Voted in the Australian federal election last week, and was delighted with the outcome.

But something I noticed in filling in the preferential ballot paper was that I put all of the avowedly 'Christian' political parties right at the low end of my preferences. This is because they are either obsessed with sexuality and proscribing it, or overtly racist (or linked to other racist parties like One Nation). Despite being a believing Christian, these parties' values are in many ways diametrically opposed to my own.

As it happens the new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, is also a believing Christian, and the first thing he did after being elected on Saturday night was go to church on Sunday morning. But the Labor Party is not an avowedly Christian party - it's just a party that values people.

I dunno - just tell me I'm not a real Christian if you like. But it might be more interesting to chat about the role of politics in religion as a whole, and whether there are Christian politicians with values we share.

Links to one of the minor 'Christian' parties in Australia:

Christian Democratic Party

(check out the call for a moratorium on Muslim immigration)

Oh I agree Bravus. Same thing happens here. It makes me wonder if the only reason the person got into politics was to further their own obsessive religious agenda? Egads, shades of the 3rd reich.

This is scary:

CDP is actively working to put pressure on the Federal Government to review our Commonwealth Immigration Policy - to ensure the priority for Christians from all races and colours, especially from persecuted nations, as both immigrants and refugees.

I wonder; do you think they would like this for Heaven too?
