Stan Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Pastor Speaks About His Church Getting Robbed at Gunpoint Pastor David Smith. GARDEN CITY, GA--Church leaders, held up at gunpoint while doing church business. It happened Sunday around noon at the First Garden City Adventist 7th Day Church on Second Street. Most consider church one of the safest places to be. "I heard of it happening before, but I never thought it would happen where I was pastoring at," said pastor David Smith. But around noon Sunday, that all changed. As 12 church officials held a meeting, robbers struck. "One of my officers got up because he heard something and went towards the door. Then he shouted and fell back towards the floor and I was at the podium and started to move towards him because I thought something was wrong," said Smith. Something was wrong, they were being robbed. "At that point the two gunmen burst through the doors both armed with rifles or shotguns. One stayed at the door and the other demanded that we get on the ground and place our valuables on the ground," Smith explained. Smith says the robbers grabbed what they could and took off. The whole thing lasted only a few minutes, but left a lasting impression on the pastor. "It's really sad that people don't have respect for the House of God. That they would come into this holy place and do something like that," said Smith. Garden City police chief David Lyons says during the time he's been affiliated with the department, he's never heard of a church being robbed. "If you can't be safe inside of church on Sunday morning than what is safe," said Chief Lyons. Pastor Smith says his church will get over this and move forward. "We will continue to hold our services here and spread the word of Jesus Christ," said Smith. Police say they now have one of the suspects in custody, but the second suspect is still on the loose. None of the stolen goods have been recovered yet. Pastor Smith says they will resume their weekly and weekend services.
