Neil D Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Cops cleared in 'don't tase me bro' case at Fla. university The University of Florida has reinstated two police officers who were suspended while state officials investigated their decision to use a stun gun on a student who interrupted a speech by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement concluded that the officers acted properly when they used a Taser on Andrew Meyer, the undergraduate who became internationally known thanks to video footage that shows him scuffling with police and screaming as they use a stun gun on him inside the auditorium. An executive summary of the state's investigative report says Meyer was "much calmer" while the officers were driving him to jail. Meyer, who didn't know he was being recorded in the car, was heard telling the officers "they did not do anything wrong," the report says. While Meyer was incarcerated, state investigators say the jail recorded two phone calls in which Meyer "appears to sound elated that the arrest has occurred and at one point states that he is happy this has happened." They spent a lot of time talking about all the "media exposure the incident has generated," the investigators say. Attorney Robert Griscti denies allegations that his client staged the incident. "I think the suggestion is that he is looking for publicity when in fact everything that has happened is just the reverse," he tells The Miami Herald. On Deadline has renewed its request with the University of Florida for copies of the video footage and photographs associated with this investigation. We plan to request a copies of other documents associated with this investigation and will add them to this posting when they become available. Unless I google this incident, this is a good example of poor reporting...What did this student do to get arrested? Interrupt a speach? What was said? What was Kerry saying? Kerry is a democrate, and if this student was voicing republican ideas, this poor reporting could reflect on the mood of the public....or it could just be a staged event, per the report...Disrupting a democrate speech...which again reflects upon the conservative nature of newspapeer reporting...Nevertheless which side of the fence you lend your ear to...this is just plain poor incomplete reporting.. bad reporter, bad editor, bad publicist Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. Dr. Shane Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Reporting is about selling papers and getting ratings. Let's not forget that. Yes, reporters and editors all have political biases and some have agendas but that all takes back seat to profits. These people normally report the news in a way they think will make them the most money. Most people that interrupt political speeches are extremists. They are not even always politically motivated. Some are religiously motivated. Some are just trying to get attention. I do find it kind of odd it wasn't reported what his motivations were and that does seem like a bit of sloppy reporting.
