of a Christian based anti-drug party, and another church. The time came for about the third "break" in the proceedings. Each had been announced as a "coffee break". Someone had noticed that I always took a glass of water rather than a cup of coffee, and had questioned me about it -- so I explained quietly why I chose not to drink coffee. I smiled to myself when it came time for this next break -- the MC said, "OK, it is time for our next coff-- er --- "drug break"! A number of them saw the irony of us spending a whole day in the discussion of what we could do about the drug situation -- when 99.9% of them were hooked on caffeine! Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." Beryl Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Quote: It seems the adversary is busy messing with people with the caffeine trying to drown out any impressions from the Holy Spirit. Just another thought on this. Yes, I firmly believe that is just so true. Anything that the devil can do to make it harder to listen to the voice of God -- he will do! The frontal lobe of the brain is the place where all of our decisions are made. It is here that both the Holy Spirit and the devil try to reach us. It is the only place. That is why the devil has been very busy coming up with all kinds of things that decrease our ability to make wise decisions -- alcohol, tobacco, drugs, caffeine -- they are all part of his arsenal when it comes to the battle for my soul. It is not only the fight with obesity that is affected by caffeine. As our speaker pointed out in another lecture, caffeine actually alters the way that the brain receives messages, which means that it affects our decisions in all things. And it is not only caffeine. Here is a little bit of information for you to ponder! When dealing with persons endeavouring to quit smothing, I always write four names on the board for their contemplation. NicotINE CaffeINE AmphetamINE PurINE Related drugs that affect a person's ability to make decisions. Where do we get them from? Well, I think you all know where nicotine, caffeine, amphetamines come from, but purine? Let me write it this way -- p/urine. That's right, it is the urine that is still on its way for elimination in the animal that is killed for meat. The majority would be eliminated if people followed the Biblical command that they were not to eat the blood. Just a thought!! Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.
