My favorite is the New American Standard Bible.

Has anyone read from the New Living Translation? I noticed this translation on the Bible Gateway web site. I seem to like it almost as well as the New King James which is my prefered version. I'm not aware of possible flaws however.

I need a wide margin Bible that I can write notes in.

There's a really good New King James Version wide margin Bible. It has wide margins for notes on both sides of the columns, as well as good maps and introductions. It's called "The Legacy Study Bible," with Hank Hanegraaff as the General Editor, and it is published by Nelson Bibles. www.nelsonbibles.com

Here's the link to the Legacy Bible: http://www.thomasnelson.com/consumer/product_detail.asp?dept_id=191900&sku=0718018044

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Yes, I use this as well as many other translations quite a lot. The New Living Translation is fine for understanding context and general themes, but when it comes to a closer study of particular words, it is best to use the New American Standard Bible or the Revised Standard Version or other more literal translations.

The New Living Translation has fewer flaws than the original Living Bible, but it also does have flaws. In fact, every translation, including the very best, contains flaws. Some have more flaws, and more serious ones, than others. That is why it is best to compare at least four different translations: two literal, [The King James, the New King James, the New American Standard, the Revised Standard] one dynamic [the New International Version], and one paraphrase, [The New Living Translation or the Clear Word Translation].

Here is one flaw in the New Living Translation: Mark 7: 19, last part, "By saying this, he showed that every kind of food is acceptable."

There is not a single ancient Greek manuscript containing any of those words. The King James and the New King James will give you the literal reading of that text. Verse 19 reads, literally, "Because it enters not into his heart, but into his stomach, and is passed into the toilet-bowel-- purging all foods." (See also Rotherham's Emphasized or Robert Young's Literal Translation.)

You will find that most of the modern translations have this same flaw at Mark 7: 19. However, check it against the interlinear Greek/English texts and you will see that there is no Greek manuscript evidence for such a reading.

A second flaw: Hebrew 9: 12 should read "the holy place"(KJV; RSV; NASB) [Greek: ta hagia], instead of "the Most Holy Place" (NIV; NLT) [Greek: hagia hagion].

Bought the One Year Version for worship time. We like the way it reads very much.

I have a very old Oxford KJV that I like. I like the way the earlier English makes me read it slower, so that I don't skim as I read. Also, I like the helps: maps, concordance (more thorough than newer versions), subject index, and especially, the dictionary of scripture proper names.

I asked for a new one this year for my birthday, but they no longer print one with those helps in it. I got a very much larger one with a very wide margin for note-making. Now all I have to do is transfer my notes into the new Bible!

New Living Translation is my favorite, thats the version I preach from.

I used to spend alot of money on my "main" Bible. Had a calf skin, brown leather, Thomson chain reference KJV Bible but it was stolen when I left it at my church some years ago. I say stolen because it had my name engraved on the front, my name, address and telephone number inside.

I guess cos I use my laptop for study. I don't really have a main Bible anymore. I just use whatever I have in the car when I visit etc.

Anyone use one of those electronic Bibles?

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

I use the internet...usually Crosswalks Bible Study tools. I have the Strongs, as many different translations and versions as I could want and the search engine so that I can easily search any topic or word that is looming important in the moment! I open the web site alongside my Word Document and copy and paste texts and definitions and original Greek words to my hearts content and finally type in my own observations, prayers, and questions.

It would be nice if there was a site that included the SDA commentary and the EGWhite comments on each text too. Maybe there is but I just haven't discovered it yet!

Not sure if there is that but there are Bibles that have EGW notes with them

Hi, Gorgeous Gail!

I was just telling my Dad about your Bible Features poll. He asked me to tell you that he has an Oxford Bible that is a loose leaf Bible! It has note pages that can be inserted anywhere within the Bible. cool1

We used to sell those but had to return them as we found they had a defect- although I can't remember what the defect was. It's been several years since we've had a request for one

It's a great idea, though!
