Moderators Bravus Posted November 1, 2007 Moderators Posted November 1, 2007 Major new study has been released recently with the above results. Bit more vindication for the SDA diet, I'd suggest. Quote Truth is important

JeriAnne Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Makes sense but doesn't ALWAYS work! I have Known too many with "Reformed Diets" die of cancer and Heart disease! I LIKE eating the way mentioned here but I do believe if you are going to get some disease you will probably get it whatever you do! This kind of stuff just increases the sick or dying persons guilt and shame! And leaves the rest with Bragging rights! I'd rather eat a piece of bacon any day than do that! Quote
Stan Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I think the most important is to have a god variety of foods, most of them close to their natural state (I am not saying raw) have different coloured food on a plate, use natural proteins like beans, nuts etc cooked in a healthy yet appetizing way. The "Mother Ship" in Maryland is coming out with a strong program to make sure each member walks 20,000 steps a day, or maybe it is 10,000. A prime preventer in many diseases. Dr. Shane Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Quote: The Australian meat industry has taken exception to the findings, saying the scientists have simply got it wrong. And in a completely unrelated story, oil companies say global warming is a lie. LOL Quote: I do believe if you are going to get some disease you will probably get it whatever you do! I think most people believe that which is why they don't change. When I stand in line at the supermarket I often notice what others are buying (as any good, self-righteous, judgmental, Adventist would) Frequently I notice those that are obese are buying lots of sugary soda pop, high-fat snacks like potato chips, lots of refined foods and fatty dairy products and meat. I think there might be a connection between what they eat and what they weigh. I would like the mothership in Maryland to come out with a weight-loss plan churches could use as an outreach tool - much like our stop smoking program. Of course a weight-loss program would have to be longer - like ten weeks. The meetings would, of course, be less frequent - like twice a week. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Dr. Shane Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Just so I am not misunderstood... Diet is something very hard to change and we need to be sympathetic with those that struggle with weight problems and poor diet. Most of the times people eat what they grew up eating and diet is often tied to emotional issues. Changing one's diet is not as easy as changing one's wardrobe. It is almost like dealing with addictive and compulsive behaviors. So while I notice what others are buying at the supermarket, I am sympathetic to the issues they must deal with. JeriAnne Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 No one preached longer or lived a more healthy life than my mom and she cheerfully change all of our diets to match what she knew from the Spirit of Prophecy! Our family ate out of a large garden which pretty much controlled our lives from Spring till it was harvested and put up in jars or the freezer. We only ate healthy homemade breads and all food as close to the way it grew as possible. To this day I can eat raw green beans and sugar snap peas cause I often ate them that way as a kid. We seldom used sugar and learned to love all fruits without it and picked fresh from the trees on my dad's fruit farm! Mom died of Bone Cancer at 69. Dad has had two heart attacks and Bypass surgery! I have diabetes and before my diagnosis was active, running 3-8 miles and day and had a close to appropriate weight! Since becoming a diabetic my weight has increased with every medication that is perscribed. My blood sugars soar the highest when I eat a Vegan diet. I still try to be active but it is much harder now. Perhaps the abuses we suffer outweigh ALL the health reform we can put into place!!! I don't know! But I really get angry when some self righteous person starts to preach this stuff! I love healthy food! I have just about decided it doesn't much like me!!! Quote
Dr. Shane Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 There are many that have such a strong genetic predisposition to get a disease that there is nothing they can do to avoid it. However, even in those cases, they may delay it by good diet and lifestyle. The mother that died at age 69 of cancer may well have died at age 49 of cancer had she not ate well and led an active lifestyle. Study after study conclude that diet and lifestyle have as much to do, and sometimes more, with the illness that we get than does genetics. Now there is the issue of fats. I think many Adventist vegetarians eat too much fat. Until recently, we did not know the danger of transfat and many of the heart problems we have had have been related to transfat. Adventists also tend to eat too much sugar and refined carbohydrates. These too add to weight gain. Personally, I try not to judge others on issues of diet. I know it is a struggle and often an emotional one. I am not a vegan and have not been "sold" on it as of yet. We do avoid fatty dairy products. We consume much more soy milk than cow's milk. But we also eat fish on a regular basis (2 to 3 times a week). Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Amelia Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Have you noticed the amt of sodium in Adventist foods? Woody Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Quote: And in a completely unrelated story, oil companies say global warming is a lie. I recently fought global warming if it exists. I had a heat pump installed at my ranch. Unknown to me ... the installer did not complete the attachment from the air conditioner to the air ducks under the house. There was a large gap. For years ... I was pumping cold air into the atmosphere. I wondered why my electric bill was so high !! Stupid me ... it took me four years to finally hire a different company to service it. Oh well .... I did my part for global warming and the health of us all. Maybe there will not be as much cancer because of me. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won.
